All is uneventful until they meet Scarface Claw, the toughest tom in town, and run for home. The story is told by a brilliant, cumulative rhyming text and terrific pictures.

    After asking several passing trains for help over the hill, a little blue train agrees to help the stranded toys. Even though she is small, the blue train tries her best to bring the toys to the children on the other side of the hill.

    The Black Death has arrived. Fatima loses her parents to the plague. She's wandering in the forest alone and doesn't know where to go for comfort. In her desperation and in the cold at night, she dreams of a pink unicorn that can save her from fear and starvation. When she wakes she sees the carriage of the princess passing by. It has a pink unicorn design on it. Fatima pursues the carriage, meets the princess, and her life is forever changed as she learns the true meaning of the pink unicorn.     Not much really happens in these stories. The illustrations are beautiful but rather small. The eponymous friends carry on their friendship through mild misunderstandings and misadventures, always ready to forgive each other and forget. These gentle stories are among my favorite kids' books. I have fond memories of Frog and Toad from my childhood, and I never tire of re-reading them to my 4-year-old daughter. She seems to like them, too.

    Spot, a polka-dot leopard who can change colors and even juggle his own spots, tries to convince two children that he is special enough to be exhibited in the zoo.

    But he must first learn from his mother all the important things a little rabbit needs to know. Most importantly, he must learn how to watch out for foxes. When a fox suddenly appears, Little Cottontail quickly discovers that he has learned all his lessons well.

    The nicely balanced text (not too much, not too little) captures all the best moments and sets the stage for Alison Jay's richly imagined art. Sharp-eyed readers will notice tiny details playing out thrillingly over the course of the story (keep an eye on the gifts under the Christmas tree!).
