An eight-part children's television series was produced by the BBC in 1957 at the Lime Grove Studios in London. In a later edition of The Silver Sword, the book was published with a summary. Joseph Balicki, the head teacher of a school in Warsaw, was arrested by the Gestapo in early 1940 and taken away to a prison camp. His school had been taken over by the Nazis after the invasion of Poland and he was forced to teach lessons entirely in German.
