Titanic
Filson Young - 1912
Despite the haste, it remains one of the most well-written and stylish of the early works. Its author, Filson Young, was a respected journalist who had already used his columns in the London Saturday Review and the Pall Mall Gazette to call for better safety at sea, and for all ships to have properly-manned radios. Having sailed the Atlantic himself, and knowing several of the passengers on board the doomed liner, his book combines an imaginative telling of the first few days on board, with a powerful account of the sinking based on early survivor interviews. In 1932 the BBC asked Filson to dramatise the book for radio, but a public outcry forced them to reconsider: even after twenty years, his recreation of the sinking was still too painful for many of their audience.
The Secret Meaning of Things: Poetry
Lawrence Ferlinghetti - 1967
But it goes much further: there is a deepening of vision and a darker understanding of "our clay condition." The six long poems in The Secret Meaning of Things show a progressive continuity and clarity of perception that apprehends both the hard reality and luminous irreality in everyday phenomena. In "Assassination Raga"––on the death of Robert Kennedy––the glass through which the poet sees darkly is the television screen; the poem was first read on the night of RFK’s funeral at a mass memorial in San Francisco. "Bickford’s Buddha" is a meditation on "Observation Fever" in Harvard Square, while "All Too Clearly" finds a "touch of old surrealism/at a stoplight in La Jolla." "Through the Looking Glass" begins with an actual flight aboard a commercial airliner and moves through a psychedelic vision to a final flash of the Dance of Shiva, which in turn opens out into the worldview of "After the Cries of Birds." "Moscow in the Wilderness, Segovia in the Snow" comes out of Ferlinghetti’s travels to Moscow and across the steppes in the winter of 1967.

The Letters of Shirley Jackson
Shirley Jackson - 2021
This extraordinary compilation of personal correspondence has all the hallmarks of Jackson's beloved fiction: flashes of the uncanny in the domestic, sparks of horror in the quotidian, and the veins of humor that run through good times and bad."I am having a fine time doing a novel with my left hand and a long story—with as many levels as Grand Central Station—with my right hand, stirring chocolate pudding with a spoon held in my teeth, and tuning the television with both feet."Written over the course of nearly three decades, from Jackson's college years to six days before her early death at the age of forty-eight, these letters become the autobiography Shirley Jackson never wrote. As well as being a bestselling author, Jackson spent much of her adult life as a mother of four in Vermont, and the landscape here is often the everyday: raucous holidays and trips to the dentist, overdue taxes and frayed lines of Christmas lights, new dogs and new babies. But in recounting these events to family, friends, and colleagues, she turns them into remarkable stories: entertaining, revealing, and wise. At the same time, many of these letters provide fresh insight into the genesis and progress of Jackson's writing over nearly three decades."The novel is getting sadder. It's always such a strange feeling—I know something's going to happen, and those poor people in the book don't; they just go blithely on their ways."Compiled and edited by her elder son, Laurence Jackson Hyman, in consultation with Jackson scholar Bernice M. Murphy and featuring Jackson's own witty line drawings, this intimate collection holds the beguiling prism of Shirley Jackson—writer and reader, mother and daughter, neighbor and wife—up to the light.

Footsteps of the Messiah
Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum - 1982
Those who play it down usually avoid assigning specific meaning to prophetic texts. Those who play it up often assign too much. But the prophetic portions of the Bible won't go away. The biblical interpreter must interact with them and in the detail and specificity in which they were written. Dr. Fruchtenbaum has done that, seeking always to try to understand the full meaning of the biblical revelation. The author's consideration of the biblical material is thorough and thought-provoking...those who read this book cannot help but be instructed and stimulated by his work.
