German Girl?

Vivian Bolten Herz - 2012
In thetone of voice that adults reserve for talking to six-year-olds,he asks again, “Now, tell me Vivian, when did you last seeyour Papa?”I shake my head and say, “No, I haven’t seen him for along time. I don’t know where he is.”The finger comes again, hooking my chin and forcingmy head up and toward him. I look into the pale, wateryeyes of the man in the gray Gestapo uniform. My heartpulses so hard in my ears that I can barely hear his words.“Have you seen Papa this week, Liebchen” (Sweetie), hecoos. “Who are his friends?” I shake my head “No,” knowingthat a few hours earlier Papa came to our street, near theapartment. He stood in the shadow of the corner house, watching me. I knew that he had come to see me, andsomehow, instinctively, I also knew that I should not go tohim and that he could not come to me. We looked at eachother, and then he turned and slipped away. It will bealmost ten years before I would see him again. The Gestapo man stands and abruptly leaves the bedroom. It isn’t until I see him in the living room, talking to Oma, that my tears come.In German Girl?, I reflect on my extraordinary childhood years, 1942 to 1953, growing up in Nazi Germany. As a "Mischling", a child with one Jewish parent and one Christian parent, my experiences during World War II, and its effect on the years that followed, provide a unique picture of wartime life as seen through the eyes of a child. My Lutheran grandparents hid and protected me while my mother was jailed and questioned tortuously on the whereabouts of my father. A Jewish man, my father lived “underground.” In "German Girl", I describe my father’s ingenuity and bravery, the enduring strength of my mother and the simple pleasures and comforting love of my grandparents stolen in a time of horror for so many. I have included copies of historical documents and photographs of the people discussed in the book.* In "German Girl", I have filled my book with memories, pictures, reproductions of forged documents and the incredible story of growing up alongside the appalling destruction of WWII in East Berlin.Copyright © 1998 Vivian Ert Bolten Herz. All rights reserved. The Library of Congress, catalog card number 2005351683United States Holocaust Memorial Museum,Washington D.C.Catalogue card number DS135.G5 H 4659 1998;Jüdisches Museum Berlin, GermanyYad Vashem Library, Jerusalem, Israel., catalog card number 105-0271Yad Vashem - Bet Vahlin Library, Israel., catalog card number HER-09

COAST GUARD INVESTIGATIONS: A 5-Books Military Romance Series

Lola Silverman - 2017
5 books and NO cliffies! Book 1: Pipe Down
There’s nothing like meeting a really terrific woman on board a luxurious yacht travelling through the Aleutian Islands. Brooke is beautiful, talented, and fun to be around. She’s everything a guy like me could want. At least that would be true if I wasn’t lying to her because I’m currently on an undercover mission for the US Coast Guard. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I’m supposed to just stand by and let those modern day pirates try to raid the yacht. That’s why I’m here. This chartered cruise ship is a potential target, and the passengers are just bait. Too bad I can’t see Brooke as just another passenger. Not anymore.

 Book 2:  Over a Barrel
There is nothing about the phrase being captured by pirates that sounds normal in this day and age. Unfortunately for me, that’s exactly what’s going on here. Add in a fierce storm, a sinking cruise ship, and we pretty much have the makings of a dramatic made for TV film. It’s true. We even have a drop dead gorgeous lady pirate named Jade who is the sexiest antihero I’ve ever seen. I know she’s not like the rest. She’s already saved my skin too many times for that. But Jade isn’t just an unusual pirate, she’s an unusual woman. And no matter how this whole adventure turns out, hers is the story I want to follow.

Book 3: Toe the Line
I thought I had everything under control when I went aboard the Inuit Cruiser to take charge after the storm put the ship on the rocks. But about the time I start handing out the orders and trying to put things to rights, out walks Grace Morgan and all of a sudden I am a bumbling eighteen year old once again. The woman is even more beautiful now than she was on the day we divorced. The sexual tension is so thick it’s practically suffocating, and even my men are starting to notice. But Grace has changed. And the more we try to unravel this whole pirate plot to hold her and her son for ransom, the more I realize I’m going do to anything I can to keep her safe.

 Book 4: Loose Cannon
I’ve always done my duty for the Coast Guard. That’s why I’m a Chief Petty Officer. But right now I feel like our whole unit is off course and headed nowhere fast. My task? I’m supposed to watch the former head of security for the cruise ship because my commanding officer has put her in jail. The thing is, I just don’t think this is where Liane belongs. And it has nothing to do with how gorgeous she is. Well mostly nothing. People don’t see Liane the way they should. She’s tough as nails and she’s hiding some things that I think will shock us all. But without trust I’ll never learn those secrets until it’s too late.

 Book 5: Hand Over Fist
Miranda Cray has never done anything to deserve the bad reputation that seems to follow her like lint. The girl lost her father while at sea during a storm. I think everyone is entitled to a little bit of crazy after that happens. But the thing with Miranda is, she’s not the kind of woman to get knocked down without getting right back up again. That’s what I respect about her. When these pirate jerks find some new way to bend the law, Miranda is the first person to come up with a way to get in their faces and make the charges stick. She’s brave. She’s pretty as hell. And I’m almost certain that I’m in love with her. The problem is, I’m not the kind of guy that does long term relationships that that’s what Miranda deserves.

The aircraft was hit by enemy gunfire and suffered continual loss of altitude as it struggled to return to base. In thick cloud over a vast expanse of barren desert the aircraft hit a rock outcrop and disintegrated. Bill came to lying alone on a precipitous ledge and soon realized that he was the sole survivor. If he was to live he had to find help.To walk in temperatures of over 100 degrees proved impossible, so he trudged over seemingly endless dunes at dusk and dawn, his energy gradually fading. On the point of near collapse he found what he thought was a small cave in which to shelter from the searing sun. His luck now changed as he realized that his shelter was in fact an abandoned German reconnaissance truck. He found water and a little food, but no radio. He gradually resigned himself to death as he was incapable of moving any further, but then with a last desperate inspiration he realized that it may be possible to attract attention by heliograph. He found enough equipment in the truck and rigged a mast with the mirror at the top and commenced signaling and was eventually rescued by a Long Range Desert Patrol. After recuperation he rejoined his squadron and was given a new crew with whom he completed his tour. He was then sent to Malta where much to his amazement he was made ground controller of a satellite fighter airfield. He eventually was repatriated to the UK suffering with Malaria.
