The Question of Canon: Challenging the Status Quo in the New Testament Debate

Michael J. Kruger - 2013
Kruger to pick apart modern scholarship's dominant view that the New Testament is a late creation of the church imposed on books originally written for another purpose. Calling into question this commonly held "extrinsic" view, Kruger here tackles the five most prevalent objections to the classic understanding of a quickly emerging, self-authenticating collection of authoritative scriptures. Already a noted author on the subject of the New Testament canon, Kruger addresses foundational and paradigmatic assumptions of the extrinsic model as he provides powerful rebuttals and further support for the classic, "intrinsic" view. This framework recognizes the canon as the product of internal forces evolving out of the historical essence of Christianity, not a development retroactively imposed by the church upon books written hundreds of years before. Unlike many books written on the emergence of the New Testament canon that ask "when?" or "how?" Kruger focuses this work on the "why?"--exposing weaknesses in the five major tenets of the extrinsic model as he goes. WhileThe Question of Canon scrutinizes today's popular scholastic view, it also offers an alternative concept to lay a better empirical foundation for biblical canon studies.

Randy Thornhorn - 2013
“An extraordinary work...” ~ William Peter Blatty “Captures the tragedy of romantic and familial love better than any story I have ever read.” ~ Janeiro Bento Hear the twilight song of Kestrel. And no end to what one brother will give for the other.Raised in Savannah by the sea, together, The Brothers Brass voices chime like heavenly bells. She touches Kestrel, she touches everyone. And they touch sweet Bettilia, forever. Then comes that fateful day when Kestrel says "I do" to his dance with the devil—his devil within and without. An epic fable of an epic family whose hearts are comic, profane, and profoundly true.“One of the South's wildest new voices.” ~ The Oxford American Magazine

True Companion: Thoughts on Being a Pastor's Wife

Nancy Wilson - 2013
In fact, you can see Nancy Wilson's thirty years of experience most clearly in how she reacts to the difficult stuff -- the stuff that can make you (especially if you're married to a pastor) feel inadequate and under-qualified.True Companion offers friendly, practical, and above all Christ-centered wisdom on how to help your husband in his vocation, how to deal with the "congregation at home" (kids), how much (or how little) a pastor's wife needs to be involved in the church, what sins tend to spring up in a pastor's home, how to deal with adversity from enemies (or from friends), and a host of other issues.

Why Christian Kids Need A Christian Education

Douglas Wilson - 2013
This is an antithesis that cuts across all areas of human life, including education. Christian parents are left with only two options for the training of their children: faithful education or unbelieving education. Though the right choice seems obvious, many Christian parents do not see the antithesis. In this little book, Douglas Wilson presents the case for providing a faithful, Christian education for all Christian kids, and explains why we even have to make that case to begin with.

The Cutest Girl in Class

Quentin S. Crisp - 2013
Clive is a boy longing for Marybeth, the girl next door. Now their disparate streams of lust and longing are about to cross, thanks to Thad, an aspiring, almost heartbreaking criminal, and Clive’s father, whose obsession with “inorganic women” endangers them all. A unique collaboration from Quentin S. Crisp (“Remember You’re A One-Ball!”), Justin Isis (I Wonder What Human Flesh Tastes Like) and Brendan Connell (Metrophilias), this serious novel with something serious to say is a lunatic three-headed dragon, equal parts rollicking caper, ribald farce and embittered love story. Fraught with double crosses and missing mannequins, this is Waiting for Godot meets Beach Blanket Bingo, the two of them falling in love and getting married in a church where the priest is John Waters.

Irving Harper: Works in Paper

Michael Maharam - 2013
Irving Harper is the most famous designer you have never heard of. Working as an associate at the office of George Nelson in the 1950s and ’60s, Harper was responsible for such icons of midcentury design as the Marshmallow sofa, the Ball clock, and numerous Herman Miller textile designs. Harper’s unrecognized contribution to this seminal era of design, and his incredible paper sculptures (made in his spare time to "relieve stress"), are presented for the first time in this book. An essay by design critic Julie Lasky introduces Harper’s commercial design work, recognizable designs from graphics to domestic goods to furniture that are still coveted and appreciated today, designed for the offices of Raymond Loewy, George Nelson, and then his own studio Harper + George. The second part of the book documents Harper’s extensive paper sculptures, which have never been exhibited. More than three hundred works fill Harper’s house and barn in Rye, New York, where this array of fantastical people and animal sculptures was created from modest and inexpensive materials as diverse as spaghetti and toothpicks in addition to paper. Images of Harper’s home, filled with furniture and objects of his own design as well as his paper sculptures, offer a rare glimpse into a Modern design enthusiast’s paradise.Offering insight into an important era of American design as well as the prolific output of a creative mind, this book promises to be the first to recognize Irving Harper’s contribution to the field and will appeal to fans of Modern design.

