    Travelling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin was the first white man to depict Plains Indians in their native territory. The author spent eight years traveling among the Indians of the Northwest and the prairies, noting their customs and recording his observations with pen and brush. Catlin published his observation in a multi-volume set of books on the Indian tribes he witnessed. In "My Life Among the Indians" the parts of Catlin's volumes on the North American Indians which will be of most interest to the public have been condensed and brought together in chronological order. It is a splendid book to read and to own, being made up from two large volumes of letters written by George Catlin, the well-known painter of Indian subjects. There are sixteen illustrations from the artist's original drawings. Mr. Catlin traveled extensively in the Indian country, making a fine collection of Indian specimens which he afterwards exhibited in this country and in foreign lands. Many of these specimens, together with his paintings, which were so true to life among the Indians, are still preserved in Washington. It was Catlin who, in 1832, made the suggestion that the government should set aside a great National Park in the Yellowstone region.     On his third expedition, 1905-08, Hedin investigated the Central Persian desert basins, the western highlands of Tibet, and the Transhimalaya, which for some time afterward was called the Hedin Range. He visited the 9th Panchen Lama in the cloister city of Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, and was the first European to reach the Kailash region, the sacred Lake Manasarovar and the sacred Mount Kailash, the midpoint of the earth according to Buddhist and Hindu mythology. His most important accomplishment was the sources of the Indus and Brahmaputra Rivers. "Traversing the Chang-tang in Tibet through Srinagar and Leh he reached to Shigatse. Thence he went back to Lake Mana sarowar along the Tsangpo and descended the Indus, and then towards Leh and returned to Simla by the Sutlej route" (Kakushi) Hedin was responsible for putting Tibet on the map, literally. His surveys and mapping expeditions helped to discover for the world the physical geography of the region.

    Born on 24 Mar 1874 in Budapest, the author moved to the USA in 1878. Starting out as an ordinary magician, he took Illinois by storm by performing his handcuff act in 1899. Within months he became known all over the USA. The rest is history. In this volume, Houdini demonstrates with pictures, the various methods of undoing locks, handcuffs, straitjackets and kindred devices. He travels to various countries of the world and takes on the greatest performers in his sphere, of many lands. The man whom no lock could restrain wrote this book at the young age of 23. He wrote one before and five later and was also a very capable and unbiased author in his own right.

    Remsberg reveals that while there may be some historical evidence for the existence of a man named Jesus, the supernatural "Christ" of Christian dogma could not have existed.Using the tools of textual criticism and applying rigorous logical analysis, Remsberg carefully examines the New Testament Scriptures, the writings of well-known pagan authors from the time of Jesus as well as the works of later Christian apologists, he finds precious little evidence for the supposed miracles worked by Jesus, or even for his birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. His conclusion is that the divine, miracle-working Christ of traditional Christianity is a myth, which was developed over many centuries by a community of believers and was heavily influenced by mythic elements of Greek, Roman, and eastern religions. Remsberg concludes this interesting and thorough study with a detailed discussion of the various ancient sources from which the Christ myth evolved. The Christ is both an excellent introduction to biblical criticism and a valuable contribution to freethought.

    Sir William Mitchell Ramsay (1851-1939), Scottish classical scholar and archaeologist, and Gertrude Bell (1868-1926), traveller, archaeologist and diplomatist, joined forces for an expedition investigating the Hittite and Byzantine site of Bin-Bir-Kilisse in Turkey in 1907. Bell was successful in establishing the chronology of Byzantine churches, and her findings constitute the middle two parts of the book, on buildings and ecclesiastical architecture. Ramsay contributed the first and last parts, on the historical and geographical details of the churches and an account of other notable monuments in the region. Ramsay was knighted in 1906 and both scholars were honoured by the Royal Geographical Society. In 1913 Bell became one of the first women to be elected a Fellow of the Society.
