An Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists

Wilhelm Ellenberger - 1949
So detailed and so accurate are these drawings that this book has long been a classic work of its kind. The animals are shown in three ways: external full views and dozens of details (paws, head, eyes, legs, etc.); beneath-the-skin drawings of musculature and of the positions and insertions of each muscle; and skeleton drawings of the bone structures that support and determine surface contours and configurations. In addition, special cross-sections dissect those portions of the animal — such as the head and limbs — that are most important to the artist. For this edition, Lewis S. Born of the American Museum of Natural History collected 25 plates from George Stubbs's Anatomy of the Horse, long unavailable; Straus-Durckheim's Anatomie Descriptive et Comparative du Chat; and Cuvier and Laurrillard's Anatomie Comparée. These plates, as fully annotated as the plates that make up the original book, supplement Ellenberger, Baum and Dittrich with anatomical drawings of the monkey, the bat, the flying squirrel, the rat kangaroo, the seal, and the hare. Mr. Lewis also provided a new preface and added to the annotated bibliography, which now contains 66 items.

Selected Poems of Victor Hugo: A Bilingual Edition

Victor Hugo - 1949
Despite his renown, however, there are few comprehensive collections of his verse available and even fewer translated editions.Translators E. H. and A. M. Blackmore have collected Victor Hugo's essential verse into a single, bilingual volume that showcases all the facets of Hugo's oeuvre, including intimate love poems, satires against the political establishment, serene meditations, religious verse, and narrative poems illustrating his mastery of the art of storytelling and his abiding concern for the social issues of his time. More than half of this volume's eight thousand lines of verse appear here for the first time in English, providing readers with a new perspective on each of the fascinating periods of Hugo's career and aspects of his style. Introductions to each section guide the reader through the stages of Hugo's writing, while notes on individual poems provide information not found in even the most detailed French-language editions.Illustrated with Hugo's own paintings and drawings, this lucid translation—available on the eve of Hugo's bicentenary—pays homage to this towering figure of nineteenth-century literature by capturing the energy of his poetry, the drama and satirical force of his language, and the visionary beauty of his writing as a whole.

The Wagner Operas

Ernest Newman - 1949
Acclaimed as the most complete and intellectually satisfying analysis of the Wagner operas, the book has met with unreserved enthusiasm from specialist and casual music lover alike. Here, available for the first time in a single paperback volume, is the perfect companion for listening to, or attending, The Flying Dutchman, Tannhuser, Lohengrin, Tristan and Isolde, Die Meistersinger, the four operas of the Ring Cycle, and Parsifal. Newman enriches his treatment of the stories, texts, and music of the operas with biographical and historical materials from the store of knowledge that he acquired while completing his numerous books on Wagner, including the magisterial Life of Richard Wagner. The text of The Wagner Operas is filled with hundreds of musical examples from the scores, and all the important leitmotifs and their interrelationships are made clear in Newman's lucid prose. This is as fine an introduction as any ever written about a major composer's masterpieces. Newman outlines with unfailing clarity and astuteness each opera's dramatic sources, and he takes the student through the completed opera, step by step, with all manner of incidental insight along the way.--Robert Bailey, New York University

The Human Nature of Playwriting

Samson Raphaelson - 1949
He recorded the experience in a book, "The Human Nature of Playwriting". The introduction expresses Raphaelson’s deep regard for language so visible in his writing: "This course does not aim directly to teach writing. Whether you write or not after you finish school means nothing to me as a teacher. In fact, I don’t think it is important from any viewpoint. But whether you live or not is important; and how you live. You may become businessmen or women, office workers, farmers, or wives, and as such you will be, whether you know it or not, deeply related to the culture of your age. That culture is largely expressed by creative writers through the written word. And if from this course you get a notion of how that written word comes into being, of the connection between a writer and his own life and between his life and all lives, then this course will be successful indeed.""The Human Nature of Playwriting" offers a "case history" method as a means of exploring human experience, and explains the means by which such experience may be adapted to the dramatists' craft.

The Prophecy of Daniel: A Commentary

Edward J. Young - 1949
It is ably designed to meet the needs of pastors, students, and all those seeking a better understanding of Scripture. The author presents a clear, positive exposition of prophecy coupled with an accurate explanation of historical fact based on research and the accumulated authority of other outstanding Biblical scholars. In addition, he endeavors to bring out the exact meaning of the Hebrew and Aramaic languages in the original translation accompanying the commentary. The reader will find adequate reference to the divergent interpretations of other scholars, with a thorough and erudite explanation of differences. Those unacquainted with the ancient languages can nevertheless read this volume with great profit. "A fresh and stimulating approach . . . . Thoroughly done . . . . A wholesome addition to the field of Old Testament study." - Review and Expositor "The author has made himself, in the space of a relatively few years, easily the foremost among conservative scholars of the Old Testament." - The Perkins School of Theology "Dr. Young makes it abundantly plain that the issue is not between good and bad, intelligent and obscurantist, scientific and unscientific scholarship... (but) between a believing scholarship and a skeptical and rationalistic scholarship." - Oswalt T. Allis Edward J. Young (1907-1968) was considered one of the ablest conservative scholars in the field of Old Testament, served for many years as Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Seminary, Philadelphia.

A Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Part Two: From Noah to Abraham
