Extensive illustrations and imaginative, enlightening use of graphics help to make each book in this series livelier, easier, and more fun to use than ordinary literature plot summaries. The Mary Shelley Reader

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley - 1990
Until now, however, there has been no anthology of Shelley's work. The Mary Shelley Reader is a unique new collection that fills this gap. In addition to the original and complete 1818 version of her masterpiece Frankenstein, the book offers a new text of the novella Mathilda--an extraordinary tale of incest, guilt, and atonement that was not published until 1959 and has been out of print since then. Also included are seven short stories that range from gentle satire to fantastic tales of reanimation, diabolical transformation, and immortality. Eight essays and reviews are reprinted here for the first time since their original publication, and eleven representative letters help bring to life a remarkable literary and historical figure--author, daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley. An illuminating introduction, a chronology, explanatory notes, and a bibliography make The Mary Shelley Reader indispensable for readers of English Romantic literature.

Castle Rackrent and Ennui

Maria Edgeworth - 1809
Thady will defend his masters to the end, but eventually his naivety and blind loyalty cause him to ignore the warning signs as the family's excesses lead them to ruin. This volume also includes Ennui, the entertaining 'confessions' of the Earl of Glenthorn, a bored, spoiled aristocrat. Desperate to be free from 'the demon of ennui', Glenthorn's quest for happiness takes him through violence and revolution, and leads to intriguing twists of fate. Both novels offer a darkly comic and satirical exposé of the Irish class system, and a portrait of a nation in turmoil.

Khaled Hosseini: "A Thousand Splendid Suns"

Ayse Gökce - 2011
Today every school in Germany offers English as school subject, even the primary schools. Consequently it must be put great emphasis on teaching it accurately by taking into consideration any aspect of English language acquisition when learning it, for example the acquisition of a distinctive vocabulary, the ability to use grammar rules correctly, the ability to spell correctly, the ability to understand what is been said when native speakers talk in English which we call listening comprehension. Another very important part of learning English as a foreign language is undisputedly reading comprehension. The ability to read out correctly, to understand what is been read and to be able to work with a text effectively is not only a competence that should be concentrated on in the foreign language but also in the mother tongue. The PISA Study is a perfect proof of this which will be mentioned later on. In this paper I will try to accentuate the importance and significance of reading in the English class. In order to illustrate this I will introduce the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, an American author and doctor with Afghan origins, and use it for the elaboration of the importance of reading activities in the English class. Initially I will focus on the didactic analysis which includes the reference to the syllabus. The syllabus is of course the signpost in terms of guidelines when planning the lessons, choosing age-appropriate media and methods. What role does reading play in this context? What is said in the syllabus when it come

The Ghosts of Landover Mystery Series Box Set, Books 1-3: Three Complete Paranormal Cozy Mysteries In One

Etta Faire - 2020
As soon as she opens the door, she sees him hovering in her living room, between the crimson settee and the dogwood-patterned rug. He wants her to solve his murder and says the best way to do that is by combining energy with him in a channeling to relive the night minute by minute and gather clues, together. Of course, she can hardly wait. It’s the beginning of a strange new journey for Carly, one that involves a curse, a bunch of ghost clients impatiently waiting to get their cold cases solved by reliving their murders, and a dead ex-husband tagging along, pretending to be her Watson. Book 2: After the Suffragette’s Suicide Carly meets her first ghost-client: suffragette and local women's rights leader, Bessilyn Hind. According to history, Bessilyn committed suicide at her 35th birthday party after her fiancé broke up with her. Only one problem: she doesn't remember it that way. She's appalled history books have been written that imply she would do something so drastic over a man. And she wants to know who murdered her (along with retractions on history, pronto).Through channeling, Carly is taken right to the party in 1906 to figure things out for the suffragette. Book 3: Behind the Boater’s Cover-Up The third book features a story the Landover locals refer to as "the accident." In 1957, a group of recent high-school graduates went late-night partying on a boat after a sock hop. They didn't return. In the end, it was ruled an unfortunate accident. The only problem: Gloria Thomas, one of the partiers that night, has a different version. And Carly is going to help her set the record straight. However, while channeling with the ghost and reliving the memories from 1957, Carly sees her older friends back when they were younger, and the shocking way the accident was covered up. Turns out, there are a lot of secrets in Landover, and like the dead, they're much safer buried. This box set contains the first three books in the Ghosts of Landover Mystery series.
