Already Gone (A Detective McDaniel Thriller Book 4)
Axel Blackwell - 2021
It's a tense arrangement not helped by Jayda’s drug use and her new boyfriend’s frequent visits. One Friday night, an argument turns physical and the tensions boil over into bloodshed. The following morning, a neighbor finds the front door ajar, the house trashed, and a puddle of blood soaking into the bedroom carpet. Detective Darren McDaniel and his partner, Brent Vanderwyk, quickly determine it’s a case of domestic violence turned deadly. But both Levi and Jayda are missing – as is the little girl.As the detectives plunge into the hunt for a suspect, a body and a missing toddler, the case becomes increasingly bizarre. The couple have ties to money laundering, drug trafficking, organized crime, and even darker secrets. As much as Levi and Jayda hated each other, plenty of other people had reason to want either or both of them dead. With their suspect list steadily growing, and the missing toddler’s time slipping away, McDaniel and Vanderwyk race against the clock, piecing the puzzle together, hoping to save little Cami before her time runs out.

But the question on all their minds is: will the group’s combined skills and knowledge prove to be enough to survive?***** REVIEW - 5.0 out of 5 stars *****Grabs you from the first page. This book literally started off with a "bang". As I have said in other reviews I am always skeptical of new post-apocalyptic fiction. I was pleasantly surprised and entertained thought out the book. I know this sounds a bit silly, but I really like that they had characters in the book that weren't young and fit and of military origin. Since I am over 50 years old, I like it when writers use our experience and knowledge to educate the young. If an "event" were to happen, a large number of the population is over 50. Characters were multi dimensional and had flaws, a plus for the readers. Scenario was realistic. Living in hot and dry California, I swear I could feel the hot, dusty weather leap off the pages. I was very entertained and it kept my interest to the point that I finished it in 2 days. I look forward to the next installment.Special thanks to our tireless beta readers, copy editor, blocker, graphic designer and family, without whom this work would have suffered. The Whiskey Baron
Jon Sealy - 2014
Two men have been shot dead on Highway 9 in front of the Hillside Inn, a one-time boardinghouse that is now just a front for Larthan Tull's liquor business. When Sheriff Chambers arrives to investigate, witnesses say a man named Mary Jane Hopewell walked into the tavern, dragged two of Tull's runners into the street, and laid them out with a shotgun. Sheriff Chambers's investigation leads him into the Bell village, where Mary Jane's family lives a quiet, hardscrabble life of working in the cotton mill. While the weary sheriff digs into the mystery and confronts the county's underground liquor operation, the whiskey baron himself is looking for vengeance. Mary Jane has gotten in the way of his business, and you don't do that to Larthan Tull and get away with it. Hailed as a "grand new talent" (Bret Lott) and a "significant new voice in Southern fiction" (Ron Rash), Jon Sealy has written a haunting debut novel. With its unforgettable characters and evocative setting, The Whiskey Baron is a gripping drama about family ties and bad choices, about the folly of power and the limitations of the law.
