Ante-Nicene Fathers, 10 Vols

Alexander Roberts - 1874
It was intended to comprise translations into English of all the extant works of the Fathers (with the exception of the more bulky works of Origen) down to the date of the first General Council held at Nicaea in 325 A.D. This American edition by Arthur Cleveland Coxe is a revision of the original series edited by Alexander Roberts and Sir James Donaldson and published in Edinburgh. The revision involves a major rearrangement to conform to the historical sequence, the addition of brief introductions and notes indicating variances in readings, specifying references to scripture or literature, clarifying obscure passages, and noting corruptions or distortions of patristic testimony (as forged in the Decretals). The basic aim of the translations has been to strive for literary exactness, placing the English reader as nearly as possible on an equal footing with those who are able to read the original.Volume Titles:Volume 1: Apostolic Fathers, Justin Martyr, IrenaeusVolume 2: Hermas, Tatian, Athenagoras, Theophilus, Clement of AlexandriaVolume 3: TertullianVolume 4: Tertullian (IV), Minucius Felix, Commodian, OrigenVolume 5: Hippolytus, Cyprian, Caius, Novatian, AppendixVolume 6: Gregory Thaumaturgus, Dionysius the Great, Julius Africanus, Anatolius and Minor Writers, Methodius, ArnobiusVolume 7: Lactantius, Venantius, Asterius, Victorinus, Dionysius, Apostolic Teaching and Constitutions, Homily, and LiturgiesVolume 8: Twelve Patriarchs, Excerpts and Epistles, The Clementina, Aprocryphal Gospels and Acts, Syriac DocumentsVolume 9: Gospel of Peter, Diatessaron, Testament of Abraham, Epistles of Clement, Origen and Miscellaneous WorksVolume 10: Bibliography, General Index, Annotated Index of Authors and Works

Tell it All A Woman's Life in Polygamy

Fanny Stenhouse - 1874
She begins her story with an account of how as a young woman her family had converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and how she had attracted the attention, and subsequently married, T. B. H. Stenhouse. Living in Europe they were unaware of how their religion was developing in the Midwest and how the practice of plural marriage was beginning to become ever more prevalent among the members of their faith. Responding to encouragement and counselling they eventually emigrated to the promised land of Utah and to their horror they began to learn that the rumors of Joseph Smith’s polygamic revelation were true and that some of the church leadership, such as Brigham Young, had over fifty wives. Tell it All provides fascinating insight into how the Mormon faith was developing in the mid-nineteenth century and how women such as Fanny were struggling to come to terms with doctrines such as polygamy. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints largely distanced itself from polygamy in the later-nineteenth century, much due to the work of women such as Fanny Stenhouse and others including a former wife of Brigham Young, Ann Eliza Young. This book also uncovers some of the other darker moments of Mormon history such as the Mountains Meadows Massacre, in which the men and women of an emigrant wagon train were indiscriminately slaughtered by Mormons of the Nauvoo Legion. “added more details on polygamy, on Brigham Young’s life in polygamy, and on the Mountains Meadows Massacre” The John Whitmer Historical Association Journal Fanny Stenhouse was an early Mormon pioneer who, along with her husband T. B. H. Stenhouse, defected from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, largely due to their disagreements with the church about polygamy. Tell it All A Woman's Life in Polygamy was first published in 1872 and Fanny passed away in 1904.

Common Sense in the Household: A Manual of Practical Housewifery

Marion Harland - 1874
To this may be added, if you like, cracked bones of cooked game, or of underdone beef 01 mutton; but for flavor and nourishment, depend upon the juices of the meat which was put in raw. Cut this into smali pieces, and beat the bone until it is fractured at every inch of 1ts length. Put them on in cold water, without salt, and heat very slowly. Do not boil fast at any stage of the operation. Keep the pot covered, and do not add the salt until the meat is thoroughly done, as it has a tendency to harden the fibres, and restrain the flow of he juices. Strain - always through a cullender, after which clear soups should be filtered through a hair-sieve or coarse bobbinet lace. The bag should not be squeezed. It is slovenly to leave rags of meat, husks of vegetables and bits of bone in the tureen. Do not uncover until you are ready to ladle out the soup. Do this neatly and quickly, having your soup-plates heated beforehand. Most soups are better the second day than the first, unless they are warmed over too quickly or left too long upon the are after they are hot. In the one case they are apt to scorch in the other they become insipid.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
