Iron Dogs (Fire and Rust #1)

Anthony James - 2019
Humanity is within months of losing an interstellar war to a species of aliens known as Fangrin. Giving up isn’t an option. Victory doesn’t seem like an option either. When assault craft pilot Commander Jake Griffin is sent out with the Eternity carrier group to hunt down and destroy enemy facilities, he has no idea what’s coming to him. The planet Graxol-4 out in the middle of nowhere hides a critical enemy base with vital resources just waiting to be stolen. The only problem is, it’s guarded by a war fleet and surface troops, while the planet itself is toxic and gripped by constant storms. The coming fight will be relentless. It will test Griffin’s combat skills to the limit against a vastly superior foe. In a way, he’s got it easy – the troops on the ground will have to beat the Fangrin in the most challenging circumstances imaginable. That job falls to Lieutenant Tanner Conway, a man who just wants to go home to his family. Victory on Graxol-4 may not win the war, but it will buy time for humanity to regroup, toughen up and come back harder. However, a third - unknown - player has an interest in this game and their involvement will turn everything on its head. Iron Dogs is a sci-fi action adventure in which human bravery and technology come up against the might of an alien war machine in the harshest of environments.

300 Suns

Allan Ferrenberg - 2013
But they refuse to communicate with us! Why do they ignore us, and what do they want? Tom Kingsley is an astronomer at the right place and the right time to get the first photographs of the alien spacecraft. As a result, he becomes the leading scientific expert on the aliens and their technology. (When you are the only one in a field, you are the expert.) Tom and his team work to understand the science behind the aliens’ remarkable and overwhelming technologies and the powerful and bright “stars” that they begin to place in orbit about the earth. As governments, the scientific community, and ordinary people try to understand and deal with the situation, the number of these “stars” slowly increases. Soon the Earth will grow warmer. And neither Tom, nor anyone else, can imagine a peaceful purpose for these “stars”.This is a hard science fiction novel situated in the very near future. It is written by a former “rocket scientist” and part-time engineering professor. It contains a brief appendix for those who desire a more detailed explanation of the science that is the basis of this novel.

Times Without Number

John Brunner - 1962
Even the most insignificant nudging of the past could entirely alter the present! And he suspected that a maniacal genius crazed with a desire for nationalist vindication had plotted to alter the victorious outcome of the Spanish Armada of 1588 - thus changing recorded history and perhaps even imperiling the Imperial Spanish Empire of 1988!If Don Miguel did not successfully intercede, when he came back to the present he might find a different world...a different time...a time in which he probably didn't even exist!Although termed a novel it is really a group of three novelettes previously published under the titles:Spoil of Yesterday (1969 revised/expanded edition)The Word Not Written (1969 revised/expanded edition)The Fullness of Time (1969 revised/expanded edition)

Promises of London

Hugh Howey - 2014
It can be read in ten minutes. Please don't purchase this expecting a novel for your dollar. This story was written in a small cafe on the corner of Bleeker and Grove in New York City on Tuesday, May 27th. The idea came to me yesterday while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. I saw the locks on several of the small cables on the bridge. I remembered my time in both London and Paris, taking pictures of all the love locks on bridges there. And I thought about all the couples those locks represent. I wondered how many are still together.Maybe this story isn't worth your dollar. If I could price a work on Amazon for less, I would. It is what it is. I hope this will be the first of many short pieces that I write and publish in a single day while recording what I'm thinking and where I am when I write them. For those who take the plunge, I hope you get your money's worth. Thank you for all of your support.-Hugh
