Inferno: by Dan Brown -- Review
Expert Book Reviews - 2014
Langdon faces a scientist bent on destruction: a scientist who finds inspiration in Dante Alighieri's Inferno. Langdon awakes in a Venice hospital with no memory of how he got there. He has little time to collect his thoughts or make sense of the visions that tell him to "seek and find" before an assassin arrives. Langdon must set off to put the pieces together. This comprehensive review gives you a complete overview of the plot, key characters, and the author's writing style, both good and bad. Inferno navigates topics such as human overpopulation and social responsibility while Langdon tries to make sense of his visions and come to terms with the feeling that he is the only person who can save the world. In this review, you'll also find critical opinions of the novel as well as an evaluation of the novel's high and low points. Fans of Dan Brown won't be disappointed by this offering, as it has all the trappings of his previous works. Conversely, while the action will keep readers turning pages, some may find his prose weak, as his storytelling relies heavily on his common tropes. Nevertheless, Brown's fourth Robert Langdon novel has plenty to offer.

Four Novels of the 1970s: Fifty-Two Pickup / Swag / Unknown Man No. 89 / The Switch
Elmore Leonard - 2014
His genius for scene and dialogue led Time magazine to describe him as “a Dickens of Detroit,” and Newsweek called him “the best American writer of crime alive, possibly the best we’ve ever had.” Now The Library of America inaugurates a three-volume edition of Leonard’s greatest work, prepared in consultation with the author shortly before his death and edited by his long-time researcher Gregg Sutter.Leonard began his career in the 1950s as a writer of pulp westerns, but switched genres at the end of the 1960s and slowly but steadily achieved recognition as a fantastically inventive storyteller and a one-of-a-kind stylist. For all the dazzling complications of his plots—often involving brilliantly elaborate scams, of which he was a master—it was the people who mattered most in his books, people from every walk of life and every social byway. The four novels collected in this first volume re-invented the American crime novel and cemented Leonard’s reputation. All are set in his hometown Detroit, a hard-working “shot and a beer” kind of place whose lawless underside becomes a stage for an unforgettable cast of rogues, con artists, and psychopaths. Fifty-Two Pickup (1974), fast and sharply written, is an insidiously brutal book about an adulterous businessman who runs afoul of a crew of murderous blackmailers. Swag (1976) finds Leonard moving for the first time into the more comic mode that would become his signature, as he charts the small-time criminal careers of an amiable ex-con and an ambitious car salesman who share a bachelor pad and pursue their hedonistic dream of the good life through a string of armed robberies. Unknown Man No. 89 (1977) spins a complex web of crisscrossing rip-offs and con games, with process server Jack Ryan, a typically laid-back Leonard protagonist, caught in the middle. In The Switch (1978), one of Leonard’s funniest books, Mickey Dawson, a discontented housewife held for ransom, manages to turn the tables on her kidnappers while exacting overdue revenge on her scheming husband. This volume also contains a newly researched chronology of Elmore Leonard’s life, drawing on materials in his personal archive, and detailed annotations, which include as a special bonus a scene from the typescript for Swag that did not appear in the published book.

In 1927 he retired from the world of finance and, with the proceeds, left for Paris to write serious fiction. Before turning to detective fiction, he wrote three novels that received favorable reviews, but it was writing detective fiction, and as creator of the Nero Wolfe character, that he become famous as a writer. The first Nero Wolfe novel, Fer-de-Lance, appeared In 1934. It was followed by many others, which established Nero Wolfe on a par with Erle Stanley Gardner’s famous Perry Mason. "Cordially invited to Meet Murder," published originally in "The American Magazine" in 1942, is also known as "Invitation to Murder," but should not be confused with a novella by the same name that appeared in the same magazine in 1953. This is a leasurly-paced story in the Christie tradition, featuring an American version of the English Manorhouse setting with an unusual household.
Blackstone and the Burning Secret (Inspector Sam Blackstone #4)
Sally Spencer - 2014
If the arsonist’s true purpose is to make the government hand over one hundred thousand pounds, why does he seem so reluctant to apply the necessary pressure? And why firebomb a single sloop, when it would have been just as easy to destroy the whole fleet? In order to answer these questions, Blackstone—aided by Dr Ellie Carr, a passionate disciple of the new science of criminal pathology—must follow a trail of death and destruction. The Incident: Season One - A Sam Jameson Espionage and Suspense Thriller, Episodes 1-4
Lars Emmerich - 2014
People are trying to kill her. That would be business as usual in the counterespionage world, except that it’s the good guys who have her in the crosshairs. Why are the DC Metro police trying to kidnap her? Do her bosses at Homeland want her in a body bag, too? And why does everyone she talks to seem to end up in the morgue? Will a ruthless mercenary, a hapless American traitor, and a dead man’s cryptic clue hold the key to Sam’s survival? As the noose tightens around her neck, Sam must uncover a brutal and deadly conspiracy before she becomes its next victim. Interview with author Lars Emmerich Q - So, what makes the Special Agent Sam Jameson series special? A - It's a mix of things, really. When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My top picks are usually espionage and private detective novels, any of the thousands of thrillers and mysteries best sellers, and, of course, books featuring classic pulp heroes. I also like heroes with problems and villains who are frighteningly human, maybe a little too much like us. The Sam Jameson books are a mix of these genres. The series focuses on the mystery and thriller / espionage genre overall, with a couple of themes borrowed from financial thrillers thrown in for good measure, a healthy dose of the stuff that makes political thrillers great, and a serial killer novel or two to keep things interesting. Why such a mixing of themes? Because life isn't monolithic and book genres are arbitrary. There's murder in spy novels and there's espionage in political conspiracy thrillers. Overall, the Sam Jameson series is designed to keep you turning the pages. I've done my best to make sure there's never a dull moment, and I think Sam's chutzpah and attitude makes for good entertainment. But I'm probably a little biased. Q - What order should I read the books in? A - I’ve written the series so you can read the books in any order, and all the story threads will tie up nicely by the time you're finished. The Incident is a standalone story, and it occurs before the Devolution series. If you do want to read them in order, I'd suggest the following sequence: - The Incident Season 1 - The Incident Season 2 - Devolution - Meltdown - Mindscrew - Balls Deep (A Peter Kittredge espionage and suspense thriller) Q - So, why should readers give these books a try? A - Because the Sam Jameson series is a fast, fun thrill-ride that never lets up! Each of the books has hit the top ten bestsellers list on Kindle for Women Sleuths, and each have been featured on Amazon's Thrillers 100 Must Reads list - which is no mean feat. Ultimately, readers who enjoy a blazing pace, characters with depth and distinctive voices, and a plot that twists and turns all the way to the end will enjoy this series.

