The Journals of Lewis and Clark

Meriwether Lewis - 1905
Keenly aware that the course of the nation's destiny lay westward—and that a "Voyage of Discovery" would be necessary to determine the nature of the frontier—President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis to lead an expedition from the Missouri River to the northern Pacific coast and back. From 1804 to 1806, accompanied by co-captain William Clark, the Shoshone guide Sacajawea, and thirty-two men, Lewis mapped rivers, traced the principal waterways to the sea, and established the American claim to the territories of Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Together the captains kept this journal: a richly detailed record of the flora and fauna they sighted, the native tribes they encountered, and the awe-inspiring landscape they traversed, from their base camp near present-day St. Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River, that has become an incomparable contribution to the literature of exploration and the writing of natural history.

The Voyage Of The Discovery

Robert Falcon Scott - 1905
I had only to read a few pages to realise that it was literature, unique of its kind . . . Scott's mind was like wax to receive an impression and like marble to retain it'. So wrote Leonard Huxley, and he was not alone in his opinion. When this account of Scott's first Antarctic expedition appeared in 1905 the reviewers recognised it as a masterpiece and the first printing sold out immediately. Scott is best known for his doomed last expedition in 1912, but it was this earlier voyage that truly began the opening up of the Antarctic continent and laid the groundwork for the 'Heroic Age' of Antarctic exploration. The record of that voyage is a classic account by a remarkable explorer who was also one of the most talented writers in the field of polar exploration. Scott brings alive for the reader the brilliance of the aurora in the long winter nights, the hunger and danger of sledging trips, the isolation, and the joy of seeing what no human eye had previously seen.

Surf Science: An Introduction to Waves for Surfing

Tony Butt - 1905
An explanation of waves and how they are formed, in layman's terms.

The Little Midrash Says: Beraishis

R. Weissman - 1905
"The Little Midrash Says" series was created to facilitate the child's understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the weekly parshyos. The striking illustrations help the child visualize the scenes described in the text. Parents and educators are urged to regard the text merely as a springboard and guide, and to elaborate on it according to the individual child's needs. The weekly quizzes ("Are you a parsha expert?") and the "problem of the week" should stimulate a family-wide discussion of the weekly Torah portion.

Australian Sign Language: Auslan: An Introduction to Sign Language Linguistics

Trevor Johnston - 1905
Assuming no prior background in language study, it explores each key aspect of the structure of Auslan, providing an accessible overview of its grammar (how sentences are structured), phonology (the building blocks of signs), morphology (the structure of signs), lexicon (vocabulary), semantics (how meaning is created), and discourse (how Auslan is used in context). The authors also discuss a range of myths and misunderstandings about sign languages, provide an insight into the history and development of Auslan, and show how Auslan is related to other sign languages, such as those used in Britain, the USA and New Zealand. Complete with clear illustrations of the signs in use and useful further reading lists, this is an ideal resource for anyone interested in Auslan, as well as those seeking a clear, general introduction to sign language linguistics.

Arcana Coelestia, Vol 3

Emanuel Swedenborg - 1905
Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1870 edition. Excerpt: ... consequence of not reflecting upon it, is, that there is continually an influx of somewhat from within, which receives those things that thus enter and are insinuated from without, and arranges them in order; that which enters by influx, and which thus receives and arranges, is celestial Divine Good, which is from the Lord, hence the things received from without have their life, hence they have their order. and hence, as was said, they have their consanguinities and affinities with each other; from this it may appear, that man's rational principle is from celestial Divine Good as a father, according to what is said in this verse, 'She is the daughter of my father." In respect to the other arcanum, viz., that the rational principle is not conceived of spiritual truth as a mother, it may appear from what was said above, n. 1902; tor if spiritual truth, like celestial good, entered by influx from within, then man would be born to a complete and perfect rational principle, and at the same time to a complete and perfect scientific principle, so that he would have no occasion to learn any thing; but whereas the nature of man is such, that he is hereditarily in all evil, and consequently in every false principle, and thus that he would adulterate and profane essential truths, if they also entered by influx from within, and would thereby perish eternally, therefore it is provided of the Lord, that nothing of truth enters by influx through man's internal, but only through his external; hence it may appear that man's rational principle is not from spiritual truth as a mother, according to what is said in this verse, " Nevertheless she is not the daughter of my mother." According to like order it pleased the Lord that His rational principle also...

Brain-Machine Interface Engineering

Justin C. Sanchez - 1905
This book reveals the essential engineering principles and signal processing tools for deriving control commands from bioelectric signals in large ensembles of neurons. The topics featured include analysis techniques for determining neural representation, modeling in motor systems, computing with neural spikes, and hardware implementation of neural interfaces. Beginning with an exploration of the historical developments that have led to the decoding of information from neural interfaces, this book compares the theory and performance of new neural engineering approaches for BMIs.
