And yet, Ella tries to keep a brave face, no matter how difficult this becomes.Kit has always been deemed a "dreamer." He values peace above all else. He's never understood the point of certain royal traditions and rituals. He'd rather spend time in his mother's garden than learn to fence or sit for a portrait. A Wish Your Heart Makes: Walt Disney's Cinderella from Animation to Live Action

Charles Solomon - 2015
Although the most popular versions appeared in Charles Perrault's Histoires ou contes du temps pass ("Stories or Fables of Times Past") (1697) and the Grimms' "Fairy Tales" (1812), the story can be traced back to the story of Rhodopis, a Greek slave girl who marries the pharoah of Egypt, which Strabo recorded in the first century B.C.E. In the late nineteenth century, British follklorist Marian Roalfe Cox catalogued 345 variations of the story. For more than two thousand years, children and adults have read and watched as Cinderella endured cruel mistreatment without complaining-and met her prince before the stroke of midnight. A Wish Your Heart Makes will trace the history of the fairy tale, emphasizing its strong ties to Walt Disney and his studio.Major artists who illustrated the story of Cinderella range from Aubrey Beardsley, Edward Burne-Jones, and Walter Crane, to Gustave Dor , Edmund Dulac, John B. Gruelle, and Arthur Rackham. The story has been adapted to the stage many times, including the operas La Cenerentola by Giacomo Rossini and Cendrillon by Jules Massenet, the ballet by Sergei Prokofiev, and musical adaptations by Rogers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim. There have been scores of Cinderella films, beginning with a black and white short in 1907. But the most celebrated is Walt Disney's, one of his most beloved fairy tales-and the film that saved his studio, which had languished in the doldrums after the end of World War II. Years later, when a lunch guest asked Disney what his favorite piece of animation done at his studio, he replied, "I think it would be when Cinderella got her ball gown." The book will conclude with the making of the 2015 live-action film Cinderella directed by Kenneth Branagh, including interviews with Branagh, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anthony Caron-Delion, Patrick Doyle, Dante Ferretti, Derek Jacobi, Lilly James, Aline Brosh McKenna, and Chris Weitz.

The Little Book of the Hidden People: Stories of elves from Icelandic folklore

Alda Sigmundsdóttir - 2015
But what do those elf stories really tell us about the Iceland of old and the people who lived there? In this book, author Alda Sigmundsdóttir presents twenty translated elf stories from Icelandic folklore, along with fascinating notes on the context from which they sprung. The international media has had a particular infatuation with the Icelanders’ elf belief, generally using it to propagate some kind of “kooky Icelanders” myth. Yet Iceland’s elf folklore, at its core, reflects the plight of a nation living in abject poverty on the edge of the inhabitable world, and its people’s heroic efforts to survive, physically, emotionally and spiritually. That is what the stories of the elves, or hidden people, are really about. In a country that was, at times, virtually uninhabitable, where poverty was endemic and death and grief a part of daily life, the Icelanders nurtured a belief in a world that existed parallel to their own. This was the world of the hidden people, which more often than not was a projection of the most fervent dreams and desires of the human population. The hidden people lived inside hillocks, cliffs or boulders, very close to the abodes of the humans. Their homes were furnished with fine, sumptuous objects. Their clothes were luxurious, their adornments beautiful. Their livestock was better and fatter, their sheep yielded more wool than regular sheep, their crops were more bounteous. They even had supernatural powers: they could make themselves visible or invisible at will, and they could see the future. To the Icelanders, stories of elves and hidden people are an integral part of the cultural and psychological fabric of their nation. They are a part of their identity, a reflection of the struggles, hopes, resilience and endurance of their people. All this and more is the subject of this book.

Lila The Werewolf and Other Tales

Peter S. Beagle - 2015
Beagle, 10 of which are collected for the first time. The reprints in this book were originally gathered together in Beagle’s 1997 fiction/nonfiction set, THE RHINOCEROS WHO QUOTED NIETZSCHE. That book is never going to be reissued in any format, so the stories were given a new home here. They include the title piece, which very nearly invented the entire subgenre of urban fantasy; “Professor Gottesman and the Indian Rhinoceros” (Beagle’s personal favorite among all his short fiction); the exquisite “Come Lady Death,” which inspired Neil Gaiman to make Death a young woman in his SANDMAN comic series; and the deceptively simple, heartbreaking/heartwarming truth of “My Daughter’s Name is Sarah.”The 10 new pieces are all from 2009 through 2012, part of Beagle’s astonishing 21st century outpouring of short fiction, during which he has written five times as many stories in just 10 years as he wrote in the previous 40. More amazing still is the diversity of the work, even for an artist long-recognized as hating to repeat himself. In “Music, When Soft Voices Die” Beagle moves beyond the surface trappings of steampunk to reach the dark heart of the world; in “Trinity County, CA” he offers an alternate modern-day California where illegal backwoods meth labs use dragons as fiery watch dogs; and in “Underbridge” he reveals the horrific truth behind a popular Seattle tourist attraction. The seven other new tales in this set are equally wide-ranging, leaping from 17th-century Maine to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Africa and Barsoom. There’s never any guessing where a Beagle story will start, or where it will go—but adventurous readers can be assured they are in the hands of a master. Little Mermaid

