Beowulf: A New Translation

Maria Dahvana Headley - 2020
A monster seeks silence in his territory. A warrior seeks to avenge her murdered son. A dragon ends it all. These familiar components of the epic poem are seen with a novelist’s eye toward gender, genre, and history. Beowulf has always been a tale of entitlement and encroachment — of powerful men seeking to become more powerful and one woman seeking justice for her child — but this version brings new context to an old story. While crafting her contemporary adaptation, Headley unearthed significant shifts lost over centuries of translation; her Beowulf is one for the twenty-first century.

Secretly Sylvie believes that Andrée is a prodigy about whom books will be written. The girls become close. They talk for hours about equality, justice, war and religion; they lose respect for their teachers; they build a world of their own. But they can't stay like this forever. Written in 1954, five years after The Second Sex, the novel was never published in Simone de Beauvoir's lifetime. This first English edition includes an afterword by her adopted daughter, who discovered the manuscript hidden in a drawer, and photographs of the real-life friendship which inspired and tormented the author.

Inseparable

Simone de Beauvoir - 2020
For the next ten years, the two are the closest of friends and confidantes as they explore life in a post-World War One France, and as Andrée becomes increasingly reckless and rebellious, edging closer to peril.Sylvie, insightful and observant, sees a France of clashing ideals and religious hypocrisy—and at an early age is determined to form her own opinions. Andrée, a tempestuous dreamer, is inclined to melodrama and romance. Despite their different natures they rely on each other to safeguard their secrets while entering adulthood in a world that did not pay much attention to the wills and desires of young women.Deemed too intimate to publish during Simone de Beauvoir’s life, Inseparable offers fresh insight into the groundbreaking feminist’s own coming-of-age; her transformative, tragic friendship with her childhood friend Zaza Lacoin; and how her youthful relationships shaped her philosophy. Sandra Smith’s vibrant translation of the novel will be long cherished by de Beauvoir devotees and first-time readers alike.

The Yellow Wall-Paper

Sara Barkat - 2020
Now, more than a hundred years later, this image-rich work has been interpreted by artist Sara Barkat—in a manner that combines both philosophical thought and visual intrigue.Sometimes understood as feminist literature, sometimes understood as exploring mental illness, and sometimes understood as both at the same time, this story is oddly poetic even when it is chilling and challenging. The tale contains subtexts that touch upon the nature of Imagination, as well as the act of Writing, and the artist has enhanced these subtexts with the inclusion of Victorian flower symbols, such as thistle for independence and lupine for imagination. Watch, too, for the appearance of some of history’s most imaginative art, refashioned and in dialog with the story at hand, which gives a sense of timelessness and broader societal import to the tale.

The History of Middle-earth, Part One

Christopher Tolkien - 2020
Tolkien is famous the world over for his unique literary creation, exemplified in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. It was to this enormous task of literary construction that Tolkien’s youngest son and literary heir, Christopher, applied himself to produce the monumental and endlessly fascinating series of twelve volumes, The History of Middle-earth.

Believing: The Other Stories of Zenna Henderson

Zenna Henderson - 2020
The People, a group of human-appearing aliens, escaped the destruction of their home world only to be shipwrecked on Earth, where they struggled to hide their extra abilities. These stories were collected into one volume in 1995 when NESFA Press published Ingathering: The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson. During the same period, Henderson published an equal number of non-People stories. Like the stories of The People, they range from comforting to unnerving. Fans of The People will recognize the same underlying belief in the goodness of people and other beings as they struggle for a chance at a better future. These stories have a common theme — belief. A girl believes that the hills are lost beasts and leads them home; a boy believes he can fight evil with a pocket piece made from Popsicle sticks; a boy believes he can build a noise-eating machine — with fatal results. Believing: The Other Stories of Zenna Henderson contains every non-People story, all long out of print. Thirty-three of the stories in this volume are from her collections, The Anything Box and Holding Wonder. The remaining five stories and three poems were previously published in other magazines and anthologies. Welcome to Zenna Henderson’s world.

