The Other Hand

Andrew Kane - 2019
As a prominent rabbi in the Orthodox Jewish enclave of Lawrence, NY, he and his wife had raised three wonderful children, and his congregation was thriving. If anything, his 30 years of success had found him growing a little restless. That, of course, was before. Before his son came out as gay. Before he and the community learned his daughter was dating a man named Raj, who was rumored to be a Muslim. Before his good friend and strongest ally, real estate mogul Benjamin Marcus, was indicted for fraud. Before his position was on the line. His family now in crisis, his congregation in revolt, Jonathan is forced to square his suddenly chaotic reality with the traditions and beliefs he has practiced and preached his entire life. Facing daunting questions about the true meanings of once-simpler notions—love, family, and faith—he must embark on a path he could never have imagined to encounter a man he might never have known. From Andrew Kane, author of Joshua: A Brooklyn Tale, Rabbi, Rabbi, and The Night, the Day, this latest offering is an emotionally stirring novel that takes the reader on a journey of devotion, discord, despair and discovery.

He explores Mordecai's distraught childhood, and gives us the "portrait of a marriage" — the lifelong love affair with Florence, with Mordecai as beloved father of five. The portrait is alive and intimate — warts and all.

bestof.me - 2019
Nobody has ever told Eleanor Oliphant that life should not only be fine but better than fine.  Eleanor Oliphant is an ordinary woman who struggles with the appropriate social skills she needs to have on occasion. She has the tendency to say the exact words that she is thinking. Truth is, nothing is really missing in her carefully timetabled life that can be described as avoidance of social interactions. Her weekends are punctuated by frozen vodka, pizza, and phone chats with her Mummy. But everything will change for Eleanor when she meets Raymond in her office. He is the bumbling IT guy who is deeply unhygienic. When Eleanor and Raymond saw an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, together they saved Sammy. This became the start of the three’s friendship. They would rescue one another from the lives of isolation that they have each been living. And it is none other than the big heart of Raymond that would ultimately help quiet Eleanor to find the best way to repair her own profoundly damaged heart. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine will soon be a major motion picture that will be produced by actress Reese Witherspoon. Siege at Hawthorn Lake: Murder on the Mountain

Paul G. Buckner - 2015
He thought the small, peaceful valley miles away from the busy resort town of Hawthorn would be the perfect setting for his work. He invites two of his closest friends to stay a few weeks to do some hunting in the rugged and remote area. After their arrival, Troy gives them a tour around the property and plans are made to get an early start the next day. Morning arrives quickly and the eager hunters head out to their tree stands to settle in for a long hunt. Soon, an unexpected storm front moves in, and they are forced off the mountain. As they begin making their way down, they are suddenly and viciously attacked by a beast they can't believe is real. Separated from the others, badly injured and desperate to escape, Troy attempts to go for help. The winter storm makes the drive down the mountain road extremely treacherous and with his injuries making it more difficult, he loses control and wrecks his Jeep. He is found unconscious by a snow plow driver and wakes up days later in a hospital bed. Troy tells the unbelievable and horrifying story of the cryptid encounter on the mountain and desperately pleads for help for the friends he was forced to leave behind. Believing it to be a sensationalized story geared at publicity, the sheriff all but dismisses Troy's unbelievable claims, but when a search uncovers the body of one of the men and the other one missing, Troy becomes the prime suspect. How can he prove his innocence when the real killer isn't supposed to exist?

The Pope's Son

Rick Friend - 2018
Raoul was shocked to discover that Edgardo was once a Jew who had turned his back on the Jewish religion and his parents. Edgardo was abducted by the order of Pope Pius IX in 1858. When he was only six years of age, he was dragged from the arms of his parents in the back streets of Bologna to the rose gardens of the Vatican. The Pope thought it was justified to take the boy under his wing when the church found that he was secretly baptized by his father's maid who wanted to save his soul when she thought he was dying. There is world outcry. Christians and Jews from Sydney to San Francisco unite to petition the Pontiff to return the boy to his parents. However Pius IX refuses to return the boy to his family, risking his political power for the love of a son he calls his own. Edgardo was given many privileges as the Pope's "son" at a time when the Jews were in ghettos and starving. He never tried to return to his parents who were all but destroyed in their constant attempts to get him back into the Jewish faith. Raoul eventually realised that Father Mortara had not done much with his life in spite of the privileges he had as a child. Instead, he ended up as a sad character, beset with guilt and self-justification instead of reconciling himself to his beliefs. Raoul himself gradually became more aware that he must now choose between a life of passive stability or a life where he goes out into the world and affects changes. Almost 90% of the story of Edgardo Mortara's life and events are based on fact. This truly sad and perhaps unforgivable act of the Catholic Church should be seen against a backdrop of pre-unified Italy in the 1850s, a country overrun with Austrian soldiers, religious fanaticism and fierce anti-semitism at a time when the Pope was one of the most powerful princes in Europe.

Michael Jordan: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Players (Basketball Biography Books)

Clayton Geoffreys - 2015
This short unauthorized biography of Michael Jordan highlights his journey so far in the NBA from once being passed until the 3rd overall pick to becoming a six-time NBA champion. Few players have shaped so much of the game of basketball as Michael Jordan. It does not take a basketball fanatic to recognize and respect the name of Michael Jordan. Around the world, fans continue to aspire to become Jordan due to the incredible legacy he left behind on the Bulls organization and the game itself. Read on to learn about Michael Jordan’ journey into the league, his championship campaigns alongside Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Phil Jackson, as well as much more. Here is a preview of what is inside this book: Childhood and Early Life College Years at UNC Michael’s NBA Career Baseball in Birmingham Olympic Gold Standard Michael Jordan’s Legacy & Future An excerpt from the book:When it comes to sports in Chicago, there is a list of athletes whose names are synonymous with their respective sport – Walter Payton of the National Football League’s Bears, “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks in Major League Baseball, or the “Golden Jet” Bobby Hull for the Blackhawks. However, none of them ever won as many accolades like Michael Jordan has during his 15 years in the National Basketball Association with the Chicago Bulls. Even though he played two years of his career with the Washington Wizards, Jordan will always be remembered for wearing the red and black in Chicago and joining the list of aforementioned Chicago sports legends.Nearly 20 years after his final season with the Bulls, there’s now a bronze sculpture showing Jordan’s infamous “jumpman” pose in front of the United Center – a place that many consider “the house that Jordan built.” But many in Chicago will never forget his name for bringing six championships to the city within the 1990s. There are still fans that wear his iconic number 23 uniform and hold current stars like Derrick Rose to the same expectations as the Bulls continue to return to the glory from 20 years ago. There’s a reason Jordan built up one of the greatest careers that anyone has ever seen, not only the NBA, but throughout professional sports. His name also transcended into clothing, pop culture, movies, music, and other sports like baseball. Still, it all starts with everything he’s accomplished in basketball – with more than 32,000 points, six Most Valuable Player awards, and more several individual distinctions for both offense and defense.Jordan once said that basketball “has been everything. My place of refuge, place I’ve always gone where I needed comfort and peace. It’s been the site of intense pain and the most intense feelings of joy and satisfaction.
