Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan

Frederick Catherwood - 1844
Frederick Catherwood (1799 – 1854) was an English artist, architect and explorer, best remembered for his meticulously detailed drawings of the ruins of the Maya civilization. He explored Mesoamerica in the mid 19th century with writer John Lloyd Stephens. Their books, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatán and Incidents of Travel in Yucatán, were best sellers and introduced to the Western world the civilization of the ancient Maya. In 1837, Catherwood was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Honorary member. The book "Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan", was published in 1841, with text by Stephens and engravings based on the drawings of Catherwood. The following year Catherwood published "Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan", with 25 colour lithographs from watercolours he made at various ruins. This folio was published in May 1844 simultaneously in London and New York in an edition of 300. Some 282 copies are known to survive, mostly held in private collections or libraries. This Work has been undertaken with the view of furnishing authentic materials for the discussion of the interesting questions connected with the remains of an ancient and extinct civilization in Central America, hy supplying faithful representations of the Monuments on a scale commensurate with their importance. The object of the artist has been, by combining accuracy of detail in the antiquarian subjects, with the picturesque scenery, costume, and character of the country, to produce a volume Worthy of the existing state of art, and generally attractive from the beauty of its execution, and the entire novelty of its subject. Catherwood writes: "In addition to the descriptions to each plate, I offer here a few general remarks, followed by a brief account of the principal places visited by Mr. Stephens and myself, and a sketch of the probable opinions as to their builders.
