As they travel, Yancey teaches him things like building a fire that will at least keep him alive. He also finds out Nate is running away from a failed relationship. As they travel, they help out an older man, Brother Alphonse, who invites them to spend the night at the compound where he lives. There, they meet Father Josiah and learn this is not a place they want to stay. As they leave, Yancey sees Walter Graves, a gunfighter. Dodson continues to follow Yancey. And gets into a bit of trouble along the way.

    Four years ago, his father had handed him a box containing both guns, completely disassembled, and told him he could have them, when and if he could put them back together. It took him a week, but he did it. He didn’t do it to please his father, whom he hated, nor his mother, whom he loved. He did it to prove to himself that he could, and as a result of hours of practice at the back of the property, he rarely missed with either gun, and he could draw and fire the pistol in a split second.

    The two men are former Texas Rangers. Along with Sutton's daughter, the former Rangers ride into the Bradshaws with outlaws on their trail, who know that Sutton has a map to buried gold. Sutton's brother years before had buried the gold before being killed by Yavapai Indians, who considered the Bradshaws sacred territory. Kilcannon marries Sutton's daughter, who is then kidnapped by the outlaws, who kill her father. Kilcannon rescues his wife and the two of them find ways to get the gold back to Prescott, the capital of Arizona Territory. Outlaws kidnap Kilcannon's wife again, but she's armed and dangerous. She kills Buster Oldham, leader of the gang of outlaws, with her pocket pistol, and Kilcannon rescues her and kills the last of the outlaws. It's another classic western with a bit of romance by R. O. Lane.

    When marshal Vic Falcone takes a bullet, he calls on the town preacher Tom McCabe to strap on a gun and wear the badge.     The excitement never slows; outlaws; Indians; a passenger who turns out to be a thief; gunfights; getting lost in the desert, etc. It seems that wherever Colter goes, trouble follows. However, he’s a very resourceful character who can handle anything that comes his way. Although the story-line is fairly traditional, the main characters and some of the events are not. Colter is quite unusual for his time His appearance, personality, style of dress and the equipment and weapons he carries are very unique. He smokes a pipe and loves his coffee, and he is continually making something to suit his needs from what he has on hand. He has a unique rapport with his horse that is exciting, interesting and very often humorous, while his weapons and knowledge of hand-to-hand combat make for some exciting fight scenes. This is not just another “Western”. It has humor, romance and suspense scenes that will keep a reader’s heart pounding. The dialog and the never-ending excitement make a story that is hard to put down.
