I-SPY : A peep into the world of Spies

Amit Bagaria - 2019
I am sure you’ve seen at least one, if not more of the 26 films made on fictional British spy 007. You may’ve also seen TV shows like The Americans, Blindspot, Chuck, Covert Affairs, Homeland, Nikita, Quantico, The Blacklist, and/or The Night Manager. I wrote this book after I realised that the average person may not know even one-sixth of what I know about spies and spying. Almost each of the Top 50 nations (by GDP, population or military power) has a spy agency/service. Many countries have more than one ‘secret service’ or ‘intelligence agency’. USA has 16. Some countries’ spy agencies are more powerful than entire smaller nations, with annual budgets larger than their GDPs. This books attempts to tell the story of 20 of the world’s largest and most powerful spy agencies, details their important missions, reveals their darkest secrets, and gives you an inside perspective of the often quite gory but thrilling ‘world of spies’. It gives you a 360º view of those spy agencies you only read about or see in a movie or TV show. With one chapter per agency, you can read only chapters you may be interested in. The life of most spies is not as glamorous as it is made out to be. You may think it is all about high-tech and guns and car chases and ‘hot’ women, but that’s not the case. In the real spy world, the techniques boil down to the interpretation of basic human psychology. Even though a spy learns several action techniques on how to get out of a dangerous situation, including how to withstand torture, if he/she is resorting to car chases, it means they’re doing something wrong. Spies don’t get paid very well. Gambling at a casino or flying on a private jet may be part of the job, but a spy doesn’t get to spend this kind of money on personal expenses. Spies cannot disclose the nature of their work to their family and friends, to maintain secrecy. Many have to live away from home for weeks, months, even years. Married life is a mess, as the spouse starts suspecting the spy of having an affair. Who can become a spy? Do you need a law enforcement (police) or military background? Not really. Spies have degrees as diverse as law, political science, finance, economics – even professional athletes have become successful spies.

Tony Ditcham - 2013

Beginning Of The End: The Leadership Of SS Obersturmbannführer Jochen Peiper

Han Bouwmeester - 2004
The name Peiper will always be linked to the Malmédy Massacre, the death of Belgian civilians and more than seventy American soldiers, but there is still a myth around Peiper. Why was a twenty-nine year old Waffen-SS officer chosen to lead the German spearhead unit during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944? Peiper was a special leader within the one of the most elite Waffen-SS divisions, the Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler. Peiper was charismatic and extreme loyal to his unit. His men trusted him as a leader, even under the most extreme conditions. In Germany he was a well-known war hero. It was a logical decision that Peiper became the commander of the spearhead unit, but there were other factors leading to this decision: tactical considerations, a we-know-what-to-expect-principle, and Peiper was lucky that he was still alive and serving in the Waffen-SS.

Dirty Little Secrets of World War II: Military Information No One Told You about the Greatest, Most Terrible War in History

James F. Dunnigan - 1994
Like its successful predecessor, "Dirty Little Secrets," Dunnigan and Nofi's new book vividly brings to life all theaters and participants of the war. Revelations include:- The real death count for the war, and why it has never been previously released.- The "new age" general who refused to smoke or drink, who lived on a vitamin-enriched diet, who opposed animal experimentation, and who regularly consulted his astrologer. - How equipment developed for the war led to such modern high-tech innovations as "smart bombs," electronic warfare, and nuclear missles. - The lackadaisical relationship between Germany and Japan throughout the war.- Tricky bits of information about the lingering effects of the war -- like the thousands of live shells and mines that are still buried in Europe and off the East Coast of America.

Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1943-1945: Red Steamroller

Robert Forczyk - 2016
The tide of the war had turned. Their combined arms technique, which had swept Soviet forces before it during 1941 and 1942, had lost its edge. Thereafter the war on the Eastern Front was dominated by tank-led offensives and, as Robert Forczyk shows, the Red Army s mechanized forces gained the upper hand, delivering a sequence of powerful blows that shattered one German defensive line after another. His incisive study offers fresh insight into how the two most powerful mechanized armies of the Second World War developed their tank tactics and weaponry during this period of growing Soviet dominance. He uses German, Russian and English sources to provide the first comprehensive overview and analysis of armored warfare from the German and Soviet perspectives. This major study of the greatest tank war in history is compelling reading."

The Double-Cross System: The Incredible True Story of How Nazi Spies Were Turned into Double Agents

J.C. Masterman - 1972
The man who wrote it in 1945 was J. C. Masterman, MI5 recruit and leader of the shadowy XX Committee. He was the mastermind behind one of the war’s most remarkable achievements: finding, turning and then running almost every Nazi agent to penetrate the British Isles. No man knew more about the dangers of double-dealing and counter-espionage, and in writing his report, Masterman was keen to give the most complete account possible (albeit braced with a dry wit). The exploits of the intelligence service make hair-raising reading: some German agents made attempts to escape, overpowering their guards; others had to be trusted to meet their German paymasters alone. On a daily or weekly basis, the committee had to decide what information to leak to the enemy – should they seek to mislead, or divulge truthful intelligence in order to build conviction for a future move? Occasional failures (‘Tricycle’ picked up information that pointed to Pearl Harbour, but a lack of Anglo-American co-operation at the time meant it was not acted upon), were counteracted by the enormous success of ‘Operation Fortitude’, a significant campaign of misinformation to disguise the true location of the D-day landings.Redolent with a sense of immediacy and absolute authenticity, it is impossible to get closer to the desperate world of war-time espionage than this first-hand account written by a key player of the game.
