Emily Summers - 2015
They captivate us with their forbidden mystery and promises of excitement. Yet once inside us, they become toxic; compelling us to infect others, who in turn want nothing more than to be bitten. It's a vicious cycle that ensures nothing remains secret forever. The only way to protect yourself from their destructive energies is to simply turn the other way when offered one. To resist the lure of the forbidden fruit. But sometimes, something just happens to you - or you just happen to witness something - that forces one upon you; like an uninvited guest that arrives without warning, and leaves only under great duress. Unfortunately, I have been burdened by such a secret for over twenty years. You see, my childhood was stolen from me in broad daylight, right under my nose, by a cunning thief who dazzled me with his charms, only to run away with my innocence forever. It was the perfect crime, and at the time I was the perfect victim. But thankfully, I was able to pick up the pieces of my life and gradually go on to live quite normally. In fact, I even forgot all about my childhood trauma. Or so I thought. Because it was during a recent chance encounter with my old teenage diary that I realized my demons had never truly left me. They had only been lurking in the shadows all along as I busied myself with other things. I suppose I learned the hard way that a secret kept in darkness only grows in potency.  But there is one way to diffuse a secret. To take away all of its power. And that is to make it public. For no vampire can survive in the cold light of day. So it is at the behest of my wonderfully supportive husband that I have decided to lay bare the ghosts of my childhood in this book, in the hope that in doing so, I'll finally be able to lay them to rest forever. It's been a long, hard journey for me to get to this point. And I thank you, dear reader, for playing your part in my recovery. Emily WARNING: This book is based upon a true story of child abuse, and as such contains passages that some readers may find disturbing.

The Little Pink Pill

K.L. Smith - 2014
....The world can be a scary place to navigate when you’re brain damaged. Even scarier when you aren't entirely sure what you might have done during a blackout while your alternate personality is running around in your body. My wife calls him ‘The other one’. If you can’t trust your own eyes or the people around you, sometimes it pays to take a leap of faith. I have, I stopped taking my little pink pill. I wonder what will happen?... Flynn was on a bus in London that was attacked by a suicide bomber. He lost his fingers in the explosion and gained left frontal lobe damage to his brain, leading to violent mood swings, blackouts, suicidal thoughts, and psychopathic tendencies. Flynn’s doctor determines that the left frontal lobe syndrome has left him with symptoms similar to schizophrenia, which develop a secondary personality during times of stress. Flynn and his wife refer to this secondary personality as ‘the other one’. However, after he is given a little pink pill by his doctor, an anti-psychotic pill normally reserved for schizophrenics, his moods level out to the point that he can function almost normally again, apart from the fact that the pink pill leaves him feeling emotionally numb. He is relatively content with his new life, after all, thanks to the pink pill, he can’t feel enough to care anyway. Until he decides to stop taking the pink pill in an effort to feel things again. He wonders if he can fool everyone around him into thinking that he is still taking the little pink pill, whilst in reality starting to live a double life. After a chance meeting with another patient during his hospital appointment, he befriends Sid, who also suffers with schizophrenia. The two embark on a sometimes humorous journey of twists and turns in an effort just to stay in what they believe to be a state of equilibrium. The only problem is, neither of them knows if what they perceive is real or not. Especially when experiments with LSD get thrown into the mix. Flynn also has a worrying eye on the news, as more and more people seem to be going missing, and he can’t be certain if he, Sid or any of their ‘other’ selves may have played a hand in it. Please note this novel contains strong language.

