In Search of Christian Freedom

Raymond Franz - 1991
For those raised in a highly structured religious environment, balancing loyalties to a religious organisation, family, and personal conscience may raise difficult issues. Raymond Franz's first-hand account of the issues with which he struggled forms the theme of his first book, Crisis of Conscience. A third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Franz served for over 40 years at every level of the organisation's structure. He spent nine of those years as a member of the central executive council, the Governing Body. His experience gives him a unique perspective on the issues facing sincere Jehovah's Witnesses who may question their religious beliefs or the structure of their organisation. It also provides a rare look into the words, actions and attitudes of a small group of men who serve as administrators, legislators, and judges for Jehovah's Witnesses. Professor Stephen Cox, of the University of California: "In Search of Christian Freedom is one of the fullest and most perceptive accounts available of the life of a modern religious group. Never before, perhaps, has the relationship between religious belief and institutional practice been so closely examined. The author has at his command unparalleled sources of information on the religious organisation on which his study focuses; he also has a firm grasp of the problems of faith and freedom that have challenged Christianity since its beginning."

Twelfth House: The Hidden Power in the Horoscope

Karen Hamaker-Zondag - 1991
Called "the house of selfundoing" by the old astrologers, this house has signified sorrow, misfortune, illness, imprisonment and secret enmity. It does, however, mean much more than that. Karen HamakerZondag considers this house from the perspective of a Jungian psychologist, and shows the creative potential that can be tapped here if we choose to cooperate with it. The 12th house symbolizes the collective unconscious and nonrational ways of perceptionsuch as working with dreams. The effect of planets in the 12th house and how to work with them, they way in which the house reveals parental/ancestral inheritance, the working of fate and unconscious processes are all discussed in detail. The book offers a clear and intriguing interpretation of this difficult to understand house and will be of value to students at all levels, particularly those who want to combine psychological theory with astrological symbolism.

Alchemy Unveiled

Jan Baptiste van Helmont - 1991
Beyond that, another language is required, one which cannot be committed to paper. Most people confuse iatrochemistry with Alchemy. When an Alchemist speaks of Mercury, Sulphur and Salt, he speaks of his spiritual, astral and physical bodies, not of the elements. Alchemy Unveiled describes the tribulations that a human being has to pass through in order to purify these three bodies. However, to achieve the level of an Alchemist requires daily study and strict daily mental, astral and physical exercises for many lifetimes. Many individuals have already achieved this goal. The purpose is not to convert a lower metal into gold, but to change an impure body into a pure body, namely the spirit, soul and physical bodies. An Alchemist is one who has passed the levels of a magician, spheric magician and Kabbalist. All these levels can be achieved without the help of a teacher! . These Western writings are by those who have reached levels higher than an Alchemist. They have given us these writings, philosophically and practically. These sciences cannot be learned intellectually, but have to be approached with a clean heart. One's character has to be completely free of all negative characteristics. And for the one who embarks on this journey, the first thing to be learned is what a positive characteristic is and what a negative characteristic is. And the reader will be surprised what negative characteristics are, because many of these characteristics are considered by most as positive. Alchemy Unveiled will lead the reader on a journey of a complete purification of the body, soul and spirit, and for the first time the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone is openly explained. Much has been written about this subject, most of which is and remains incomprehensible for most. Many of the alchemical writings available were and are based on error and point the way to the wrong path. This is mainly due to the fact that many individuals do this for personal, material gain. Alchemy Unveiled begins with an explicit explanation of the symbolic language of Alchemy, which is a must for any further clear understanding of the entire text of this book. It explains the errors of many who were not in possession of the true knowledge regarding this art. It takes the reader on a journey through the ancient mysteries of Initiation, the Osiris mysteries, the Eleusian Mysteries, the Mysteries of Israel, the Christ-Mysterium and the Mystery of Alchemy.

The Lines of Nazca

Anthony F. Aveni - 1991
Etched across the landscape near the Nazca River are lines and lifelike drawings depicting monkeys, birds, fish and spiders. The pre-Incaic Nazca peoples who made these geoglyphs created them by removing masses of surface stones to expose the lighter soil beneath. Various theories, some absurd, some plausible, have been formulated which seek to explain the meaning and purpose of the Nazca lines. A current theory is that the lines or geoglypha might have functioned like the ceques of Cuzco (from the quechua "ray") which organized into structured social, geographic and political units. It may also be that some of the lines were astronomically oriented and that they were related to water, agriculture and mountains. After several years (1976-1984) of investigation, Dr. Anthony F. Aveni and his team of interdisciplinary researchers consisting of Dr. Gary Urton (anthropologist) of Colgate University, Dr. C. L. N. Ruggles (astronomer) of the University of Leicester, Dr. Persis Clarkson (archaeologist) of Athabaska University, Dr. Helaine Silverman (archaeologist) of the University of Illinois and a group of investigators from the Remote Sensing Laboratory of the University of Minnesota have assembled their results here for the first time. These include a complete description and statistical analysis of the Nazca features, the surface archaeology of the pampa and the nearby ceremonial center of Cahuachi, and the possible relationship between the lines and pan-Andean systems of social organization. A critical assessment of previous theories advanced about the lines rounds out this collection of joint research papers.

The Spiritual Guidance of the Individual and Humanity: Some Results of Spiritual-Scientific Research Into Human History and Development

Rudolf Steiner - 1991
It guides us as infants and children as we attain vertical balance in space, learn to communicate in community, and begin to think in the world. Through this initial wisdom (which is still connected to the spiritual hierarchies) we enter the physical realm and then, as we grow, we exchange it for self-awareness and memory.What--or who--is this wisdom? Steiner suggests that it is connected with the "higher self" of humankind that lived in Jesus between his baptism and the Crucifixion. Even if there were no Gospels to tell us of the Christ, we can know of it through human nature. Looking within ourselves and at human history, we are able to understand the spiritual guidance of humanity and human beings. Christ's sacrifice for humanity is only part of the cosmic, spiritual participation of beings of every level and kind in human evolution.Steiner's written works differ from his lectures in their directness, depth, and ramifications, and it was rare for him to take time from his busy schedule to rewrite any of his numerous lectures for publication. However, Steiner considered these lectures essential and important for our understanding of the foundations of spiritual science. This volume is a translation of Die geistige Fhrung des Menschen und der Menschheit (GA 15).
