Retreat With Honor (Battles & Leaders of the Civil War) (Battles & Leaders of the Civil War, Volume 4)

Robert Underwood Johnson - 1956
THis series was originally conceived in 1883 by the editors of Century Company, who set out to provide an accurate, unbiased account of the war. It was authored by the commanders and their subordinates from both the Confederate and Union forces who actually fought, planned or were eyewitnesses to the events they describe therein. Volume 4 relates the events that led to the end of the war. It opens with a detailed description of the land and sea operations at the Battle of Charleston. Grant's Wilderness Campaign and Sherman's march to Atlanta are vividly portrayed. After mounting the final actions in Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee, this volume depicts the closing naval operations, Sherman's march through the Confederacy and climaxes with Lee's surrender at Appomattox.

Faith and Prejudice (Illustrated)

John Henry Newman - 1956
If the most striking of them is that intended for the opening of the Seminary at Olton in 1873, with its grim forecast of the future course of unbelief, the earlier ones have a special interest of their own. They were preached at St. Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, in the Spring of 1848, almost at once after Newman’s return from Rome as a priest of the Oratory. They are thus the first sermons he preached in England after he had left Oxford and the Anglican Communion. Aeterna Press

In and Out of Character

Basil Rathbone - 1956
"Basil Rathbone's book about himself...is better written than most books by or about actors and is more intellectually vigorous...Sherlock Holmes fans will be much interested in his remarks on the character with whom he has been so closely identified." -Library Journal "Quite naturally full of memories, full of names, full of glimpses of stars of stage and screen of yesterday and today." -New York Times Book Review

The Work of the Holy Spirit

Abraham Kuyper - 1956
Abraham Kuyper's exhaustive study of the work of the Holy Spirit -- now available for the first time in a paperback edition -- still stands undiminished as a comprehensive Protestant statement about a central but much-misunderstood part of the Christian faith. "I have made an effort," Dr. Kuyper writes in his preface, "to represent the work of the Holy Spirit in its organic relations, so that the reader may survey the entire domain. And in surveying, who is not surprised at the ever-widening dimensions of the work of the Holy Spirit in all the things that pertain to God and man?" The 123 brief sections that make up this work first appeared in the Heraut, a Dutch religious weekly of which Dr. Kuyper served as editor. So it is that this profound exposition is lucidly written in the language of the ordinary people for whose spiritual growth he was deeply concerned.
