Scouting on Two Continents

Frederick Russell Burnham - 1926
Born on a Dakota Sioux reservation he was taught the ways of the Native Americans from as soon as he could walk. At the tender age of fourteen, having had little formal education, he was supporting himself and learning from some of the last cowboys and frontiersmen of the Old West. These lessons would pay dividend in his later life, first as a tracker for the United States Army in the Apache Wars and later as a scout for the British Army in the Matebele Wars in Southern Africa. Frederick Burnham Russell was a remarkable figure who revolutionized the art of scouting in both the British and United States armies. Indeed his influence would lead his friend, Robert Baden-Powell, to begin the international Scouting Movement. In Scouting on Two Continents Burnham records the details of his brilliant life in fascinating detail and provides insight into the life of an unique adventurer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. “Burnham in real life is more interesting than any of my heroes of romance.” Rider Haggard “Burnham is a most delightful companion ... amusing, interesting, and most instructive. Having seen service against the Red Indians he brings quite a new experience to bear on the Scouting work here. And while he talks away there’s not a thing escapes his quick roving eye, whether it is on the horizon or at his feet.” Robert Baden-Powell Frederick Burnham Russell has been described as the “Father of Scouting.” He fought in the Pleasant Valley War, Apache Wars, the First and Second Matabele Wars as well as the Second Boer War. His book Scouting on Two Continents was first published in 1926. He passed away in 1947.

Den of Wolves: Complete Trilogy

Harper Maguire - 2019
The residents of this sleepy little town are none the wiser, but everyone sure knows about Oregon Investigations. Cousins Jack and Liam, and their longtime friend, Brodie aren’t just the private investigators of the firm, they’re also shifters belonging to the very same dwindling den of wolves. PART ONE Charlotte Gold has followed in her father’s legendary, country-singing footsteps, though her success hasn’t spanned beyond Cottage Grove. She’s just fine with that and singing with her band at Home on the Range feels like a little slice of heaven and a whole lot of fun whenever she gets on stage. But when her drummer keels over, dead, one night while playing, Charlotte’s quiet corner of paradise turns dark. No one suspects foul play except for Charlotte and she will stop at nothing to expose the killer who took her friend’s life, even if the residents of Cottage Grove think she’s crazy. One man doesn’t think she’s lost her mind, however, and Jack has all the skills and resources to crack this overlooked case wide open. PART TWO Eve Picoult hasn’t set foot in her hometown of Cottage Grove since she graduated high school ten years ago, but her dear friend twists her arm into agreeing to return for their ten-year reunion. It’s been forever, but how could she say no to her favorite Skype friend who has always been there for her, through thick and thin? For Eve, well, one reason comes to mind… or person. Brodie Shea. When Eve arrives at Cottage Grove, however, she discovers her friend mysteriously vanished. How could that be? Eve fears the worst, knowing her friend wouldn’t miss her high school reunion for the world. And it will be Brodie and his private investigation firm who will help Eve find out why her old friend has suddenly disappeared. PART THREE One dark, foggy night, as Wendy Cunningham kicks and fights her way up from the bottom of Silver Lake, she fears that life as she knows it is about to come to a violent end. But a man pulls her out, saving her life at the last minute. She doesn’t recognize him, but Liam knows exactly who she is. Come to think about it, not only does Wendy not recognize Liam, but she doesn’t recognize Cottage Grove, the town where she apparently grew up in, or remember anything about her life for that matter. Amnesia. Wendy’s memory will come back, but no one knows when or how or why, and until she remembers who knocked her out and tossed her into Silver Lake for dead, she will have no choice but to rely on the one man she trusts didn’t do it—Liam Doren. But Liam has secrets of his own. He’s a wolf shifter, after all, and the closer these two get, the harder it becomes for him to hide it from her.

With detailed analysis the authors reconstruct the battles of the division and explain how they were able to carve a path through Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Alsace, the Rhineland and Central Europe. The Vikings: Raiders, Explorers And Seafaring Warriors

Lance Hightower - 2016
Their achievements, rich culture and craftsmanship contributed greatly to our world today, and their explorations helped make up the boundaries of nations. The Vikings: Raiders, Explorers, and Seafaring Warriors by author Lance Hightower will give you a glimpse of the battles that raged for more than 300 years, sparked by the cultural and religious differences that were the trigger for warring with the Franks, England and Ireland, and for trade and exploration into the Muslim empire, the Byzantine Empire, as far as Russia, Spain and North America. They came from Sweden, Norway and Denmark, not as one army, but as separate tribes who assaulted their way through Christendom as retaliation for the destruction of their holy icon. They came from the sea in a way that ingeniously allowed them to go where no conventional ship dared, and they were able to navigate waters without benefit of the sun to guide them. They used boats that made ship-building history – light, fast, and equally efficient in shallow rivers and mighty oceans. They terrorized, traded, bartered, took slaves, colonized, fought and died all in the name of Odin, god of the battle-slain. Perhaps in the end, they fought more for territory and riches than principle, but the history of the Vikings will always remain as one of the most enthralling of all Ages, where honor was crucial, death on the battlefield was preferred to idleness, and the stormy pantheon of their gods still held the greatest influence in their lives. The brilliant sagas come to life with snippets of modern translations, told like tales of old should be told, with dread, heroics and excitement. Lance Hightower combines his own expertise with the latest archeological findings and information given to us from ancient text to present a first-rate portrayal of the Vikings in an easy-to-read format that is a refreshing change from the usual dry delivery of history.

With British Snipers to the Reich

C. Shore - 1988
Captain Shore’s enthusiasm for firearms and especially for rifles led him to take every possible opportunity to try out different weapons, ammunition and methods of shooting. His interest was combined with sound common sense, and he would never countenance a rumour about a particular weapon or incident unless he was able to confirm it for himself. As a result everything in this book is based on his personal experience. In World War II Captain Shore took part in the British landings at D-Day, and fought in Normandy and northern Europe. He came across many different weapons in varying condition, some of the worst being those used by the Dutch and Belgian resistance fighters. He was keen to learn from experienced snipers and then to train others, and he became an officer sniping instructor at the British Army of the Rhine Training Centre. He shares a wealth of first-hand knowledge of different rifles, pistols, machine guns, ammunition, telescopes, binoculars and all the equipment a sniper should carry. This is not only an account of sniping in World War II but also a guide to all aspects of sniping based on personal knowledge and experience in training and battle. Illustrated heavily with photos, pictures and other illustrations of snipers, their weapons and their tactics.
