Revelation: A Shorter Commentary

G.K. Beale - 2014
    K. Beale's monumental New International Greek Testament Commentary volume on Revelation has been highly praised since its publication in 1999. This shorter commentary distills the superb grammatical analysis and exegesis from that tome (over 1,300 pages) into a book more accessible and pertinent to preachers, students, and general Christian readers. As in the original commentary, Beale views Revelation as an integrated whole, as a conscious continuation of the Old Testament prophetic books, and shows that recognizing Revelation's nearly constant use of Old Testament allusions is key to unlocking its meaning. Interspersed throughout the volume are more than sixty sets of Suggestions for Reflection to help readers better grasp the relevance of Revelation to their lives and our world today."

Reading Backwards: Figural Christology and the Fourfold Gospel Witness

Richard B. Hays - 2014
Hays maps the shocking ways the four Gospel writers interpreted Israel's Scripture to craft their literary witnesses to the Church's one Christ. The Gospels' scriptural imagination discovered inside the long tradition of a resilient Jewish monotheism a novel and revolutionary Christology.Modernity's incredulity toward the Christian faith partly rests upon the characterization of early Christian preaching as a tendentious misreading of the Hebrew Scriptures. Christianity, modernity claims, twisted the Bible they inherited to fit its message about a mythological divine Savior. The Gospels, for many modern critics, are thus more about Christian doctrine in the second and third century than they are about Jesus in the first.Such Christian misreadings are not late or politically motivated developments within Christian thought. As Hays demonstrates, the claim that the events of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection took place according to the Scriptures stands at the very heart of the New Testament's earliest message. All four canonical Gospels declare that the Torah and the Prophets and the Psalms mysteriously prefigure Jesus. The author of the Fourth Gospel puts the claim succinctly: If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me (John 5:46).Hays thus traces the reading strategies the Gospel writers employ to read backwards and to discover how the Old Testament figuratively discloses the astonishing paradoxical truth about Jesus' identity. Attention to Jewish and Old Testament roots of the Gospel narratives reveals that each of the four Evangelists, in their diverse portrayals, identify Jesus as the embodiment of the God of Israel. Hays also explores the hermeneutical challenges posed by attempting to follow the Evangelists as readers of Israel's Scripture--can the Evangelists teach us to read backwards along with them and to discern the same mystery they discovered in Israel's story? In Reading Backwards Hays demonstrates that it was Israel's Scripture itself that taught the Gospel writers how to understand Jesus as the embodied presence of God, that this conversion of imagination occurred early in the development of Christian theology, and that the Gospel writers' revisionary figural readings of their Bible stand at the very center of Christianity.--Joel B. Green, Dean of the School of Theology and Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Fuller Theological Seminary "First Things"

Hidden But Now Revealed: A Biblical Theology of Mystery

G.K. Beale - 2014
If his true deity, his death and resurrection and his role in the establishment of God's eternal kingdom were predicted in the Old Testament and in his own teachings, how could the leading biblical scholars of their time miss it?This book explores the biblical conception of mystery as an initial, partially hidden revelation that is subsequently more fully revealed, shedding light not only on the richness of the concept itself, but also on the broader relationship between the Old and New Testaments. Exploring all the occurrences of the term mystery in the New Testament and the topics found in conjunction with them, this work unpacks how the New Testament writers understood the issue of continuity and discontinuity. This investigation of the notion of mystery sharpens our understanding of how the Old Testament relates to the New and explores topics such as kingdom, crucifixion, the relationship between Jews and Gentiles and more. As such, it is a model for attentive and faithful biblical theology intended for students, scholars, pastors and lay people who wish to seriously engage the Scriptures.

Framing Paul: An Epistolary Biography

Douglas A. Campbell - 2014
But the answers given to these questions are often derived in dubious ways.In Framing Paul Douglas Campbell reappraises all these issues in rigorous fashion, appealing only to Paul’s own epistolary data in order to derive a basic “frame” for the letters on which all subsequent interpretation can be built. Though figuring out the authorship and order of Paul’s letters has been thought to be impossible, Campbell’s Framing Paul presents a cogent solution to the puzzle.