Death on the Nile and Other Hercule Poirot Mysteries

Agatha Christie - 2020
In Death on the Nile the tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile is shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life. Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems. In The ABC Murders there’s a serial killer on the loose, working his way through the alphabet and the whole country is in a state of panic: A is for Mrs. Ascher in Andover, B is for Betty Barnard in Bexhill, C is for Sir Carmichael Clarke in Churston. With each murder, the killer is getting more confident—but leaving a trail of deliberate clues to taunt the proud Hercule Poirot might just prove to be the first, and fatal, mistake. In Five Little Pigs, Poirot revisits the case of beautiful Caroline Crale, who was convicted of poisoning her husband. But just like the nursery rhyme, there were five other “little pigs” who could have done it: Philip Blake (the stockbroker), who went to market; Meredith Blake (the amateur herbalist), who stayed at home; Elsa Greer (the three-time divorcée), who had her roast beef; Cecilia Williams (the devoted governess), who had none; and Angela Warren (the disfigured sister), who cried all the way home. Sixteen years later, Caroline’s daughter is determined to prove her mother’s innocence, and Poirot just can’t get that nursery rhyme out of his mind.

Blood Royal: A Sequel to the Three Musketeers

Alexandre Dumas - 2020
In this volume all the plots and schemes set up in the previous novel come to dramatic fruition in the kind of exciting thrill-ride Dumas is famous for—while at the same time introducing the characters and themes that form the foundation of the rest of the series, leading to its great climax in The Man in the Iron Mask.In Blood Royal, the Four Musketeers all venture to England on parallel missions to save King Charles I, pursued by the murderous and vengeful Mordaunt, the son of Milady de Winter, the great villain of The Three Musketeers. Despite all his experience, d’Artagnan is repeatedly foiled by the much-younger Mordaunt, who erupts out of the past to embody the strengths of audacity and cunning that were once d’Artagnan’s hallmarks. Mordaunt has corrupted those youthful strengths, and the older d’Artagnan is no match for him until he is able to pull his former team together again. To do this d’Artagnan will have to become a true leader of men, leading not just by example but also by foresight, persuasion, and compromise. Only then can the team of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis be re-formed in all its might to defeat the specter of their past.Blood Royal is unmatched in Dumas’s oeuvre in its depictions of his most famous and beloved characters, and an unforgettable saga of swordplay, suspense, revenge, and ultimate triumph.

Miranda adores her Nana; she was practically raised by her due to the demanding careers held by her parents, who seemed to give more time to their professions than they gave to their only child.Despite the fact that Nana gave Miranda more than enough love during her childhood to make up for what she lacked in receiving from her parents, a void still continued to grow in Miranda’s soul as she became a woman. Her heart became fragile, and she longed for her mother’s love and approval. From her pursuit of an occupation, to her ultimate choice of a man, Miranda’s mother always seems to look down on her daughter’s decisions in life.Miranda’s soul fills with more and more doubt of ever obtaining a loving and healthy relationship with her mother. It’s a hard pill for Miranda to swallow, and she almost loses all hope; that is until death comes knocking at both of their doors. Reflecting on the wisdom she obtained in Nana’s garden, Miranda believes that the power of prayer and having faith the size of a mustard seed will be the ultimate remedy in fixing her disheartened soul. The seeds of prayer, faith, and love were planted in Miranda’s heart from childhood; a rose grew inside her, resulting in her becoming the strong-willed Christian woman that Nana always believed she could be. The Roots of Western Civilization: The Ancient World From Gilgamesh to Augustine

Anthony M. Esolen - 2020
Anthony Esolen will examine ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and Israel, seeing the disappointment and Messianic longing in the pagan Roman poet Virgil, and the fulfilled Messianic longing among the prophets and the inspired authors of the Old Testament. You will discover the ways in which the fulfillment of the person of Jesus Christ never ceases to surprise mankind, because it never ceases to contradict what fallen man accepts as great. As Esolen unfolds: Fallen man worships power, and Jesus enters Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey. Fallen man listens to sophisticated and sly rhetoric, but Jesus praises God for revealing mysteries to fools and children, and concealing them from those who are wise in the world’s ways. Fallen man clings to his creature comforts, but Jesus gives his life away. And at that, he gives it away to his enemies - namely to us. Fallen man wants to rule, but Jesus emptied himself, becoming obedient until death, even death upon a cross. Now, this changes the world entirely. We could fill a library with books on this change and still not plunged its depths. In this course, we will examine the ways in which even a pagan world anticipates this change, and we will end by considering the life of one man who discovered the radicality of this change upon the movements of his heart. In what way does the pagan world cry out for a savior? How do the confessions of one man speak to the universal within all of mankind? To examine the roots of a Civilization is to return to its life-source - its philosophies, myths, laws, and religions, in short its culture.Join Prof. Anthony Esolen as he journeys through the great literature of the ancient world discovering not only the timeless wisdom of such texts as the Theogony, the Aeneid, and the Confessions, but also their rich and broad impact on Western Civilization.

