The Rise of Malbeck

Jason L. McWhirter - 2012
An army of darkness marches from the north, crushing all who oppose it under its muddy black boot. The drums of war echo throughout Kraawn as the struggle between light and dark teeters in the balance, fueled on the one hand by the greed of the Forsworn, and on the other by the ultimate desire for all that is good to survive.Tarsis, the last city in the north, is laid waste, decimated by Malbeck’s army. Kromm, the King of Tarsis, battles for his life as the dark hunters of Malbeck relentlessly pursue him through the Tundren Mountains. His mighty army has been destroyed and its remnants are now scattered throughout the lands. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by his elite guard, along with Addalis, his court wizard, and Allindrian, the half-elf Blade Singer. But will that be enough to thwart that which hunts him?The road to Finarth is now open and few are left to stop the Dark One. The hope of the land rests in the combined power of its last remaining heroes. Jonas Kanrene, cavalier to Shyann, has been given his next mission. He must find King Kromm and bring him to Finarth. The bow of Taleen, cavalier to Bandris, and the sword of Fil Tanrey, warrior of Finarth, accompanies Jonas on this perilous task. Their quest is fraught with death, sacrifice, and courage. But will their courage see them through their mission? Can Jonas and his companions prevail against the Forsworn and protect the king? These are questions that can only be answered by the strength of their blades, and more importantly, the courage in their hearts.

Red Rowan: Book 1: Forester's son

Helen Gosney - 2014
In most ways, he’s the same as any other forester: tall, strong and well built, red-haired like his northern kin, and like them considered small by other foresters but not by anyone else. He has all the proverbial politeness of his kin and all of their stubbornness as well. He differs from them in only two things: he is a Whisperer of the sort not seen for a very long time, and he has come to be regarded as a hero and a legend in his own lifetime … much to his own amazement, disbelief and horror. This is the story of how he did it. Book One is the story of a young Rowan who leaves the forests as few of his kind ever do, to become a Guardsman in the neighbouring province of Wirran. The Wirran Guard are justly proud of their distinguished reputation and find themselves shocked to find a young Siannen is as good as any of them and better than most when he takes them on at their own game. Book Two finds Rowan’s life has changed a lot, and not for the better. He has faced unimaginable loss, trauma and betrayal and decides to find and confront the Gods themselves, simply to tell them what he thinks about the way they’re running things. He might mention some improvements that they could make while he’s at it. His meeting with those he finds in Plausant Bron will change him and the world of Yaarl forever. Book Three sees Rowan more at peace with himself at last, though at times he still struggles with the losses and traumas of his past. At the urging of an old friend he will finally return to his old garrison to face and accept the adulation and honours that he turned his back on. While he’s there, he will show a new generation of swordsmen that the Champion is not to be trifled with, no matter how old and decrepit he may appear to be.

The Spires of Dasny: Dragon Riders School

Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait - 2020
I scrambled up the Spires of Dasny, even though I knew it once was a haven for dragons and the old Dragon Riders School. The ground thundered. I trembled in the small niche tucked into the mountain. Had the knights returned? I caught my breath as an enormous green eye peered in. A dragon!I awoke in a deep, dark cavern. Staring at me through one opened eye lay a huge black dragon. I had been taught the stories of the dragons, of the days long ago when they ruled the sky and searched for their riders, but this wasn’t at all what I had been taught. Why was I there? Suddenly, pressure built up in my head. My eyes sprung wide in fear and... I heard him. What happens when three dragon riders come together as told in the prophecy? The Blind, the Healer and the Magician…There are secrets to be uncovered, but only if Seyra is brave enough. Discover the intriguing lives of the brash young Seyra and Dreyth, the one who rescues her--or is it she who rescues him?*I loved this story. It had shades of Anne McCaffery to it - and I loved her books.**This was amazing. I loved this line because it says so much. “One dragon eye slowly opened. It is possible. Sleep now. Sleep heals all things. We will talk later.” This has the beginnings of something grand. So good.**I thought of Anne McCaffrey while reading, so you must be doing something right. I liked the way you gave us all the information we needed without it feeling like an information dump. The section on the dragon riders felt natural.*