An Interpretive Lexicon of New Testament Greek: Analysis of Prepositions, Adverbs, Particles, Relative Pronouns, and Conjunctions

G.K. Beale - 2014
This Lexicon has a very specific and important purpose: to make the process of New Testament interpretation easier and more accurate by providing a comprehensive yet concise interpretation of Greek words that determine logical relationships between statements or clauses. These words (prepositions, adverbs, particles, relative pronouns, conjunctions and other connectors) are essential to revealing and supporting the main ideas in the text and are especially useful for interpreting logical arguments, such as those found in the epistles. While not exhaustive, this Interpretive Lexicon lists the vast majority of Greek connecting words, especially those that are notorious for being some of the most difficult words to translate.Features include:Concise definitions for quick analysis.Examples of where the word is found in Scripture.Page references to several major lexical resources for further translation options and nuances.Interpretation of the broader categories of each word (for example: locative (in, among, on), means-end (with, by), grounds (because, on account of), temporal (while, at), and so on.The interpretive feature of the book--evaluating the word's function in discourse--is tremendously helpful for the exegetical process, allowing the translator to closely follow the logical flow of the text with greater efficiency. This Interpretive Lexicon is a valuable handbook for student, pastor, and scholar alike.

Beyond Old and New Perspectives on Paul: Reflections on the Work of Douglas Campbell

Chris Tilling - 2014
And Douglas Campbell's groundbreaking publications are an important contribution to future discussions relating to Paul. Familiar problems relating to justification, "old" and "new" perspectives, and much more besides, have been tackled in fresh and exciting ways, setting down challenge after challenge to all those involved in Pauline studies. Campbell's publications therefore demand serious engagement. This book seeks to facilitate academic engagement with Campbell's work in a unique way. It contains numerous chapters critiquing his proposals, while others summarize the key themes succinctly. But it also contains Campbell's own response to the reception of his work, allowing him space to outline how his thinking has developed. In so doing, this work allows readers to be drawn into a vitally important conversation. It is academic theology in the making and constitutes the cutting edge of Pauline studies. "Campbell's work is undoubtedly one of the most important 'game-changing' contributions to New Testament scholarship in recent times. But as these excellent essays show clearly, its significance extends far beyond the biblical guild, for Campbell is provoking us to rethink some of the most profound and far-reaching issues facing the church today. He deserves to be far more widely known, and this collection will doubtless further that end." --Jeremy Begbie, Duke University, North Carolina "Douglas Campbell . . . has generated a conversation that crosses all theological disciplines--exegetical, historical, systematic, ethical/political. That conversation, on full and brilliant display here, is contending for nothing less than the gospel of Jesus Christ. The issues matter profoundly. These essays, by Campbell and by those who would support, correct, and criticize his work, also matter. No arcane Paul scholarship here . . . essential reading for every theologian." --Douglas Harink, The King's University College, Canada "Douglas Campbell is a force to be reckoned with in Pauline studies. His work can be delightfully illuminating, horribly confusing, and absolutely frustrating--sometimes all in the same paragraph. These insightful essays by some of Campbell's supporters and critics, as well as by Campbell himself, will help readers better engage Campbell and, I think, also Paul." --Michael J. Gorman, St. Mary's Seminary & University, Maryland "Douglas Campbell's groundbreaking interpretation of Paul deserves a wide audience and continuing discussion, and this book is an exemplary model of gracious, critical, and appreciative conversation on matters of crucial importance to all who care about the Apostle Paul's liberating good news." --Susan Eastman, Duke Divinity School, North Carolina Chris Tilling is Lecturer in New Testament Studies at St Mellitus College, London, and visiting Lecturer in Theology at King's College London. He is the author of Paul's Divine Christology (2012).

