     After a period as a fighter pilot in World War Two and then some time at university studying aeronautical engineering Crossfield joined NASA’s predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. A number of years later Crossfield became both a test pilot and design consultant for the X-15 rocket-powered plane.