Liz Doolittle - 2015
The beautiful illustrations will be found inside the book.Enjoy the reading! Once there was a princess who lived in the sea; a mermaid who was as beautiful as could be. Sirenetta was the youngest daughter of the king; and the kingdom just loved to hear her sing. As she was swimming and playing in the deep; the sea gave a mighty, mighty sweep. A storm had brewed and a ship was going down, and she saw a man that was about to drown. She swam toward him and brought him ashore; she had never touched a human before. When she wanted him to open his eyes; Sirenetta heard other people’s cries. So she swam back for the kingdom in the sea, to fall in love with a human was not to be. She saved a prince and she did not know, and she wanted to be with him so. She decided she wanted to live on land, and she needed the Sea Witch’s helping hand. Now this Sea Witch was cruel and vain, and gave a spell that would cause her pain. The Sea Witch made her human whole, but her legs would hurt her with every stroll. Sirenetta also lost her beautiful voice, but to be with the prince was her choice. With the magic of the witch, she was found; the prince saw her lying on the ground. He asked her for her name but she couldn’t speak, still she looked lovely and very meek. The prince took her in and became his friend, Sirenetta thought it was going to be a happy end. Now the prince’s family threw a party so grand, never before seen in the land. He had fallen in love with a lady quite fair, forgetting that Sirenetta was there. They were to be married very soon, as soon as there was a full moon. But with the magic came a curse, Sirenetta’s fate had become worse. If she did not get the prince’s heart, from this world she would then part. She would be turned into foam, never to return to her undersea home. Sirenetta cried out to the dark sea, wishing to be loved or that she could flee. Then her sisters swam up with a magical knife, to save herself, she must take the prince’s life. “Kill him tonight,” her sisters said, “because we do not want you dead.” Sirenetta could be a mermaid once more, and live untroubled just like before. So on that night she went to his room, carrying a knife that meant his doom. But she could not kill him, not at all- she’d rather take the curse and fall. So Sirenetta was ready to die for love, but then she floated to the skies above! What was happening? She wondered so. The fairies surrounding her would know. “What you did was a selfless and true, The curse was lifted because of you.” She said farewell to her family, from sea to sky, she was now free. Those she loved she could watch up high, as she was now a princess in the sky! AND THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS: There are times when you are called to be brave and there are times when you will need help and that help won’t come from Mom or Dad or the people you know.

Briar Blackwood's Grimmest of Fairytales

Timothy Roderick - 2015
Nearly sixteen, cynical and goth, Briar lives a less-than-fairytale life in the home of her rotten foster mother and snarky foster sisters. With her biting wit and deadpan demeanor, the other kids call her Queen of Darkness. All the better for keeping everyone at arm's distance, she thought. But now she's screwed up by seriously and inconveniently crushing on the most popular guy at school. And if that isn't sucky enough, Briar finds herself suddenly thrust into a hidden bloodthirsty world, filled with dark magic, curses, and poisoned spinning wheels where she learns the deadly truth of her identity and the reason she's never fit in. Can she truly be the fabled Sleeping Beauty? Or has she finally cracked? And, hello! Aren't elves and fairies supposed to be dainty and adorable? If she wanted to deal with drooling, snapping jaws she could have stayed at home. Now she has to rescue the gorgeous guy that may be her one true love, and stop a wicked queen bent on destroying her. Luckily, being a bad-ass has its perks. With an uncontrollable power rising within her, no one knows for sure if Briar has a happily-ever-after future. But if she can handle the mean-girl clique at school, she can damn well go toe-to-toe with ogres, wolves and wicked witches.

Amelia Carruthers - 2015
It includes an in-depth introduction to the fairy tale genre itself, as well as the folkloric provenance of the dark tale of 'Beauty and the Beast'. What is a fairy tale? The 'Origins of Fairy Tales from around the World' series helps to answer this question, by showcasing the amazing breath and diversity involved in classic fairy tales. It focuses on the unusual phenomenon that the same tales, with only minor variations, appear again and again in different cultures - across time and geographical space. Traditionally told as short stories for children, and for adults too, these popular fairy tales will be sure to delight both young and old. Beautifully illustrated, these story books combine the best story-telling, with the best art-work, in order that the two may be fully appreciated.

But despite the visually magical environment she inhabits, Iris finds herself doubting Charlie once again, thanks in no small part to those pesky stepsisters of hers.
