On the Genealogy of Morals

Friedrich Nietzsche - 1887
Nietzsche rewrites the former as a history of cruelty, exposing the central values of the Judaeo-Christian and liberal traditions - compassion, equality, justice - as the product of a brutal process of conditioning designed to domesticate the animal vitality of earlier cultures. The result is a book which raises profoundly disquieting issues about the violence of both ethics and interpretation. Nietzsche questions moral certainties by showing that religion and science have no claim to absolute truth, before turning on his own arguments in order to call their very presuppositions into question. The Genealogy is the most sustained of Nietzsche's later works and offers one of the fullest expressions of his characteristic concerns. This edition places his ideas within the cultural context of his own time and stresses the relevance of his work for a contemporary audience.

Friedrich Nietzsche - 1887
Though they span the career of this controversial genius, both address the problems such as the conflict between the moral versus aesthetic approaches to life, the effect of Christianity on human values, the meaning of science, and the famous dichotomy between the Apollonian and Dionysian spirits, among many themes which Nietzsche struggled throughout his tortured life.

Jane Ellen Panton - 1887
'I do not think that young married people quite comprehend how much of their comfort depends upon the domestic arrangements.'In nineteenth-century England, securing an advantageous marriage was an almost universal concern - but what happened after the confetti had settled? This domestic handbook describes and advises how to avoid the perils awaiting couples setting up their home, from choosing a house and interior decoration to managing servants. At the time this was a best selling book; it encouraged popular interest in the nuances of domestic taste and economy; it now serves as a useful guide for those hoping to recreate Victorian decor, as well as giving a glimpse into an age when passions could be roused by wall-to-wall carpeting and a marriage destroyed by a husband's indigestion. This is a reproduction of the eighth edition.Contains index and illustrations.

The Autobiography of a Slander

Edna Lyall - 1887
O'Reilly's words were tumultuously heaving in the atmosphere when I sprang into being, a young but perfectly formed and most promising slander. A delicious odour of tea pervaded the drawing-room, it was orange-flower pekoe, and Mrs. O'Reilly was just handing one of the delicate Crown Derby cups to her visitor, Miss Lena Houghton.
