Excerpt: "Harap Alb" or "Harap-Alb" (Romanian pronunciation: ), known in full as Povestea lui Harap Alb ("The Story of Harap Alb"), is a Romanian-language fairy tale. Based on traditional themes found in Romanian folklore, it was recorded and reworked in 1877 by writer Ion Creang, becoming one of his main contributions to fantasy and Romanian literature. The narrative centers on an eponymous prince traveling into a faraway land whose throne he has inherited, showing him being made into a slave by the treacherous Bald Man and eventually redeeming himself through acts of bravery. The plot introduces intricate symbolism, notably illustrated by the secondary characters. Among these are the helpful and sage old woman Holy Sunday, the tyrannical Red Emperor, and a band of five monstrous characters who provide the prince with serendipitous assistance. An influential work, "Harap Alb" received much attention from Creang's critical posterity, and became the inspiration for contributions in several fields. These include Ion Popescu-Gopo's film De-a fi Harap Alb, a Postmodernist novel by Stelian urlea and a comic book by Sandu Florea, alongside one of Gabriel Liiceanu's theses in the field of political philosophy. The notion of Harap Alb has therefore often been translated as "White Moor" or "White Arab." Both arap and harap are akin to a narrative theme present throughout the Balkans, from Turkey in the s...More: http: //booksllc.net/?id=23902144

The book contains many graphs and footnotes, two appendices, and a twenty-page bibliography. Climate scientists dispute Crichton's science as being error-filled and distorted. State of Fear is, like many of Crichton's works, a fictional work that uses science and speculation for the storyline. The debate over global warming serves as the backdrop for the book. Crichton supplies a personal afterword and two appendices that link the fictional part of the book with real examples of his thesis. The main villains in the plot are environmentalists. Crichton does place blame on "industry" in both the plot line and the appendices. Various assertions appear in the book, for example: Crichton argues for removing politics from science and uses global warming and real-life historical examples in the appendices to make this argument. Kinds of Reasons: An Essay in the Philosophy of Action

Maria Alvarez - 2010
The task requires a clear account of such things as reasons, desires, emotions and motives, and of how they combine to produce and explain human behaviour. In Kindsof Reasons, Maria Alvarez offers a fresh and incisive treatment of these issues, focusing in particular on reasons as they feature in contexts of agency. Her account builds on some important recent work in the area; but she takes her main inspiration from the tradition that receives its seminalcontemporary expression in the writings of G.E.M. Anscombe, a tradition that runs counter to the broadly Humean orthodoxy that has dominated the theory of action for the past forty years. Alvarez's conclusions are therefore likely to be controversial; and her bold and painstaking arguments will befound provocative by participants on every side of the debates with which she engages. Clear and directly written, Kinds of Reasons aims to stake out a distinctive position within one of the most hotly contested areas of contemporary philosophy.