The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI's Manufactured War on Terrorism

Trevor Aaronson - 2013
A groundbreaking work of investigative journalism, The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI's Manufactured War on Terrorism exposes how the FBI has, under the guise of engaging in counterterrorism since 9/11, built a network of more than 15,000 informants whose primary purpose is to infiltrate Muslim communities to create and facilitate phony terrorist plots so that the Bureau can then claim it is winning the war on terror. An outgrowth of Trevor Aaronson's work as an investigative reporting fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, which culminated in an award-winning cover story in Mother Jones magazine, The Terror Factory reveals shocking information about the criminals, con men, and liars the FBI uses as paid informants--including the story of an accused murderer who has become one of the Bureau's most prolific terrorism snitches--as well as documenting the extreme methods the FBI uses to ensnare Muslims in terrorist plots, which are in reality conceived and financed by the FBI.The book also offers unprecedented detail into how the FBI has transformed from a reactive law enforcement agency to a proactive counterterrorism organization that traps hapless individuals in manufactured terrorist plots in order to justify the $3 billion it spends every year fighting terrorism.

Julian Fellowes, creator of <!--?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /-->Downton Abbey, contributes a foreword.   Praise for The English Country House: "For hundreds of years generation after generation of the families that built these rarely seen houses, has added to the delights seen within and without." -Min Hogg"Whatever virtues one assigns to the English country house (. . . .a daunting coffee table book just out from the Vendome Press), coziness is not one of them. . . .And yet the drafty beauty of the estates is such that it would clearly be worth enduring centuries upon centuries of emotional remoteness just to hang on to all that pomp and silver and canopied beds and coffered ceilings and graceful balustrades nestled in the sheepy hills." — TownandCountryMag.com"There's something mysterious about a stately home in the English countryside. . . . Peill takes a closer look at 10 such homes. . . . As if the beautiful photographs of the interiors and vistas weren't enough, Peill's text also looks at the histories and legacies of the families who occupied these estates." — MarthaStewart.com

Oh Sandy: An Anthology of Humor for a Serious Purpose

Lynn BeighleyJames Butler - 2013
Nobody understands this more than those who live nearby in New Jersey and New York and who have been devastated by the storm that left-and still leaves-them without food or shelter, without anything. While we knew that the world knew about Sandy, locally we who experienced the storm firsthand thought we were the ones who understood it best. We hatched an idea that, to ease that hardship, to make it a bit easier to bear-not eliminate it, we should do something to make people feel better inside. With this in mind, the idea for this anthology was born.We put out a call for humorous work that was about experiencing a disaster, or surviving a hurricane, or living in New Jersey. We hoped that we might be able to bring a smile to some folks by sharing similar experiences, and we expected a fair number of responses from those in the area who had not been affected by Sandy or who had been affected but still had enough left in them to reach out to others. There is no way we could have predicted the world-wide response that resulted as the work for this anthology came pouring in from around the globe. From New Zealand to New York, from Denmark to New Jersey, the graphic stories and the short stories, the memoirs and the poems poured in. The world was watching, understanding and reacting. Now Oh Sandy An Anthology of Humor for a Serious Purpose is in your hands. All proceeds from the purchase of this anthology go to organizations that are involved with providing aid to those who have been affected by Sandy. Wonder: When and Why the World Appears Radiant

Paul R. Fleischman - 2013
We are embedded in an ancient, intricate world. Changing combinations of atoms pass through the long filter of history and natural law, to form planet Earth, whales, and our own thoughts. Based on the growth of evidence explaining how the world is put together, we have become the first generation to have a narrative that unites electron motion to our breath, and that connects hydrogen fusion in the sun to the energy that powers our own minds. We can describe how the proteins in our mitochondria pinch and place into perfect position metal ions that were forged in exploding stars. We cohere for a moment, suspended between information, order, and transformation of all things. This book is a scientific and literary exploration of those discoveries that reveal our deepest identity. Through our urge to understand and communicate, we have uncovered new meanings that infuse our days with wonder.

Miles Davis: The Collected Artwork

Miles Davis - 2013
Around 1980, he turned to sketching and painting to, as he explained, keep his mind occupied with something when [he was] not playing music.” This hobby quickly turned into a serious passion, and Davis approached it with the same obsessive creativity he applied to music. The result is an impressive archive of unique and evocative visual work showcasing the varied skill of this legendary artist.Throughout the 1980s, Davis studied regularly with New York painter Jo Gelbard, developing a distinct graphic style. Incorporating bright colors and geometric shapes, his art is reminiscent of work by Pablo Picasso as well as African tribal art, the historical influences he cited during occasional interviews on the subject. Author Scott Gutterman sat down with Miles Davis himself before he died in 1991 and the artist’s own commentary accompanies this remarkable showcase of his work.Sadly, very few of his pieces were exhibited during Miles Davis’s lifetime. Over the last two decades, the Estate of Miles Davis has worked with gallery owners and private parties to assemble a comprehensive collection of the musician’s artwork. Many celebrities are among the most adamant collectors, including Quincy Jones, who offers a foreword to the book. This long-overdue celebration is a treasure for art lovers as well as music aficionados who will appreciate the window into the life of this creative genius.
