The Epistles of John

Joel R. Beeke - 2006
It has no formal salutation, no personal words of greeting, and no concluding benediction. After a brief prologue (1:1-4) the writer goes directly to what is on his heart, the message which we have heard of him and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all (1:5). Second and Third John are similar in structure, style, and theme. In both letters John introduces himself as the elder. In both letters John offers commendations for good behavior and rebukes for bad conduct. And in both letters his major theme is the truth, for in both John is determined to warn believers against false teachers and to protect from errors that are infiltrating the church of God.

Mining insights from sources as diverse as ancient creation myths and contemporary children's books, he highlights our ongoing disconnect from the cosmos, tracing its undeniable spiritual and philosophical impact. The Luminous Dusk is an elegant, lyrical call to seek the stillness of God in our clamorous world.

Eye To Eye: [Facing The Consequences Of Dividing Israel]

William Koenig - 2006
Over one hundred billion-dollar, record-setting catastrophes and/or events occurred while US presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump were pressuring or calling on Israel to divide their covenant land. • The costliest insurance events, the costliest hurricanes, the largest tornado outbreaks, the "Perfect Storm," the 9/11 terror events, and Hurricane Katrina corresponded to White House pressure on Israel to divide their land. • The US, the UN, and the EU do not have the authority to divide God s covenant land. • Calling the Israeli-Palestinian talks "Middle East peace talks" is a false narrative. • Jews have a three-thousand-year history with Jerusalem, and Christians have a two-thousand-year history. • The biblical heartland of Israel - Judea, Samaria, and East Jerusalem - is not to be part of an Arab State. • The Bible declares that Jerusalem will become a burdensome stone, and efforts to divide the city and land will lead to Armageddon, the final battle for Jerusalem. • The God of Israel will continue to rebuke those leaders and their nations attempting to divide His land!

The Birthing of the New Testament: The Intertextual Development of the New Testament Writings

Thomas L. Brodie - 2006
In its place, Brodie's stunning book invites us to suspend all 'knowledge' we already have about the history of the New Testament's development, and to be willing to entertain the following thesis. Everything hinges on Proto-Luke, a history of Jesus using the Elijah-Elisha narrative as its model, which survives in 10 chapters of Luke and 15 of Acts. Mark then uses Proto-Luke, transposing its Acts material back into the life of Jesus. Matthew deuteronomizes Mark, John improves on the discourses of Matthew. Luke-Acts spells out the story at length. Add the Pauline corpus, the descendant of Deuteronomy via the Matthean logia, and the New Testament is virtually complete. This is a totalizing theory, an explanation of everything, and its critics will be numerous. But even they will be hugely intrigued, and have to admit that Brodie's myriads of challenging observations about literary affinities demand an answer.

The Truth Seeking Heart: Austin Farrer And His Writings (Canterbury Studies In Spiritual Theology)

Ann Loades - 2006
Described as 'the one genius that the Church of England produced' in the last century and 'author of incomparably the most interesting theological books ever to come out of Oxford', his great legacy is that his considerable learning expressed itself as practical spiritual direction. He believed that after all the argument, analysis and sifting of evidence, the purpose of theology was to show how to live and how to love. He died in 1968 and his many books are now out of print. Here is a thematically arranged anthology of his most influential writings with an extended introduction that assesses his contribution to Anglican life and through today.

Simone Swan: Adobe Building

Dennis Dollens - 2006
Crocker Ltd., Architectural Conservation“Swan’s life and work perfectly capture the spirit and romance of the American West. Only at the risk of its own irrelevance will the architecture profession ignore the lessons in Dollens’ book on Swan’s practical yet elegant and modern adobe solutions to housing.”—William Menking, editor of The Architect’s NewspaperLike an organism sitting and breathing on its site in the Chihuahuan desert, the Swan House is a building of organic beauty and hybrid cultural intelligence. Simone Swan has created an architectural and environmental project that re-examines and promotes traditional adobe building while introducing compatible forms, such as the Nubian vault and dome.Swan studied with the great Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy in his Cairo studio and after his death in 1989 adopted his mission of helping house the world’s poor.Simone Swan: Adobe Building is the first book to discuss and illustrate Swan’s architecture while also chronicling one of her annual workshops in Dollens’ first-hand account. Dollens suggests that by biologically analyzing historic adobe we may be able to hybridize its constituents as replacements for current toxic materials, creating new biomimetic, adobe-related building materials suitable for green architecture.Dennis Dollens is the author of D2A: Digital to Analog; DBA: Digital-Botanic Architecture; Exodesic: Structures, Tumbleweeds, Electronics; and El Proyecto TumbleTruss / The TumbleTruss Project.
