Begging (Invisible Child)

The story starts in Edmonton, London. It is the story of heartbreak and neglect in the relentless struggle for food amidst the filth of poverty. What is it like for a small girl to starve? When she needs help, she is abandoned and left to struggle alone.

Till Death Do Us Part

J.J. Slate - 2015
Spousal murder is never acceptable, but newlywed murder seems to be on a completely different level. It is unconscionable to think someone could stand in front of his family and friends, pledging to honor and cherish another person for the rest of his life, and then kill his spouse in cold blood just months, weeks, or even days later. It happens more than you'd think--and, contrary to popular belief, it's not always the husband who acts as the aggressor. In her third true crime book, bestselling author JJ Slate examines more than twenty true stories of newlywed murders, delving into the past of the victims and aggressors, searching for answers to the question everyone is asking: How does this sort of thing happen? These shocking cases of betrayal and murder might just make you think differently about those five sacred words, "till death do us part."

The Fog Seller

Don Daglow - 2015
It's not cozy but it's intimate. It's not procedural but it will make you think, which is why it's been honored both as a mystery and as literary fiction. Its influences range from Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep to the Coen Brothers' The Big Lebowski to J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. "Compelling, mysterious, tender and moving... The Fog Seller will charm the mind and warm the heart." --IndieReader, March, 2017. "The intricate plot is ingeniously executed so that all pieces of the puzzle fit together in the end. Twists and turns that at first appear questionable end up working perfectly... The prose is top notch... The book's distinctively original structure moves the story along briskly. Even what seems like extraneous material contributes to the backbone of the novel..." -- The BookLife Prize (Publishers Weekly), September, 2017Assassinated: The crusading politician who saved hundreds of San Francisco homes from the bulldozers of a big developer. The author's web of story is deftly woven, unveiling the protagonist's hidden depths along with the mystery, while a host of quirky, lively, vivid minor characters add color to the scene. Junior Ghost Hunters - Case of the Chadwick Ghost

Sam Grasdin - 2014
are there any ghosts here?" HAVE YOU EVER wondered why no one that claims to have seen a ghost ever has any evidence of it? You know – some pictures or a video from their cellphone? It's the same with UFO's. There are all these blurry pictures of weird objects in the sky that could be an alien space ship or it could be a toaster. It's tough to tell. I'm Nathaniel Parker and I think about these things. A lot. I asked my dad once why he thought there wasn't any clear pictures of ghosts. You know what he said? “Maybe ghosts are just blurry, Natty.” My dad said. Then, he cracked up like he'd said the funniest thing ever. That's my dad, a real comedian. My friends call me Nate. I'm 12 years old and I'm kind of a nerd. I mean, I like science and stuff, and I read a lot of comic books. If you read comic books, you know why science is so cool. Most of the superheroes out there got to be super thanks to science. Take Spiderman for instance. He got bit by this genetically altered spider and woke up with spider powers. How cool would that be? Anyway, the point that I was trying to make about ghosts is, that the reason that no one has been able to capture any really good images yet is because the only people who see them are a group of kids going into a haunted house on a dare. They are probably trying to take a picture while they are running away and screaming. That got me thinking about what I would do if I saw a ghost. I’d like to think that I’d walk right up and try to shake its hand but I guess I won't know the answer until I actually see one. But that could be sooner than you think..... Michael Connelly CD Collection 3: The Poet / Blood Work

Michael Connelly - 2011
As the novel opens, Jack's twin brother, a Denver homicide detective, has just killed himself. Or so it seems. But when Jack begins to investigate the phenomenon of police suicides, a disturbing pattern emerges, and soon suspects that a serial murderer is at work - a devious cop killer who's left a coast-to-coast trail of "suicide notes" drawn from the poems of Edgar Allan Poe. It's the story of a lifetime - except that "the Poet" already seems to know that Jack is trailing him. . . Here is definitive proof that Michael Connelly is among the best suspense novelists working today. Blood Work: Thanks to a heart transplant, former FBI agent Terrell McCaleb is enjoying a quiet retirement, renovating the fishing boat he lives on in Los Angeles Harbor. But McCaleb's calm seas turn choppy when a story in the "What Happened To?" column of the LA Times brings him face-to-face with the sister of the woman whose heart now beats in his chest. From her, McCaleb learns a terrible truth: that the donor of his heart was not killed in an accident, as he'd been told, but was murdered. Wracked with guilt over the fact that he's alive because another human being was killed, McCaleb embarks on a private investigation of his donor's murder - a crime as horrific as anything he ever encountered as a serial killer investigator for the FBI.
