Speciation
Jerry A. Coyne - 2004
Thus, the literature on speciation, as well as the number of researchers and students working in this area, has grown explosively. Despite thesedevelopments, there has been no book-length treatment of speciation in many years. As a result, both the seasoned scholar and the newcomer to evolutionary biology had no ready guide to the recent literature on speciation--a body of work that is enormous, scattered, and increasingly technical.Although several excellent symposium volumes have recently appeared, these collections do not provide a unified, critical, and up-to-date overview of the field. Speciation is designed to fill this gap.Aimed at professional biologists, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates, Speciation covers both plants and animals (the first book on this subject to do so), and deals with all relevant areas of research, including biogeography, field work, systematics, theory, and genetic and molecularstudies. It gives special emphasis to topics that are either controversial or the subject of active research, including sympatric speciation, reinforcement, the role of hybridization in speciation, the search for genes causing reproductive isolation, and mounting evidence for the role of natural andsexual selection in the origin of species. The authors do not hesitate to take stands on these and other controversial issues. This critical and scholarly book will be invaluable to researchers in evolutionary biology and is also ideal for a graduate-level course on speciation.
Fundamentals of Molecular Spectroscopy
Colin N. Banwell - 1983
It remains an elementary and non-mathematical introduction to molecular spectroscopy that emphasizes the overall unity of the subject and offers a pictorial perception rather than a mathematical description of the principles of spectroscopy.

The March: A Forgotten Legion short story
Ben Kane - 2018
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SHORT STORY, NOT A FULL LENGTH NOVEL. ABOUT THE SHORT STORY’S PRICE: Hello, you lovely people. Odd to talk about money straight up, but I know that some of you might be thinking, £2.49 is a lot for a short story. Let me explain how it works. A rate of 20% VAT (Value Added Tax) applies to eBooks in the UK. This doesn’t apply to ‘real’ paper books. That means 42p of the £2.49 goes straight to the British government. Amazon takes around 5p to deliver the story to your Kindle, then takes another 61p as its cut. The remainder, £1.41, goes in the ratio 75% to Park in the Past* – that’s £1.06 for each story sold – and 25% to me, which means I will get 35p. Not much, but it’s just to cover my time. Once the figures are broken down, the total price doesn’t seem that high, to me at least. I hope you agree. Think of it in terms of a pint of beer or a cup of coffee: they cost £2-4, depending on where you live. This story will give you more enjoyment (I think!) than either of those things, and last for a longer time, and cost you less money. Plus you’re helping to build a Roman fort in Britain, the likes of which has not been seen in almost two millennia! *Park in the Past is an extraordinary project in northwest Britain – near Chester, just over the border in Wales. Set on a 120 acre site in the beautiful Welsh countryside, it aims to build a second century AD Roman marching fort. I’ve managed to raise more than £20,000 for the project, but as you can appreciate a lot more is needed. Please visit the Park’s site at www.parkinthepast.org.uk – and donate if you can. Even a small donation makes a huge difference. Thank you! This is a first for me, self-publishing a short story. It’s been an exciting project since the day I did the poll on Facebook, asking you lovely people which of my characters you wanted me to write about. The character from the Forgotten Legion won out, narrowly, and this is the result. The one hundred and something people who backed the Kickstarter campaign got to read this story almost 9 months ago, but now you can too. Enjoy the story, and please email me if you have any questions about it or anything else – ben@benkane.net Ben

Rhythms of the Brain
György Buzsáki - 2006
This book provides eloquent support for the idea that spontaneous neuron activity, far from being mere noise, is actually the source of our cognitive abilities. It takes a fresh look at the co-evolution of structure and function in the mammalian brain, illustrating how self-emerged oscillatory timing is the brains fundamental organizer of neuronal information. The small world-like connectivity of the cerebral cortex allows for global computation on multiple spatial and temporal scales. The perpetual interactions among the multiple network oscillators keep cortical systems in a highly sensitive metastable state and provide energy-efficient synchronizing mechanisms via weak links. In a sequence of cycles, Gyrgy Buzski guides the reader from the physics of oscillations through neuronal assembly organization to complex cognitive processing and memory storage. His clear, fluid writing accessible to any reader with some scientific knowledge is supplemented by extensive footnotes and references that make it just as gratifying and instructive a read for the specialist. The coherent view of a single author who has been at the forefront of research in this exciting field, this volume is essential reading for anyone interested in our rapidly evolving understanding of the brain.

The Art of Teaching
Jay Parini - 2004
In The Art of Teaching, writer and critic Jay Parini looks back over his own decades of trials, errors, and triumphs, in an intimate memoir that brims with humor, encouragement, and hard-won wisdom about the teacher's craft. Here is a godsend for instructors of all levels, offering valuable insight into the many challenges that educators face, from establishing a persona in the classroom, to fostering relationships with students, to balancing teaching load with academic writing and research. Insight abounds. Parini shows, for instance, that there is nothing natural about teaching. The classroom is a form of theater, and the teacher must play various roles. A good teacher may look natural, but that's the product of endless practice. The book also considers such topics as the manner of dress that teachers adopt (and what this says about them as teachers), the delicate question of politics in the classroom, the untapped value of emeritus professors, and the vital importance of a settled, disciplined life for a teacher and a writer. Parini grounds all of this in personal stories of his own career in the academy, tracing his path from unfocused student--a self-confessed tough nut to crack--to passionate writer, scholar, and teacher, one who frankly admits making many mistakes over the years. Every year, thousands of newly minted college teachers embark on their careers, most with scant training in their chosen profession. The Art of Teaching is a perfect book for these young educators as well as anyone who wants to learn more about this difficult but rewarding profession.