The Unspoken Abuse

Edward Charles - 2013
I couldn’t put my finger on it, but hey, who was I to question her? A heart-breaking true story of misplaced trust and horrific abuse. Edward Charles thought he knew the woman he married. He thought he understood her, and that he had saved her from a maniacal man that made her life a misery. He thought he was her hero, but she wasn’t the one that needed saving. Edward was a career-driven man when he met Angie. She was going through personal trauma and leant on Edward for support, which he was all too happy to give. They fell in love and began a happy life together. But their fairytale didn’t continue that way as, during a life- changing night, Angie put out a cigarette on Edwards wrist. This event marked the beginning of his painful life of secret abuse. Edward writes with a colloquial and readable style that reaches the audience on a personal level, making his experiences approachable whilst keeping the reality and gravity of the abuse central to his story. Readers of A Child Called It series and The Murder of Jeffery Dryden will discover another horrendous secret world, and the heart-rending story of the extraordinary person who suffered it. Edward’s hellish journey, not only through what his wife forced upon him, but through the difficulty he faced in obtaining help from the authorities, shows true determination and raises a real issue that often remains unnoticed and unacknowledged. Edward has taken part in radio interviews on the issue of male domestic violence, and hopes his story will instil courage and hope in others who may still be suffering in silence. Children are being used as weapons against fathers and mothers who love them very much. Message from the author: When an abuser leaves you with scars on your body, they can heal. Sadly the mental abuse leaves scars that are allot harder to recover from. Recovery can take years and in some cases, the victim never recovers. Authorities need to wake up, men can be victims of domestic abuse also. They can also face an uphill battle when it comes to contact with their children. Parental alienation should be outlawed. Once more the law has let the victim down. I would like to point out, if this book was fictional why would I write it? Yes it might not be the works of Shakespeare but truth is truth and no one person can hide that! Thank you everyone who have offered all their kind and positive words of support via reviews and twitter. For everyone else thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts. Edward Charles

Clouds In The Wind

Ian MacKenzie - 2014
This powerful novel is set predominantly in the mid to late ‘70s when the Rhodesian bush war was at its height before the Lancaster House agreement and the end of white rule. Get on to the story of Andy Mason, first as a schoolboy discovering the beauty of Africa on a trip to Northern Rhodesia in the ‘60s, then as a sergeant in the Rhodesian SAS in 1974 and 1979. This is powerful and authentic story-telling. The author was there and it shows in the detail, the sights, the sounds, the smells and the fear. Sent out on a routine recce, the four-man team is ambushed, reinforcements are sent in and a full-on fire fight evolves. Step back in time and we discover what led the young South African schoolboy to blood and death in the African bush. The author shows he is equally at home in the concrete jungle of Johannesburg amid high-flying fraud and corruption. A farm murder in Rhodesia and a plea for help from a former girlfriend sends Andy to the battlefield and the winds of war. Torn by anger and grief he enrols in the SAS. One of 12 recruits out of 500 to complete the gruelling course, and finds himself among the close-knit camaraderie of the forces. But the writing is on the wall. The superbly trained Rhodesian army never lost a battle, but they are fighting a war they cannot win. The contrast is here – the stark reality of war, mutilation and death and the lavish lifestyle of the Salisbury elite; elegant dancing and dining with a rifle always at the ready; luxurious living on the prosperous farms that have been in families for generations and armed convoys anywhere outside the city. Andy falls for laughing, beautiful Alyson, spoilt and protected darling of her wealthy parents, but even there the war takes its toll. This is yet another gripping piece of story-telling and the author succeeds remarkably well in getting into the skin of this anguished young girl. Naturally politics of the period is entrenched, but the author lets his characters give their viewpoints – angry, paternalistic, stubborn or entitled. This is a book that will enthrall and enlighten. It's a passionately told story that will simply take your breath away.

Till Death Do Us Part

J.J. Slate - 2015
Spousal murder is never acceptable, but newlywed murder seems to be on a completely different level. It is unconscionable to think someone could stand in front of his family and friends, pledging to honor and cherish another person for the rest of his life, and then kill his spouse in cold blood just months, weeks, or even days later. It happens more than you'd think--and, contrary to popular belief, it's not always the husband who acts as the aggressor. In her third true crime book, bestselling author JJ Slate examines more than twenty true stories of newlywed murders, delving into the past of the victims and aggressors, searching for answers to the question everyone is asking: How does this sort of thing happen? These shocking cases of betrayal and murder might just make you think differently about those five sacred words, "till death do us part."
