Realm of Juxtan

Tricia Owens
First are the mages, who have undergone training to learn to use ritual and Casts to form magick. Would-be mages are apprenticed to older, wiser mages and spend several years learning their craft. All mages in Juxtan are closely monitored by a small group of men known as the Elders. The Elders oversee the use of magick in the land to ensure that it is not abused.Another group of magick-users are the sorcerors, members of an exclusive, secretive clan known as the Order of the White Shard lead by a man named Gavedon ni Leyanon. Sorcerors forego the rituals and formulas used by mages and use magick in its rawest form - pulled directly from Life's energy. Sorcerors are considered dangerous because of their occasional inability to control the extreme power they access. The Elders hope to one day disband the Order and prohibit sorcerous use in Juxtan.~~~~~One day, Gavedon decides to engage in an act of magick that is expressly forbidden by the Elders - scrying. Gavedon employs the skills of one of his members to look into the future and there learns that a mercenary from Rhiad will one day kill him. Determined to prevent this from occuring, Gavedon dispatches his only son, Hadrian, to Rhiad to gather every mercenary in town together. Once the mercenaries are in place, Gavedon and Hadrian proceed to murder every one of them. However, one mercenary, Caledon, who fell in love with Hadrian while the young sorceror was in the city, lives through the destruction and vows revenge upon his lover and his lover's father. Dedicating his life to ending theirs, Caled, newly-named "Gavedon's Bane", begins the trip to Shard's Point Isle to confront the sorcerors. The Elders have by this time decided that Gavedon has gone too far. Intent on bringing him to justice, the Elders send one of their own - Manix of the heather - and his apprentice, Syellen, to find the sorceror and force him to answer for his crimes.En route, they encounter Caled, who insists upon hunting down the ni Leyanons, with or without the Elder's help, for his own anger-fueled reasons. Manix decides their chances are greater together so they form an unwitting group with a single goal; Gavedon's end.
