Kathryn Le Veque - 2018
With her trusty French Bulldog, Stanley, by her side, Kiki buys on old fixer-upper and has big dreams of turning the home into a bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, the old home, known as Agua de la Vida, is more work than she anticipated. When a sexy contractor gives her an estimate to restore the place, Kiki is in a quandary - she is attracted to the blond, blue-eyed hunk, but repelled by the money he estimates a restoration of the house will eat up. What's a girl to do? Trace Rocklin is that sexy contractor. Or, at least, that's what he pretends he is. The truth is that Trace was a CIA assassin, now returning to his home town to try and forget that part of his life by going to work in the family construction business. But trouble follows him, even as he falls for the owner of a derelict old house. Soon, Kiki is in danger and Trace is drawn back into the world of intrigue he's trying so hard to forget. In order to save Kiki, and himself, he must temporarily return to that job he's trying to forget - he must become that assassin again. It's flirty fun with a hint of terror in Pasadena, California as Kiki and Trace fall in love, and Trace must reconcile the deadly part of his past once and for all. Branding Terror: The Logotypes and Iconography of Insurgent Groups and Terrorist Organizations

Artur Beifuss - 2013
The branding they employ may contain complex systems of meaning and emotion; it conveys the group's beliefs and capabilities. Branding Terror is the first comprehensive survey of the visual identity of the world’s major terrorist organizations, from al-Qaeda and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine to the Tamil Tigers. Each of the 60-plus entries contains a concise description of the group’s ideology, leadership, and modus operandi, and a brief timeline of events. The group’s branding — the symbolism, colors, and typography of its logo and flag — is then analyzed in detail. Branding Terror does not seek to make any political statements; rather, it offers insight into an understudied area of counter-intelligence, and provides an original and provocative source of inspiration for graphic designers.

Professor Mmaa's Lecture

Stefan Themerson - 1953
I cannot promise the reader that at any point he will shake his sides with laughter, but I can promise him a wry pleasure to be derived from the skilful dissection of folly.” Bertrand Russell Professor Mmaa’s Lecture, given to a packed auditorium, deals with the habits, mentality and culture of Homo sapiens. But both the professor and his entire audience are termites; the whole story is set inside a termite mound.Naturally, Themerson’s attempt to comprehend humankind by examining how they would have been understood by insects is very funny. Termites have no sight, just a sense of smell, and can only explain their surroundings and lives through their insects’ angle on the world. The closing scene of the novel reveals what the termites have been researching and what has happened to their mound, giving the whole story an ironic twist. But this novel has much more to offer. Themerson’s heightened expertise and instinct for parodying the language and methods of scholarship, and the morals and manners of the academic world, produces a merciless and comical survey of philosophical views and attitudes. He pillories religion, language, reason and scholarship, as insect thinkers with suspiciously familiar names scuttle through the pages of the novel. A great many cases of dogmatic thinking and narrow-mindedness are exposed to ridicule. The only path that seems to earn the author’s approval is pluralism of ideas. You can see just why Bertrand Russell calls this novel a useful gospel for sceptics.Professor Mmaa’s Lecture is in the tradition of philosophical satire, whose most famous proponents are Voltaire and Swift, and is a rare incidence of light yet deep prose that can be read with great pleasure on several levels.
