    Demonstrating Luke's competence as a historian.

    It's often considered not as theologically serious as the writings of Paul, nor as gracious as the gospels. For some it's too works-oriented, for others just a bit obscure. Some have even questioned whether it is truly a Christian book. Let's face it. You're much more likely to see a seminary course on Romans or Galatians than on James, or to hear a sermon, for that matter! Bruce Epperly doesn't agree with that perspective. Not only does he think James has something important to say about the way we live as 21st century Christians, just as it did for 1st century Christians, but he also doesn't think James is in opposition to Paul. He suspects the two apostles would have had no difficulty with each other's theology. In this third volume of the Topical Line Drives series, he aims to direct readers to the important message of this little book for contemporary Christians. He provides a fresh orientation and focus to understanding the message. Once you've read his thoughts you'll likely never read James in the same way again. Certainly, you won't dismiss it.

    Changes include 1) The readings of the newly discovered Papyri 117 127 have been incorporated into this edition, thereby opening up interesting perspectives particularly for Acts of the Apostles. Besides, it is now displayed in the apparatus, where selected modern Bible translations (English, German, French, Spanish) are based on a variant reading rather than the principal version of the text. 2) A special focus of the revision was on the Catholic Epistles, in which the edition has been made consistent with the Second Edition of the Editio Critica Maior and the 28th Edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece. This has led to more than 30 modifications in the reading text and resulted in a new selection of witnesses for the textual apparatus, in addition to modifications of the selection of apparatus units. 3) The Discourse Segmentation Apparatus has also undergone thorough revision. 4) Finally, the UBS 5 edition was typeset with a new, aesthetically appealing and readily legible Greek font.

    Consequently, if we want to fully appreciate the gospel, we must have a good grasp of Paul’s teaching in Romans. That, in turn, means that we must have a good grasp of Romans 6. Sadly, many believers do not have this. In particular, there is a great deal of misunderstanding over the apostle’s use of ‘baptise’ and ‘baptism’ in Romans 6:3-4. The consequence can be serious beyond words: it can lead to a wrong view of a key aspect of the gospel; namely, conversion. N.T.Wright is one who gets Romans 6 wrong. And since he is very vocal about his view, thousands, listening to him, are in danger of making a vital mistake over conversion. David Gay has already engaged with Wright over the question of conversion with regard to justification by faith – see his ‘Conversion Ruined: The New Perspective and the Conversion of Sinners’. He now does the same over Wright’s misunderstanding of baptism, and the catastrophic effect this has on conversion. This booklet is not an academic study. Gay has not written to score points in some kind of theological chess game. The Bible is clear: unless a man is converted, he will perish. In this work, therefore, Gay is wrestling for the souls of men, for their everlasting happiness. Nothing could be more crucial. This kindle has a fully active TOC.

    He existed in an age when biblical studies as we know it was being formed, when the quest for forgotten manuscripts and lost treasures was being undertaken with no less zeal and intrigue than it is today.