Ripped in Two
A.J. Kohler - 2014
Sometimes, though, it's easier to think outside the box when you don't start inside it, and it's not like he doesn't have some involvement with these murders already. Jeff's not bad to look at either, and he's willing to settle for just going to lunch from time to time. That works for her. Then again, as many times as he's been involved with the murders, maybe he's the killer himself. Or maybe not. Of course, life would be so much easier if the star local TV crime scene reporter didn't insist on putting her front and center all the time and sneering at the fruitless efforts of both the Tucson Police and Pima County Sheriff's Departments. One way or another, Reesa won't rest until the killer is brought in. Better if he's a stranger, but if it's this private eye who's working to be her friend, so be it. Whoever it is will be going down. Bet on it.

LETHAL LADIES: A Lawrence De Maria Mystery and Thriller Omnibus
St. Austin's Press - 2014
But they have one thing in common. They spend a lot of time in the company of very dangerous women. In SIREN’S TEARS, the death of a spider monkey in a South American rain forest is the prelude to a series of apparently unsolvable human murders in Canada and the United States. Only when private investigator Alton Rhode is approached by an elderly Catholic priest – who may know more than he reveals – does the killer have anything to worry about. Nagged by doubts about the priest's story, but urged on by an unlikely underworld ally, Rhode starts to piece together the mystery. His hunt for the truth spans thousands of miles and makes him a target of a diabolical killer using sex and science to seek a perverted revenge on men. In KILLERFEST, one author has been already been murdered for allegedly insulting Islam. Now, Sebastian Quimper, the world’s most popular thriller novelist, is apparently the next target. Jake Scarne is asked to protect Quimper during one of the publishing industry’s premier showcases. More than a thousand authors, agents, publishers and literary groupies are scheduled to attend the annual conference in New York. It will be a security nightmare, since Quimper is the honoree and featured speaker. Nothing is as it seems, as Scarne is confronted with a diabolical madman and a beautiful but deadly woman assassin in a twisty tale that features exotic locations (London, India, Belgium and Tuscany, to name a few). ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lawrence De Maria is a Pulitzer-nominated journalist who cut his teeth on financial corruption at The New York Times and Forbes. His other thrillers and mysteries in the ALTON RHODE and JAKE SCARNE series do not have to be read in order, but he believes to do so will enhance the reader’s experience. ALTON RHODE MYSTERIES (in order): Capriati’s Blood Laura Lee Siren’s Tears Sister Gunner JAKE SCARNE THRILLERS (in order): Sound of Blood Madman’s Thirst Killerfest The Viron Conspiracy A tenth thriller, HURRICANE FATS, features CIA agent/assassin COLE SUDDEN. It is likely we haven’t heard the last of SUDDEN. CRITICAL ACCLAIM According to John Crudele of the New York Post, Alton Rhode has "a touch of Bourne, a dash of Bond and a sprig of Spenser." “While De Maria may have been an award-winning financial reporter, he's an awfully good fiction writer as well.” (THE NAPLES DAILY NEWS) “What is really almost beyond belief is how easily De Maria has transitioned from the dry world of financial reporting to the wild and lavish world of novel writing.” (THE COLLIER CITIZEN) De Maria is “a master of thriller dialogue.” (THE WASHINGTON INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF BOOKS)

Study in Terror: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Revolutionary Stories of Fear and the Supernatural Volume 2
Derrick Belanger - 2014
Those who do know the name Arthur Conan Doyle tend to know him only as the inventor of the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. A smaller segment of this group goes further and remembers Doyle as the inventor of the great detective who squandered his fame with crackpot beliefs in faeries and the supernatural. Sadly, there is so much more to the man who revolutionized the writing not just of detective fiction but also of the genre of horror, the supernatural, and even influenced history itself. This two volume anthology's point is to put Doyle back on the pedestal he so rightly deserves. Its aim is twofold. First, to introduce readers to Doyle's lesser known (yet no less important) works. These works speak for themselves in showing a master writer at his craft. The stories are timeless, enjoyable, and hopefully will lead to new fans embracing a great author's somewhat forgotten tales. The second aim is to show the relevance of Doyle's works. Through a collection of articles written by current scholars and experts, readers can see just how revolutionary Doyle's writings remain even today.
