Daily Soup Cookbook
Leslie Kaul - 1999
Now Leslie Kaul, the stores' executive chef, along with the owners, offer The Daily Soup Cookbook, a collection of 200 favorite recipes for soups, stews, and stocks. These straightforward formulas, drawn from a globe-spanning repertoire, will please cooks of all kinds, from beginners to the accomplished.Organized by ingredients such as vegetables, beans, grains, and fruit, the recipes include old favorites like French Onion and Chicken Matzoh Ball soups, as well as less familiar brews such as Jamaican Pumpkin soup, Shrimp and Scallop Seviche, and Poblano Corn Chowder. In addition to a chapter devoted to chilis--Braised Pork Chili with Black Beans and Corn is a particular winner--the authors provide notes on ingredients and techniques, historical asides, and a series of tongue-in-cheek sidebars, offering, for example, the Periodic Table of Soups and Baby Names for the New Millennium ("Art E. Choke" is one).If these digressions aren't always apt, there are always the soups, with several pièce de résistance examples--Peking Duck; Lamb, Artichoke, and Rosemary Stew; and Saffron Mussel soup--guaranteed to please. A final section on stocks provides basic soup building-block information, and Things to Do with Leftover Soups offers next-day options, should any of the delicious bowls not be devoured instantly. --Arthur Boehm

Journey to Health: A Journey Worth Taking: Cooking Keto with Kristie (Kindle edition)
Kristie Sullivan - 2017
After a lifetime of obesity, following this way of eating began as a desperate plan to lose weight and evolved into a journey to manage my health and not just my weight. While I enjoy eating the best foods of my life and losing weight, I also have come to appreciate that my overall health has improved. I no longer need any of the four medications that I was on before I started keto. I no longer wait in the car or at the hotel while my family hikes. Now I’m the one who suggests that we go for walk or go kayaking or play at the pool. My husband and I have been on a ketogenic diet since June 2013, yet one of our physicians still asks whether this “diet” is sustainable in spite of our having lost a combined 180 lbs! Moreover, my husband's blood pressure has gone from the verge of needing medication to being low normal. Still, the physician asks if we can sustain it long term. In fact, more than one medical professional has told me that this way of eating is “too difficult to follow” or “too restrictive”. One of the goals of this cookbook is to prove that notion wrong. This cookbook has the "everyday" recipes that my family and I have enjoyed on our very own journey to health. There are some low carb “treat”, but the majority of the recipes in this book are the simple recipes that have become part of our day to day lives. There are delicious, filling breakfasts that will keep your tummy happy when it’s tired of scrambled eggs and bacon and hearty sides that will never make you feel deprived. This is “diet” food that you will be proud to share at any potluck and your “carbivore” friends will expect you to share! I snuck in a few very low carb treats for birthdays, holidays, or special occasions because these are the foods with which we have also celebrated on our journey. It is my sincere wish that these recipes can help you sustain a very low carb diet as a delicious life style. You can learn more about my journey from my YouTube channel, Cooking Keto with Kristie at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFGt... . The Belgian Cookbook
Mrs. Brian Luck - 1915
This dish is not obligatory; recollect that it is but aculinary work of supererogation.SOUP: Let your soup be extremely hot; do not let it be like theLaodiceans. You know what St. John said about them, and you would besorry to think of your soup sharing the fate which he describes with suchsaintly verve. Be sure that your soup has a good foundation, and avoidthe Italian method of making _consommé_, which is to put a pot ofwater on to warm and to drive a cow past the door.FISH: It is a truism to say that fish should be absolutely fresh, yetonly too many cooks think, during the week-end, that fish is like themanna of the Hebrews, which was imbued with Sabbatarian principles thatkept it fresh from Saturday to Monday. I implore of you to thinkdifferently about fish. It is a most nourishing and strengthening food--other qualities it has, too, if one must believe the anecdote of theSultan Saladin and the two anchorites.MEAT: If your meat must be cooked in water, let it not boil but merelysimmer; let the pot just whisper agreeably of a good dish to come. Do youknow what an English tourist said, looking into a Moorish cooking-pot?"What have you got there? Mutton and rice?" "For the moment, Sidi, it ismutton and rice," said the Moorish cook; "but in two hours, inshallah, when the garlic has kissed the pot, it will be the most deliciouscomforter from Mecca to Casa Blanca." Simmer and season, then, yourmeats, and let the onion (if not garlic) just kiss the pot, even if youallow no further intimacy between them. Use bay-leaves, spices, herbs ofall sorts, vinegar, cloves; and never forget pepper and salt.Game is like Love, the best appreciated when it begins to go. Onlyexperience will teach you, on blowing up the breast feathers of apheasant, whether it ought to be cooked to-day or to-morrow. Men, as arule, are very particular about the dressing of game, though they may notall be able to tell, like the Frenchman, upon which of her legs apartridge was in the habit of sitting. Game should be underdone ratherthan well done; it should never be without well-buttered toast underneathit to collect the gravy, and the knife to carve it with should be very, very sharp.VEGETABLES: Nearly all these are at their best (like brunettes) justbefore they are fully matured. So says a great authority, and no doubt heis thinking of young peas and beans, lettuces and asparagus. Try to dresssuch things as potatoes, parsnips, cabbages, carrots, in other ways thansimply boiled in water, for the water often removes the flavor and leavesthe fiber. Do not let your vegetable-dishes remind your guests ofFroissart's account of Scotchmen's food, which was "rubbed in a littlewater."

Southern Heirloom Cooking: 200 Treasured Feel-Good Recipes
Norma Jean McQueen Haydel - 2016
But she didn’t measure when she cooked. Or write things down.Norma Jean’s brother Horace got to worrying about this. He cooked, too, but his repertoire wasn’t as vast as Norma Jean’s. So he began bothering her about writing down how she made her many dishes.“I didn’t want Norma Jean’s recipes, or our Mama’s recipes, to be lost. We have kids coming. And other folks love to eat at my sister’s table, too.”So the two got busy recording their treasured family recipes from the South. This collection of more than 250 dishes includes their best ones. “This is food you will absolutely enjoy,” said Horace. “Traditional, full of marvelous flavor, ‘enhanced’ old-timeys.”Norma Jean and Horace put together the full line-up: crawfish bisque, poblano cream soup, wilted spinach salad, smothered pork ribs, zesty broasted chicken, baked catfish, cajun rice jambalaya, stuffed cornbread, five-flavor pound cake, margarita pie, and on and on.Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Good Books and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of cookbooks, including books on juicing, grilling, baking, frying, home brewing and winemaking, slow cookers, and cast iron cooking.