Hope is the Thing: A Collection of Poems by Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson - 2020
She worked on her poems meticulously yet never shared them, with few exceptions. Over the course of her life - a life woefully undersized for the scope of her genius - she eventually rejected all forms of meaning-making: religion, community, love, marriage and family. There was one exception: Poetry. Her language, addressed to some future anonymous person who might take the time to truly understand her intent, was her way to reach out to others with hope of communication and connection." - Evan RobertsonEmily Dickinson is often referred to as the Mother of American poetry, and she deserves the title. It's easy to miss some of the wonderful subtleties in her work when the meter carries you away.

The History of Middle-earth, Part Three

Christopher Tolkien - 2020
Tolkien is famous the world over for his unique literary creation, exemplified in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. What is less well known, however, is that he also produced a vast amount of further material that greatly expands upon the mythology and numerous stories of Middle-earth, and which gives added life to the thousand-year war between the Elves and the evil spirit Morgoth, and his terrifying lieutenant, Sauron. It was to this enormous task of literary construction that Tolkien’s youngest son and literary heir, Christopher, applied himself to produce the monumental and endlessly fascinating series of twelve volumes, The History of Middle-earth.

The work is celebrated both for its poetic style and philosophical depth. The simplicity and consistency of the writing makes it ideal for teaching Classical Japanese. For its reflection on impermanence and non-attachment, Hōjōki is a model of Buddhist thought. Mindful of the fleeting nature of this world, Chōmei demands that readers reconsider what is most important in life. The message is as evocative as it is universal.

The Colossus

Sylvia Plath - 2020
She simply writes good poetry. And she does so with a seriousness that demands only that she be judged equally seriously... There is an admirable no-nonsense air about this; the language is bare but vivid and precise, with a concentration that implies a good deal of disturbance with proportionately little fuss." Seamus Heaney said of The Colossus: "On every page, a poet is serving notice that she has earned her credentials and knows her trade."

Amongst all these are two of his masterstrokes, works that earned him laurels and established his fame as a writer. This beautiful leather-bound edition, with gilded edges and beautiful endpapers, holds these critically acclaimed pieces—the importance of Being earnest, a play that has been revived many times and adapted for radio, television, film, operas, musicals, and the picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde’s only novel that became his most-read and well-known work.

The Short Stories of Oscar Wilde: An Annotated Selection

Oscar Wilde - 2020
In this new selection of his short fiction, Wilde’s gifts as a storyteller are on full display, accompanied by informative facing-page annotations from Wilde biographer and scholar Nicholas Frankel. A wide-ranging introduction brings readers into the world from which the author drew inspiration. Each story in the collection brims with Wilde’s trademark wit, style, and sharp social criticism. Many are reputed to have been written for children, although Wilde insisted this was not true and that his stories would appeal to all “those who have kept the childlike faculties of wonder and joy.” “Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime” stands alongside Wilde’s comic masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest, while other stories—including “The Happy Prince,” the tale of a young ruler who had never known sorrow, and “The Nightingale and the Rose,” the story of a nightingale who sacrifices herself for true love—embrace the theme of tragic, forbidden love and are driven by an undercurrent of seriousness, even despair, at the repressive social and sexual values of Wilde’s day. Like his later writings, Wilde’s stories are a sweeping indictment of the society that would imprison him for his homosexuality in 1895, five years before his death at the age of forty-six.Published here in the form in which Victorian readers first encountered them, Wilde’s short stories contain much that appeals to modern readers of vastly different ages and temperaments. They are the perfect distillation of one of the Victorian era’s most remarkable writers.

