Maeve Binchy: Three Great Novels (Scarlet Feather / Tara Road / Evening Class)
Maeve Binchy - 2002
In Evening Class, she applies her signature warmth, wit and understanding to something new--a wickedly funny book for anyone who's checked into the hospital, headed for an operation or convalesced at home. Maeve Binchy can always be counted on to spin an involving tale about ordinary people that brings out the extraordinary in everyone. Here, she zooms in on the working-class of Dublin. Schoolteacher Aidan Dunne organises an evening class in Italian with the help of Nora O'Donoghue, an Irishwoman returning home after 26 years in Sicily. When the somewhat squashed-by-life denizens of the surrounding neighbourhood take the unexpected step of enrolling in the class, they find their lives transformed. Binchy tells her story from the viewpoints of eight different characters and rewards both them and her readers with happy endings after the requisite rocky road. Reading a novel by Maeve Binchy is like catching up with old friends--you know everything will turn out fine in the end, but you're still interested in how things get that way.
My Soul to Keep
Judith Hawkes - 1996
There, in the gathering shadows of a winter twilight, something happened to a nine-year-old girl named Nan Lucas. Something that left her daredevil playmate Tucker Wills, dead and her memory crippled, unable to recall the horror. Twenty years later Nan has returned to Tennessee, but not to remember the past. Now a trendy Manhattan fashion photographer, she comes seeking refuge from the shock of her collapsed marriage. In the old farmhouse inherited from her grandmother, she begins to reorder her priorities - among them, a more solid relationship with her young son, Stephen. Common sense says the imaginary playmate who consumes most of Stephen's time is only a normal invention for a little boy who has no companion his own age. Yet Nan cannot ignore her mounting fears that the mysterious figure Stephen calls "Woody" is both very real and very dangerous. Joining forces with an old mountain woman said to possess the gift of second sight, she struggles to save Stephen from the shadowy companion who seems to be compelling him toward destruction. Yet as hope and time run out, Nan comes to understand she must somehow pierce the veil of her forgotten past and reach into the dark recesses of her memory to rediscover what happened in that long-ago twilight at the quarry when Tucker Wills died.

A Crown of Thorns: The Governors of the RBI
T.C.A. Srinivasa Raghavan - 2016
The participants in the controversy which raged during June–July this year forgot that as many four previous governors of the RBI have had their terms cut short. The recent debate has to be seen in this context. This volume focuses on all the governors of the RBI since 1935 and describes how almost all of them had problems with the government. It is inherent in the tasks they are charged with. It also shows how, after 1957, when Jawaharlal Nehru accepted the resignation of Benegal Rama Rau after the latter’s quarrel with the finance minister, T. T. Krishnamachari, the RBI virtually became a department of the finance ministry. Its claims to independence have been revived only after 2002, when financial sector reform changed the structure of a large part of the financial economy. The book ends with advice to future governors about what they should remember: they are the servants of the sovereign, not independent Wu-li masters. They have to manage the government, not fight it. Theirs, as a former governor sensibly pointed out, is a circumscribed independence, the perimeters of which are defined by the government.
Shadow Child
Libby Purves - 2009
Her first return to novel writing has resulted in an unrestrained picture of grief that feels at times, uncomfortably intimate ... this is not a book for the fragile (Melissa Katsoulis, Times Sat. 25 April 2009).
My Story
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum - 2019
These stories tell of the vision behind Dubai’s meteoric growth from a small and bustling trading port to an international metropolis at the heart of global business. They record the evolution of the United Arab Emirates from a shared ideal to a nation where more than 195 nationalities live and work in peace, harmony and prosperity. And they reveal insights from a man whose drive, determination and will to succeed have become legendary. Within these stories lies the heart of Sheikh Mohammed the statesman, the equestrian, the poet and the leader. They are written with the intent to inspire and inform new generations of readers, and to celebrate the achievements of this young and vibrant nation and the people who shaped it. This celebration of a life in service is unavoidably incomplete. As Sheikh Mohammed himself indicates, there is still so much left to do. As a record of the first fifty years alone, however, it forms part of a remarkable legacy. Other titles written by Sheikh Mohammed and published by Explorer include Zayed, Reflections on Happiness & Positivity, Flashes of Verse and Two Great Leaders.

Michael Dobbs - 2006
So when she overhears gossip of her husband’s affair, it is a shattering blow. For some women such things seem part of the Westminster game, but Ginny is no ordinary woman. She decides that there is only one way to stop being a perpetual victim of the system, and that is to become its master. Ginny will not be satisfied until she is the wife of the Prime Minister. And so begins a voyage of personal discovery for Ginny that will change her from devoted mother and housewife to ultimate manipulator. Driven by the intuition and determination of a wronged woman, she takes ruthless advantage of the ineptitude of men. Ministers, editors, churchmen and even the Monarch fall victim to her wiles. Yet in the pitiless world of politics, one man’s success can only be achieved by the ruination of many others, and Ginny will discover there is a high price to pay for pushing her husband to the very top…As with his brilliant House of Cards series, so with First Lady, Michael Dobbs ruthlessly dissects the greed, corruption and lust for advancement in twenty-first century Westminster. It is a novel as witty as it is moving, as compelling an entertainment as it is an intimate insight into the darker corners of the human soul.
