Usagi Yojimbo, Vol. 1: The Ronin

Stan Sakai - 1987
He's a rabbit bodyguard, a samurai who wanders the mountains, plains, and villages of a 17th-century Japan populated almost exclusively by anthropomorphic animals. Cats, snakes, rhinos, and ninja moles plot and fight their way across a land ravaged by civil war. The 10 stories in this first collection introduce Usagi, the evil Lord Hikiji, and a host of other characters. The stories themselves can stand alone, but taken together they begin to form an ongoing saga of treachery and revenge. Sometimes violent, sometimes funny, Usagi's adventures are filled with fascinating historical detail. The costumes, landscapes, and buildings are beautifully drawn, creating such a sense of realism it's easy to forget the hero is a rabbit. If you buy the first book in this series, you'll want the rest.

Swamp Thing Book 1

Alan Moore - 1987
comic book industry with the revitalization of the horror comic book THE SWAMP THING. His deconstruction of the classic monster stretched the creative boundaries of the medium and became one of the most spectacular series in comic book history. With modern-day issues explored against a backdrop of horror, SWAMP THING's stories became commentaries on environmental, political and social issues, unflinching in their relevance.*FROM PREFACE...SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING. 'See if you like'em.' Like them? Indeed I did. Here was someone who was finally leading the comic book towards its true potential with insightful scripts and excellent art direction, pushing through those hazed peripheries of the imagination with stories that were not just literate, but - and I don't use the word lightly - inspired. Let's say I was somewhat impressed. THE SWAMP THING is no quick, satisfying read. No, it's much more than that. The stories give cause for thought and then further, deeper thought long after you've laid them aside. Now that's some achievement in this field. This is no Incredible Hulk or The Heap (remember The Heap?). The Swamp Thing isn't a man transformed, but a dying man's consciousness, his psyche, absorbed through circumstances by the environment of his death. Now that's heavy stuff, but when you take the mental leap it makes perfect and fascinating sense. And once you decide to be swept along by Alan Moore's fertile imagination (helped along by some excellently succinct prose), then there's no turning back. You're hooked. Me, I'm glad to be back on that hook. JAMES HERBERT

Through one and two page exploits (all the colour strips were previously printed in Playboy whilst the black and white adventures have no single source or provenance I can find), this feisty femme – in a still mostly man’s world – endeavours to live her life by her own ready-made rules. She’s got an apartment, a nudist roommate, a horny law-student boyfriend and enough savvy, modern sense not to tell anybody she’s shagging her English Lit Professor. Her classy, sophisticated, raucous riotous, hilariously true-to-life exploits and uniquely female viewpoint come in no small part from Sarah Downs, who was Kurtzman’s associate, assistant and co-writer in the 1980s, and a highly skilled colourist and teacher of cartooning at the School of Visual Arts.