Krazy Kat Collection: Selected Sunday Strips 1918–1919

George Herriman - 2020
Krazy, a free-spirited, gender-fluid feline (sometimes referred to as he, sometimes she, sometimes both in the same strip), pines for Ignatz Mouse. Ignatz scorns Krazy's affection, frequently lobbing bricks at the hapless cat — much to the indignation of Officer Pupp, a nightstick-wielding canine. The outlandish dramas play out in devilishly witty dialogue, delivered against a surrealistic desert backdrop. The antics of this extraordinary threesome entertained readers for decades, and The New York Times recently deemed the ahead-of-their-time comic strips "as entrancing today as when George Herriman wrote and drew them."This compilation presents choice strips dating from the years 1918 and 1919 of the long-running series. A perennial favorite of artists and intellectuals, it appeared in newspapers until 1944. Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst was such a fan that he gave Herriman a lifelong contract with King Features Syndicate. The cartoon's other devotees ranged from Woodrow Wilson to Dr. Seuss, and Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz declared, "I always thought if I could do something as good as Krazy Kat, I would be happy. Krazy Kat was always my goal.""Let's make no mistake about Krazy. A lot of people 'love' because, and a lot of people 'love' although, and a few individuals love. Love is something illimitable; and a lot of people spend their limited lives trying to prevent anything illimitable from happening to them. Krazy, however, is not a lot of people. Krazy is herself. Krazy is illimitable — she loves." — e. e. cummings"As the artwork is poetic, so is the writing's unique 'texture,' which comes in large part through the conglomeration of peculiar spellings and punctuations, dialects, interminglings of Spanish, phonetic renderings, and alliterations. Krazy Kat's Coconino County not only had a look; it had a sound as well. Slightly foreign, but uncontrived." — Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes

The Inferno

Ciaran Carson - 2020
A retelling of Dante's epic journey for the 21st-century reader.'Quite simply the best version of Dante there is' PAUL MULDOON, Irish Times. Almost eight centuries after its first publication, Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy remains an icon of Italian literature and of the epic genre. In Inferno, the first volume, the poet Virgil leads Dante's hero through hell, showing him the inhabitants of each of its nine circles and examples of the divine justice meted out to them.In this beautifully produced Apollo Library edition, Ciaran Carson's translation suffuses the text with wit, anger and irreverent vigour, without diminishing the pathos of the original. This is a retelling of Dante's epic journey for the twenty-first-century reader.

Man of High Empire: The Life of Pliny the Younger

Roy Gibson - 2020
60-112 C.E.)--senator and consul in the Rome of emperors Domitian and Trajan, eyewitness to the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, and early 'persecutor' of Christians on the Black Sea--remains Rome's best documented private individual between Cicero and Augustine. No Romanwriter, not even Vergil, ties his identity to the regions of Italy more successfully than Pliny. His individuality can be captured by focusing on the range of locales in which he lived: from his hometown of Comum (Como) at the foot of the Italian Alps, down through the villa and farms he owned inUmbria, to the senate and courtrooms of Rome and the magnificent residence he owned on the coast near the capital.Organized geographically, Man of High Empire is the first full-scale biography devoted solely to the Younger Pliny. Reserved, punctilious, occasionally patronizing, and perhaps inclined to overvalue his achievements, Pliny has seemed to some the ancient equivalent of Mr. Collins, the unctuous vicarof Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Roy K. Gibson reveals a man more complex than this unfair comparison suggests. An innovating landowner in Umbria and a deeply generous benefactor in Comum, Pliny is also a consul who plays with words in Rome and dispenses summary justice in the provinces. Asolicitous, if rather traditional, husband in northern Italy, Pliny is also a literary modernist in Rome, and--more surprisingly--a secret pessimist about Trajan, the 'best' of emperors. Pliny's life is a window on to the Empire at its zenith. The book concludes with an archaeological tour guide ofthe sites associated with Pliny.

The Essence of Progress and Poverty

Henry George - 2020
In his Foreword, Dewey noted, "It would require less than the fingers of the two hands to enumerate those who from Plato down rank with [George]. No man, no graduate of a higher educational institution, has a right to regard himself as an educated man in social thought unless he has some first-hand acquaintance with the theoretical contribution of this great American thinker." Fifteen brief chapters feature passages from George's highly influential book and examine why poverty persists throughout periods of economic and technological progress as well as the basis for economic cycles of boom and bust.

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: The Curse of Yig (Audio Drama)

H.P. Lovecraft - 2020
His inquiry uncovers an account from 1889 of settlers homesteading in the Indian Territories of Oklahoma. A pervasive fear of snakes nudges a simple settler towards madness. Are his fears of the dreaded snake god just the result of hearing old stories, or is a new story unfolding as Yig's curse takes hold?“The Curse of Yig” is rather an outlier among the tales of HPL. Going far from the comfortable backdrop of New England, Lovecraft made use of a setting in rural Oklahoma and created a new deity for his pantheon of Great Old Ones — the serpent god Yig. The story came about as a collaboration — of a sort — between Lovecraft and one of his revision clients, Zealia Bishop. Zealia sent HPL the germ of a story learned from her grandmother Compton, who lived in the Oklahoma territory in the late 1800s, and HPL developed it into something much richer and more satisfying.

