Murder for Hire: My Life As the Country's Most Successful Undercover Agent

Jack Ballentine - 2009
His specialty: posing as an undercover hit man. None of the people who hired him had any inkling that he was actually a cop, and his work led to a perfect rate of twenty-four convictions out of twenty-four indictments on murder conspiracy charges.Murder for Hire is Ballentine's story. He worked with criminals of all sorts, from vengeful spouses and partners to the criminally insane, all who had one thing in common: the desire to have someone killed. Ballentine could change his character at the drop of a hat, often imitating characters and "bad guys" from television and movies. In assuming an alternate identity and developing a reputation among the Phoenix underground---bikers, strippers, junkies, and thugs---he developed an intricate network of sources who fed him work and kept him extremely busy. All the while, the author strove for the semblance of a normal life and balanced his rough-and-tumble career with a new wife and stepson. His story is a unique look at how law enforcement delves into the heart of the criminal world.

Chief: My Life In The L.A.P.D.

Daryl Francis Gates - 1992
His detractors claim he's a racist, a loose cannon--and worse. In 43 years with the L.A.P.D., he's been involved with cases from Patty Hearst to the Hillside Strangler, the Watts Riots to the Black Panthers, the Robert Kennedy assassination to the video-taped beating of Rodney King. Now Gates tells all. 16-page photo insert.

Smokescreen

Robert Sabbag - 2002
Author Robert Sabbag tells the tale of Allen Long, who got involved in this unsavory business in the 1970s because he wanted to provide high-quality cannabis for his buddies and also for the sheer adventure of it. Some readers will find Long a disconcerting protagonist--he's a drug smuggler, after all--though it may appeal to advocates of drug legalization and readers of High Times. Sabbag essentially romanticizes Long's activities, such as when he writes about the "rather consoling absence of gunplay" that marked the business of marijuana smuggling in its primitive past. The storytelling is adequate, but parts of Loaded are plainly padded. Here's a bit of sample dialogue: "This is really great pot." "You like that?" "I don't think I've ever smoked anything better." A better and more hardheaded book on Colombian drug smuggling is Mark Bowden's Killing Pablo. --John Miller

The Trigger: Narratives of the American Shooter

Daniel J. Patinkin - 2018
A mother's untimely death causes a boy's emotional spiral that culminates in drug-related shooting and twenty-three years in prison; an honor roll student and all-American athlete drunkenly brandishes a shotgun and accidentally shoots a man; a fresh, hopeful Chicago police officer kills an offender while off duty and saves a fellow patrolman; a blue-collar worker suffers a psychotic break and kills his mother. In 2014, there were 8,124 gunshot homicides; the death rate in America from gun homicides is about thirty-one per million people—far higher than almost every other developed nation. With police incidents, mass shootings, and acts of terrorism, guns remain a controversial and inflammatory topic in the United States. It can be easy to reduce the issue to numbers, or focus on racial tensions or political causes. One quickly forgets that behind each act of gun violence there is a story, a coming together of events that caused it. In The Trigger, Daniel Patinkin brings those stories to the forefront, building moving narratives from exhaustive interviews with six individuals, each of whom have shot and killed someone under different circumstances. In each profile, Patinkin strives to remind us that every perpetrator of gun violence has a face, and that the shooter's story deserves as much attention as the victim’s.

Poisoning the Press: Richard Nixon, Jack Anderson, and the Rise of Washington's Scandal Culture

Mark Feldstein - 2010
Nixon's operatives are ordered to "stop Anderson at all costs"--permanently. Across the street from the White House, they huddle in a hotel basement to conspire. Should they try "Aspirin Roulette" and break into Anderson's home to plant a poisoned pill in one of his medicine bottles? Could they smear LSD on the journalist's steering wheel, so that he would absorb it through his skin, lose control of his car, and crash? Or stage a routine-looking mugging, making Anderson appear to be one more fatal victim of Washington's notorious street crime?"Poisoning the Press: Richard Nixon, Jack Anderson, and the Rise of Washington's Scandal Culture" recounts not only the disturbing story of an unprecedented White House conspiracy to assassinate a journalist, but also the larger tale of the bitter quarter-century battle between the postwar era's most embattled politician and its most reviled newsman. The struggle between Nixon and Anderson included bribery, blackmail, forgery, spying, and burglary as well as the White House murder plot. Their vendetta symbolized and accelerated the growing conflict between the government and the press, a clash that would long outlive both men.Mark Feldstein traces the arc of this confrontation between a vindictive president and a flamboyant, crusading muckraker who rifled through garbage and swiped classified papers in pursuit of his prey--stoking the paranoia in Nixon that would ultimately lead to his ruin. The White House plot to poison Anderson, Feldstein argues, is a metaphor for the poisoned political atmosphere that would follow, and the toxic sensationalism that contaminates contemporary media discourse.Melding history and biography, "Poisoning the Press" unearths significant new information from more than two hundred interviews and thousands of declassified documents and tapes. This is a chronicle of political intrigue and the true price of power for politicians and journalists alike. The result--Washington's modern scandal culture--was Richard Nixon's ultimate revenge.
