Blood on the Leaves

Jeff Stetson - 2004
All were acquitted of brutally torturing and killing African-Americans during the most explosive period of the civil rights movement. And all are being murdered in the same way as their victims—hung, burned to death, gutted. Now one district attorney must play a deadly game of cat and mouse as he prosecutes the most wrenching case of his career—and walks a dangerous line between retribution, duty, and revenge…For James Reynolds, Mississippi’s only black deputy district attorney, success is almost enough to heal the pain of growing up during brutal segregation—and ease the recurring, unexplained nightmares he’s had sinc childhood. But he knows this case will be more disturbing than anything he’s ever faced—especially when he discovers a local university class that is exposing the perpetrators of “unsolved” civil rights-era murders. Among the class’s unshakable and most dedicated attendees: Brandon Hamilton, a graduate student as relentless about the truth as he was ferocious on the playing field; and teaching assistant Regina Davis, beautiful, brainy, and ruthlessly calculating. Then there’s their renowned, charismatic instructor, Professor Martin Matheson. The handsome son of a venerated African-American civil rights leader, he exhibits a gift for rhetoric that is gaining him fervent public support…and enabling him to play all too well on Reynolds’s professional and personal vulnerabilities.Amid an overwhelming media blitz and mounting racial tensions, Reynolds must not only confront the secrets he’s run from all these years—but play out a devastating endgame against a killer willing to use the law against itself and go to the most deadly extremes for “justice.”A riveting game of intellectual chess that crescendos into a powerful courtroom confrontation, Blood on the Leaves will leave you disturbed, surprised, and, ultimately, dazzled.

Spoiled Rotten

Brandi Johnson - 2008
She thought she was better than everybody, or rather you thought it. But remember the day you found out that she lived in the projects/ghetto/hood just like everybody else? You were shocked, and now less envious of her, knowing she came from exactly where you did. Well, Trouble is that chick! Spoiled rotten by her brother, who has a complex occupation, and her boyfriend, the star B-ball player at their high school being sought after by colleges across the map who don't mind lacing him with SUVs and putting money in his pocket to sway him towards attending their university to play ball--Trouble seems to have it all. And what she doesn't have, she manages to get. But unlike some of the chicks in these other street lit tales; she doesn't have to use her body to get things. She uses the ghetto diva attitude that makes people believe she deserves the best and therefore they do back flips trying to provide. This urban novel has a completely different twist than any other written thus far. In Trouble's journey, she loses her brother, who she is closer to than bark on a tree, and feels as though it's the end of the world. But when she finds out that the person who murdered him had once tried to get with her, a huge scheme comes to mind in order for her to seek revenge. She pretends to like her brother's killer in order to get him right where she wants him, but her plan backfires when something happens that she never saw coming. She falls in love with her brother's killer.
