WIPE - Part 1 (A Post-Apocalyptic Story)

Joseph A. Turkot - 2014
Way out in the sea, impossible to reach. It rises gray and bare, up and up, and then out of sight. As if the sea gave birth to something meant to connect it to the sky. I’ve never seen the top. Maze says she’s not convinced it has one. And I’ve always taken its impossible presence for what the Fathers say it is: a relic from before the Wipe. The hubris of pre-Wipe man, and a reminder for us all as to why it is God’s Will that we never return to technology. But Maze suddenly has it in her head that the tower means something else, something different than the history the Fathers have given us. I think she’s a conspiracy theorist. Until she shows me the map. Just the word mirror scribbled in red ink, next to a marking, and she expects me to go into the Deadlands with her. As long as I’ve known of her recklessness, and as much of a bad influence as she is on me, I can’t say no. Because while she doesn’t know they exist, I can’t stop my feelings for her. And I start to realize, when we first pass over the rotting gates, into the ruin that was a city, that it will take something much more than either of us ever knew we had in order to survive the truth.

Earthquake

Ira Tabankin - 2019
The names in the updated story have been changed and it has been reedited. A beautiful Memorial Day weekend is shattered by the New Madrid Fault erupting. The massive eruption which exceeded the country's previous record of a 9.0 changed the landscape of the Midwest. The earthquake sent shock waves through the ground, these shock waves set off other faults resulting in the largest disaster to ever strike the country. The New Madrid Fault caused a new grand canyon where the Mississippi River flowed, the quake ruptured other faults which cared a large capital letter "C" from where the Mississippi River was, north to the ruins of Chicago and east to New York City. The West was dealing with their own quakes as the faults along the west coast erupted, the eruptions in America's faults was quickly followed by the "Ring of Fire" that runs from Australia north through SE Asia and across the Pacific to Alaska before moving south along America's West Coast. The newly elected American President died when a giant wave rushed up the Potomac  River, the new VP had been in the UK, he flew home where he decided to focus the rebuilding on the western half of the country, the more progressive side. He decided to leave the SE to die or become so needy they would quickly give up their guns and Bibles for his assistance. He guessed wrong, the SE rose to challenge the West. Earthquake, a story of what could be.
