    W4964 was the seventieth Lanc to arrive on squadron, in mid April 1943. She flew her first op on the 20th, by which time No 9 had lost forty one of their Lancs to enemy action and another five had been transferred to other squadrons and lost by them. A further thirteen of the seventy would soon be lost by No 9. All of the remaining eleven would be damaged, repaired, transferred to other squadrons or training units, and lost to enemy action or crashes except for three which, in some kind of retirement, would last long enough to be scrapped after the war. Only one of the seventy achieved a century of ops or anything like it: W4964 WS-J. Across all squadrons and all the war, the average life of a Lancaster was 22.75 sorties, but rather less for the front-line squadrons going to Germany three and four times a week in 1943 and '44, which was when W4964 was flying her 107 sorties, all with No 9 Squadron and all from RAF Bardney. The first was Stettin (Szczecin in modern Poland), and thereafter she went wherever 9 Squadron went, to Berlin, the Ruhr, and most of the big ops of the time such as Peenemunde and Hamburg. She was given a special character as J-Johnny Walker, 'still going strong' and on September 15 1944, skippered by Flight Lieutenant James Douglas Melrose, her Tallboy special bomb was the only one to hit the battleship Tirpitz. During her career, well over two hundred airmen flew in J. None were killed while doing so, but ninety-six of them died in other aircraft. This is their story, and the story of one lucky Lancaster.

    The typed recipes and instructions are a direct translation of the handwriting seen in the photographs on each page. To preserve its authenticity, no extra instructions have been added. The cover is a photograph of the actual book, (with title added.) Bring your tablet into the rural English kitchen of 1910. Relive the tastes and smells of an age where there were no microwave ovens or digital scales. Back then, cooking was done on a Yorkshire Range. The book was compiled before the First World War when young women visited each other's houses swapping recipes, as well as catching up on the latest gossip. Funny little markings on some of the recipes, ( a cross "X" with a dot between each line ) was a star rating, four dots being the best. The recipes included instructions like "place the chocolate and sugar into a bowl and warm by the fire, stirring until melted" ( you will probably pop them into a microwave for a few seconds ) The hand written recipes contain simple ingredients available at that time. Self raising flour was not in common use, baking powder was used with plain flour. UK measurements are used; oz, lbs. and pints. Gills and quarts are given as mL and fluid ozs. Also terms like "bake in a quick oven" are used, a handy guide to all modern settings is given on the "Conversions" page. This is not a book for the complete novice. You won't find any "preheat the oven to 200° " instructions. Their skills were not only in baking, but also maintaining the oven at a constant temperature, remember the heat came from the coal and wood, no thermostatic controls or glass fronted oven in doors existed back then. However, if you can bake scones and know by looking at things when they are "done," you will enjoy experimenting as they did, adapting the recipes to your own taste.     Following defeat in the Ardennes Offensive, Adolf Hitler and the German leadership faced the question of how best to use what little offensive firepower remained to them, as represented by the Sixth SS Panzer Army. Hitler’s obsession with protecting the last source of natural oil available to the Reich compelled this decision, one made against the strong opposition of his military advisers. The resulting offensive, code-named Operation Spring Awakening, was a disaster for Nazi Germany, but a boon for postwar Europe. Heavily outnumbered and lacking supplies, especially fuel, the Sixth SS Panzer Army nevertheless delayed the Red Army long enough for American and British forces to occupy much of western and southern Austria. There is, therefore, a strong likelihood the presence in Austria of Sixth SS Panzer Army saved that country from being overrun completely by the Red Army, and possibly being included in the Warsaw Pact as a Soviet satellite.