Succubations & Incubations: Selected Letters of Antonin Artaud [1945-1947]

Antonin Artaud - 2020
They show Artaud at his most exposed, and they are perhaps his most explosive, tragic, sad, even humorous. Each of the correspondents that came into contact with Artaud during this time were in their own way deeply affected since his project was essentially an attack / on the mind of the public. Commenting on and elaborating key themes from his earlier writing, while venturing into new territory, Artaud recounts his torture and violation in asylums, his crucifixion two thousand years ago in Golgotha, his deception by occult initiates and doubles, and his intended journey to Tibet, where, aided by his daughters of the heart, he will finally put an end to these maneuvers of obscene bewitchment. Artaud also speaks of his plan to create a body without organs and extends this idea to the visual arts, where he argues that painting and drawing must wage a ceaseless battle against the limits of representation. The apocalyptic vision for mankind that led Artaud on a journey, beginning in Mexico in 1936 and ending, tragically, in Ireland in 1937, with a mental breakdown, silence, and long internment in asylums, concluded with the extremely prolific late period from which these letters were drawn. There is an unmistakable unity of vision that permeates the letters: the vision of an unceasing, ubiquitous, and malignant plot to close the mouth of lucidity by any means, and which must be resisted at all costs.

All Loves Excelling: The Saints' Knowledge of Christ's Love

John Bunyan - 2020
may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.' It was first titled 'The Saints' Knowledge of Christ s Love' and is worthy of being ranked alongside Sibbes and deals with a much neglected subject area. The subject matter of this work which was first preached, is greatly needed today. On the one hand, experiences of the Spirit are being claimed from which the glory of the redeemer and the wonder of his love are quite absent, while on the other, an almost total attention to the understanding and practising of scripture truth is having the effect of marginalising the experiential element in true, spiritual knowledge. Bunyan's description of Christ's love to believers and how they ought to know it, cuts in both the above-mentioned directions. From some 440 Bible references he shows how knowing Christ's love is the message of Scripture and also the essence of heaven, partly possessed and expressed on earth. Those who know it are rich beyond measure and they are the people who 'sweeten the churches and bring glory to God and to religion'.

The Fall of America Journals, 1965–1971

Allen Ginsberg - 2020
What his National Book Award–winning volume documented he had also recorded, playing a reel-to-reel tape machine given to him by Bob Dylan as he traveled the nation’s byways and visited its cities, finding himself again and again in the midst of history in the making—or unmaking. Through a wealth of autopoesy (transcriptions of these recorded poems) published here for the first time in the poet’s journals of this period, Ginsberg can be overheard collecting the observations, events, reflections and conversations that would become his most extraordinary work as he witnessed America at a time of historic upheaval and gave voice to the troubled soul at its crossroads. The Fall of America Journals, 1965–1971 contains some of Ginsberg’s finest spontaneous writing, accomplished as he pondered the best and worst his country had to offer. He speaks of his anger over the war in Vietnam, the continuing oppression of dissidents, intractable struggles, and experiments with drugs and sexuality. He mourns the deaths of his friends Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac, parses the intricacies of the presidential politics of 1968, and grapples with personal and professional challenges in his daily life. An essential backstory to his monumental work, the journals from these years also reveal drafts of some of his most highly regarded poems, including “Wichita Vortex Sutra,” “Wales Visitation,” “On Neal’s Ashes,” and “Memory Gardens,” as well as poetry published here for the first time and his notes on many of his vivid and detailed dreams. Transcribed, edited, and annotated by Michael Schumacher, a writer closely associated with Ginsberg’s life and work, these journals are nothing less than a first draft of the poet’s journey to the heart of twentieth-century America.

Schabraco and other Gothic tales from The Lady's Monthly Museum, 1798-1828

Jennie MacDonald - 2020
But with the inclusion of the Gothic tale “Schabraco” in its second issue, the magazine attracted immediate controversy and letters questioning the publication’s morality and suitability for young ladies. Despite – or perhaps because of – the outcry surrounding “Schabraco,” the magazine went on to be an extremely popular and significant outlet of Gothic fiction for the next thirty years.Though the Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Lewis, and their contemporaries have attracted considerable interest among readers and scholars in recent years, the vast output of Gothic fiction that appeared in popular magazines like The Lady’s Monthly Museum has been almost entirely ignored, probably because of lack of access to these rare texts. Now for the first time, editor Dr. Jennie MacDonald has collected the best Gothic texts from this important periodical, including novelettes, stories, fragments, poems and drama, enabling readers to discover at last a wealth of lost Gothic material. Also included are a scholarly introduction and annotations, as well as reproductions of engravings that accompanied the original publication of these tales.
