Antichrist (De Controversiis)

Robert Bellarmine - 2016
Therefore, St. Robert Bellarmine, the greatest controversial author of the Reformation period, turned his pen to answering the challenge which resulted in a pure shredding of their position. Bellarmine's argumentation begins first with Scripture, then with the Fathers of the Church, then with appeals to reason and the later Theologians. He first shows that the Protestant explication does not match up to the texts of Scripture that treat on the Antichrist, then he shows that the Pope cannot be Antichrist since Antichrist has not yet come, giving proofs from the Old and New Testaments and then the Fathers, along with the contradictions of the Protestants themselves. He continues with a discussion of 666, the mark of Antichrist and many other things that not only defend the Church, but also show the positive teaching of the Church Fathers and the Tradition in regard to Antichrist. "I am delighted that the eschatological mission of the Holy Fathers Enoch and Elias, so well testified to in Sacred Tradition, but virtually forgotten in our day and age, will become more widely known."We owe a real debt of gratitude to Ryan Grant for bringing this work to a wider audience. I pray that it receives a very wide reading." -Fr. Philip Wolfe, FSSP"In the history of the writings about the Antichrist, other than the Fathers, the text of St. Robert Bellarmine is of prime importance. —Fr. Chad Ripperger, PhD"Mr. Grant has once again done the Catholic world a great favor by making available yet another mini-treatise of the great Counter-Reformation Doctor, St. Robert Bellarmine, rightly feared by all the Protestant controversialists as one who shreds every anti-Catholic argument with cogent reasoning and an encyclopedic knowledge of Scripture and Tradition. This translation of the saint's probing commentary on the identity and work of Antichrist is more pertinent than ever, not only because the Protestant arguments he is dealing with have never entirely disappeared, but also because we are living in an age of exponentially intensifying evil that might well make many Catholics wonder if we are living in the end times. Since Antichrist is the very herald of the end times, it behooves us to study carefully his features and characteristics, as drawn for us by St. Paul and other inspired authors." -Dr. Peter Kwasniewski, Wyoming Catholic College"Here is a timely book for an age when many are looking around for the Antichrist, often seeing foreshadowings of him here and there. Is he alive? Is he walking the earth? In seeking to answer these questions, many in the past (i.e., various Protestants leaders and writers) have actually aided his coming by becoming Antichrist themselves. To avoid this pitfall, read this excellent book penned by a holy doctor of the Church." —Fr. Sean Kopczynski, MSJB

Square One: The Foundations of Knowledge

Steve Patterson - 2016
I'm certain of it. It's not popular to say. It's not popular to think. But I know it's true." So begins an examination into the most fundamental questions in philosophy. Does objective truth exist? Can we know anything with certainty? Are there true logical contradictions? Steve Patterson answers emphatically, "We can know absolute, certain, and objective truths. These truths serve as the foundation for the rest of our knowledge." Square One is an examination of knowledge, logic, and the extreme skepticism that permeates modern thinking. It contains several refutations to popular attacks on human reason, including a resolution to the Liar's Paradox. Patterson writes in an easy-to-read, non-academic style. There's no jargon or long-winded pontificating about ideas that don't matter. This book is a response to those who insist that "Truth cannot be known."

The Mack's Bible: How To Have More Women And Take Back Your Manhood

W. James Dennis - 2016
But I’m here to tell you that you CAN be VERY successful with women. It’s no secret that for decades there have always been men who were very successful at meeting and seducing women. In our modern time, “the streets” have picked up the terms "Mack" and "Playa". These names have become synonymous with men who are highly skilled in those areas. I know REAL Game and I teach REAL Game. I’ve been doing it for years – any of my other books, blog posts and podcasts will support that fact. You can learn to get almost ANY girl you want. It comes down to having the correct understanding about 2 main things – (1) You have to understand what it really means to BE a MAN and (2) why being a man is ATTRACTIVE to women; they find a real man difficult to resist. The average male will go through a large part of his life trying to chase, date, sleep with and understand women. This is why I’ve written this book; The Mack’s Bible. You can learn easier, faster and cheaper by understanding what Macks have always known. Success with women is NOT based on how much money you have, your social status or even your physical attractiveness. Yes, those things can help, but at the end of the day that’s NOT what a woman really wants. What a woman really wants is a MAN. This book explains to you in great detail what that is and how to become it. A Mack is the ultimate gentleman. But a gentleman on HIS terms, not the WOMAN’S terms. A Mack knows what women really want and is able to deliver it with precision and confidence. This is REAL GAME. These aren’t tricks, pressure techniques, framing techniques, arrogant behavior, playing hard to get or being deceitful. This knowledge simply works; if you work it.Here are just some of the things you’ll discover:•Date almost any girl you WANT – age, career and relationship status won’t matter•STOP hearing, “Let’s just be friends…”•Conquer and BYPASS resistance•Have women CHASE you for a change•The 5 (plus 1) greatest needs of a woman and how to FULFILL them•What being a MAN actually means and how to develop it•The methods of seducing a woman QUICKLY – it can even be done in a single date•How to program (and reprogram) your thinking to bring out your natural CONFIDENCE•How to APPROACH women anytime and anywhere•How to hold a conversation with any woman and NEVER run out of conversation•What to do and NOT do on a date•What a Mack’s PROGRAM is and how to create one for yourself•How to date, sleep with and manage MULTIPLE women•Why women “test” you and how to PASS with flying colors every time•How to develop a Mack’s secret weapon, his “aura”, and how this will DRAW women to you•Capture ALL of the woman – mind, heart, body and soulThese techniques work on all women. Culture and upbringing will not be a factor. Why? Because you’ll learn the true NATURE of women and what they REALLY want. These are “hardwired” into every woman on the planet; they will respond to them.

