The Sixth Shotgun (Louis L'Amour)

Louis L'Amour - 2003
Collected here are two of his most exciting works, in their original forms. The title story, a tale of stagecoach robbery and frontier justice, is finally available in its full-length version. Similarly, the short novel included in this volume, "The Rider of the Ruby Hills," one of L'Amour's greatest range war novels, was published first in a magazine, then expanded by the author into a longer version years later. Here is a chance to experience the novel as it appeared in its debut, as L'Amour originally wrote it.

The Golden West

Louis L'Amour - 2003
These are the men who created the Western, shaped it, and perfected it. The Golden West collects three of their finest short novels. Max Brand's powerful Jargan is carefully restored to its original, full-length glory, with material never before seen. Tappan's Burro has long been considered one of Zane Grey's masterpieces, but only a shorter, edited version has been in print. The version included here was taken directly from Grey's actual manuscript. Louis L'Amour's The Trail to Crazy Man was rewritten years later as Crossfire Trail, which became the basis for the movie of the same name. Presented here is L'Amour's original version. These authors are the stuff of Western legend, and at last you can read their finest work as they themselves intended.

Sam manages to save Tom at the last harrowing minute, but now he is in the grasp of the brutal Yaquis, and trying to survive the most horrendous trek imaginable to get out of the Mexican desert. This book was co-authored with Clint Walker, of "Cheyenne" fame, one of the most popular Western series of its day. If you are after a book that is clean, has little profanity and is minimal on the violence, then this is the book for you. But there is no scrimping on the realism, and a more authentic Western is not written than the books penned by Kirby Jonas.
