The Dark Atoll

Marilyn Foxworthy - 2019
I could hear it. There, beyond the beach, behind the tree-line. Off to my left, out of sight. I was still on the beach, just beyond the waterline. I crawled here a few minutes ago. I heard the rustling almost immediately; as soon as I had become conscious again. I didn’t know how long I had been there, apparently washed up by a higher tide sometime earlier. My clothes were still wet, so I must not have been here more than a few hours. I didn’t wake up coughing, so it didn’t seem that I had drowned. The life-jacket seemed to have kept me above water. I was on my knees, scanning the tree-line for movement, and listening…and trying to get my bearings. I had been awake for just a few minutes. The sun was up, but barely. Of course, we almost never saw the sun because of the ash clouds, but they were getting better every year. It had been 18 years since the cataclysm. If the cataclysm had taught us anything, it was to be careful and think things through. I wasn’t in immediate danger as far as I could tell. My only injury seemed to be a really painful, but minor head-wound from where I had been hit. We had left the compound on Tahiti early yesterday. Or was it the day before? I guess it didn’t matter. I guess I didn’t know for sure what day it was. I didn’t have a watch; we didn’t have much use for them. When you don’t have appointments, and no train to catch, precise times aren’t that important. I had intended to travel with just the cargo, but Aunt Irene hated the islands and wanted to go back to what she thought of as her home. For some reason, she expected to find the resort and the town just like she had left it. She was delusional. I might not have said that last week, but after what happened, I would have a lot more to say if there had been anyone to listen to me. What I couldn’t figure out was how she and Clark thought that they could survive a two year journey at sea in relative isolation, eating mostly fish. Irene was used to demanding that others do her work for her. How did she imagine that she would handle a trip like this with just me, Clark, and the four sisters? She didn’t even like any of us. My plan was to stay on a different end of the boat as much as possible. But that was all pretty much ancient history now. Last night, I was standing at the bow of the boat, watching the last of the sunlight disappear. It was going to be dark. The moon didn’t show much these days. Irene came up and stood beside me and said, “So, out there is Rangiroa?” I said yeah, but there was something strange about the question. She knew as well as I exactly where we should be and where our course was taking us. Yeah, the island Rangiroa and it’s neighbors was just in front of us. We’d be passing them overnight. There was something weird in her voice. She sighed and said, “Yeah,” and then I felt something hit me in the back of the head and I passed out. I woke up on the beach here, listening for something out there, beyond the tree-line.

Outlander of Rome: A tale of ancient Rome

Ken Farmer - 2014
Mare Internum. Mesogeios. The Mediterraneus. That sea has been known by many names since the creation of the world. To the people living around its shores, it was the entire world. Myron had no use for the myriad of gods that the people of his village worshiped - and cursed. And it was obvious to himself that those immortals, in turn, had no interest in a young man whose future would be bound by the reed pools and swamps of the Nilos delta. His disinterest was such that he seldom even bothered to bash the ears of whichever deity was supposedly responsibility for the daily misfortunes of an orphan. Then came the evening when the marauders struck... Had he been given even a glimpse of his future from that moment on, he would have dismissed it as the ravings of a drunken myth weaver. In fact, the story might have been similar to the tales that were told on occasion, around the evening fires, by an itinerant bard who entertained the village in return for a bone to gnaw and a jar of bitter beer to quaff. But, sanctioned by the gods or no, his future would take him to the far reaches of the known world. And his rise from the lowest drudge to the command of men was certainly not derived from bending his knee to some vaporous deity, but by innate skill and the ability to take the measure of a man. Indeed, his story was the kind of tale that a bard loved and would cause his listeners sit in total silence to hear. After all, why would a man in reality, who had fought his way to power and riches, would give them up for a mere woman and an uncertain future? Of course, only the gods knew of his unique gift...

Then she betrayed them. Now she has been caught, and her punishment will be more shameful than anything she could have ever imagined. She will be bound, naked and helpless, as she is thoroughly and painfully strapped. Then she will be used in the most humiliating ways possible, taken over and over again first by the man who trained her and then by one guardsman after another. An Alpha's Heart: The Architect and Bodyguard

Sara Allen - 2019
He gazed at me for a few seconds. ”Because after the fire is burned away, what’s left?” The Architect: He was like no one I’d ever seen. Ink snaking across his neck, down his arms and across his hands like the map of his life. If those experiences gave him joys or pains, he’d never tell. He was a mystery I hoped he’d want to share, but I knew I was fooling myself. Robbing a bank would have been easier. His body reminded me of a marble statue; tall, lean and muscled. When he walked into a room, men and women stopped to stare. If his body enticed them, the impassive stare and cold eyes scared them more. He watched every action, and wasn’t impressed. What kind of man was picked him up off the streets, kept like a dangerous pet, but remained loyal to the one man who had his respect? Whoever said the only fire that burns was hot, had never met Asher’s frigid stare. He was going to ruin me, and like a moth to a flame, I went willingly. The Bodyguard: My job had its perks. Travel, women and enough freedom to make my life interesting. I’d been to nearly every continent in the world, and slept with some of the best-paid entertainment money could buy. But those things were for show, meaning nothing in the grander scheme of things. When my boss decided to build a new house, why he recruited the sexiest architect around, I have no idea. I’m not a relationship kind of guy; I’ve been too messed up to share myself with anyone worth the time. It’s complicated. A person like me, whose life belonged to someone else, had nothing to share with anyone. I saw her, but made sure she thought otherwise. A woman like that is too straight for me. She’d want too much and be worth the effort too. I was like a doctor who prescribed pain and heartache to the unwary, and even though I knew I should stay away, there’s something about her I want to explore. Maybe I’ll just get her number. After all, I don’t have to call her, right?