A Little Book for New Philosophers: Why and How to Study Philosophy

Paul Copan - 2016
Many Christians see little point in it at all. But as Paul Copan contends, it is possible to affirm theology's preeminence without diminishing the value and contribution of philosophy. In A Little Book for New Philosophers, Copan offers a concise introduction to the study of philosophy. Aimed at newcomers, this brief overview is both a survey of philosophy's basic aims and categories and an apology for its proper function in the life of the Christian. "By God's grace," Copan writes, "philosophy can enhance our understanding and worship of God . . . and assist us in defending the coherence of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."

Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity

David J Downs - 2016
Despite this tradition, David Downs traces the early and sustained presence of yet another means by which Christians imagined atonement for sin: merciful care for the poor.In Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity, Downs begins by considering the economic context of almsgiving in the Greco-Roman world, a context in which the overwhelming reality of poverty cultivated the formation of relationships of reciprocity and solidarity. Downs then provides detailed examinations of almsgiving and the rewards associated with it in the Old Testament, Second Temple Judaism, and the New Testament. He then attends to early Christian texts and authors in which a theology of atoning almsgiving is developed-- 2 Clement, the Didache, the Epistle of Barnabas, Polycarp, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Cyprian. In this historical and theological reconstruction, Downs outlines the emergence of a model for the atonement of sin in Christian literature of the first three centuries of the Common Era, namely, atoning almsgiving, or the notion that providing material assistance to the needy cleanses or covers sin.Downs shows that early Christian advocacy of almsgiving's atoning power is located in an ancient economic context in which fiscal and social relationships were deeply interconnected. Within this context, the concept of atoning almsgiving developed in large part as a result of nascent Christian engagement with scriptural traditions that present care for the poor as having the potential to secure future reward, including heavenly merit and even the cleansing of sin, for those who practice mercy. Downs thus reveals how sin and its solution were socially and ecclesiologically embodied, a vision that frequently contrasted with disregard for the social body, and the bodies of the poor, in Docetic and Gnostic Christianity. Alms, in the end, illuminates the challenge of reading Scripture with the early church, for numerous patristic witnesses held together the conviction that salvation and atonement for sin come through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and the affirmation that the practice of mercifully caring for the needy cleanses or covers sin. Perhaps the ancient Christian integration of charity, reward, and atonement has the potential to reshape contemporary Christian traditions in which those spheres are separated.--C. Clifton Black, Otto A. Piper Professor of Biblical Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary "International Journal of Public Theology"

Uncertainty: The Soul of Modeling, Probability & Statistics

William Briggs - 2016
The ultimate goal is to call into question many standard tenets and lay the philosophical and probabilistic groundwork and infrastructure for statistical modeling. It is the first book devoted to the philosophy of data aimed at working scientists and calls for a new consideration in the practice of probability and statistics to eliminate what has been referred to as the "Cult of Statistical Significance." The book explains the philosophy of these ideas and not the mathematics, though there are a handful of mathematical examples. The topics are logically laid out, starting with basic philosophy as related to probability, statistics, and science, and stepping through the key probabilistic ideas and concepts, and ending with statistical models. Its jargon-free approach asserts that standard methods, such as out-of-the-box regression, cannot help in discovering cause. This new way of looking at uncertainty ties together disparate fields -- probability, physics, biology, the "soft" sciences, computer science -- because each aims at discovering cause (of effects). It broadens the understanding beyond frequentist and Bayesian methods to propose a Third Way of modeling.