Holistic Spirituality: Lifegiving Wisdom from the Letter of James (Topical Line Drives)

Bruce G. Epperly - 2014
It's often considered not as theologically serious as the writings of Paul, nor as gracious as the gospels. For some it's too works-oriented, for others just a bit obscure. Some have even questioned whether it is truly a Christian book. Let's face it. You're much more likely to see a seminary course on Romans or Galatians than on James, or to hear a sermon, for that matter! Bruce Epperly doesn't agree with that perspective. Not only does he think James has something important to say about the way we live as 21st century Christians, just as it did for 1st century Christians, but he also doesn't think James is in opposition to Paul. He suspects the two apostles would have had no difficulty with each other's theology. In this third volume of the Topical Line Drives series, he aims to direct readers to the important message of this little book for contemporary Christians. He provides a fresh orientation and focus to understanding the message. Once you've read his thoughts you'll likely never read James in the same way again. Certainly, you won't dismiss it.

UBS 5th Revised Edition - Greek New Testament: With Greek-English Dictionary Red Hardcover

German Bible Society - 2014
Changes include 1) The readings of the newly discovered Papyri 117 127 have been incorporated into this edition, thereby opening up interesting perspectives particularly for Acts of the Apostles. Besides, it is now displayed in the apparatus, where selected modern Bible translations (English, German, French, Spanish) are based on a variant reading rather than the principal version of the text. 2) A special focus of the revision was on the Catholic Epistles, in which the edition has been made consistent with the Second Edition of the Editio Critica Maior and the 28th Edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece. This has led to more than 30 modifications in the reading text and resulted in a new selection of witnesses for the textual apparatus, in addition to modifications of the selection of apparatus units. 3) The Discourse Segmentation Apparatus has also undergone thorough revision. 4) Finally, the UBS 5 edition was typeset with a new, aesthetically appealing and readily legible Greek font.

The Hinge in Romans 1 -- 8: A critique of N.T.Wright’s view of Baptism and Conversion

David H.J. Gay - 2014
Consequently, if we want to fully appreciate the gospel, we must have a good grasp of Paul’s teaching in Romans. That, in turn, means that we must have a good grasp of Romans 6. Sadly, many believers do not have this. In particular, there is a great deal of misunderstanding over the apostle’s use of ‘baptise’ and ‘baptism’ in Romans 6:3-4. The consequence can be serious beyond words: it can lead to a wrong view of a key aspect of the gospel; namely, conversion. N.T.Wright is one who gets Romans 6 wrong. And since he is very vocal about his view, thousands, listening to him, are in danger of making a vital mistake over conversion. David Gay has already engaged with Wright over the question of conversion with regard to justification by faith – see his ‘Conversion Ruined: The New Perspective and the Conversion of Sinners’. He now does the same over Wright’s misunderstanding of baptism, and the catastrophic effect this has on conversion. This booklet is not an academic study. Gay has not written to score points in some kind of theological chess game. The Bible is clear: unless a man is converted, he will perish. In this work, therefore, Gay is wrestling for the souls of men, for their everlasting happiness. Nothing could be more crucial. This kindle has a fully active TOC.

Constantine Tischendorf: The Life and Work of a 19th Century Bible Hunter

Stanley E. Porter - 2014
He existed in an age when biblical studies as we know it was being formed, when the quest for forgotten manuscripts and lost treasures was being undertaken with no less zeal and intrigue than it is today. It was Tischendorf who found, and preserved, the oldest extant version of the complete bible that we know of, the so-called Codex Sinaiticus, which he discovered in poor condition at St Catherine's Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai, in 1846. With the discovery of the Codex Tischendorf, and others, was to take the study of biblical texts further than ever before, through linguistic methods, and attention to the most ancient sources available. In many ways Tischendorf was a father figure of the modern Historical Critical Method. In this short biography, Stanley E. Porter, himself one of the most respected scholars of the New Testament and Koine Greek currently writing, gives a portrait of Tischendorf's life and work, together with an annotated republication of Tischendorf's influential work on the Gospels. Published to celebrate Tischendorf's bicentenary, in 2015, this volume will be a must for those seeking to understand how the study of biblical manuscripts began, and to understand the man who discovered the oldest version of the bible as we know it.
