Beware Sleeping Dragons
T.J. Reeder - 2013
(The Posse Comitatus Act is the United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152) that was passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction and was updated in 1981. Its intent (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) was to limit the powers of Federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce the State laws.) The training and armament of our civilian police has led to many abuses of power where the police don't believe they are above the Law, but that they ARE the Law". This has culminated in the deaths of many Americans who have reacted to middle of the night break-ins by law enforcement, reached for a weapon to protect his or her family, and been executed. The 'no-knock' rule must go and civility towards the public must return. Barring that, I see a time when this story line will become the common occurrence. People will say, "Enough!" and will say it with force, if needed.
Mercy's End
Athena Storm - 2019
But my soul craves him. He’s a beast. A killer. With the blood of thousands on his hands. He has no mercy. No repentance for what he did. But it isn’t his cruelty that astounds me. It’s the sin he awakens inside of me. I have no control around him. His will is too strong. His hold over me too deep. I know I should run. I know I should hide. Anyone else would. But instead I’ll fight next to him. I’ll defend him to my dying breath. I may not make it out alive. But at least I’ll die by his side. And even if we do make it out alive. I’ll gladly forsake the life I knew. For another damning dose of his touch. Mercy’s End explores a darker and grittier side of the Athenaverse. It can be read as a standalone, but it still shares the same universe that you’ve found in other books. This book features a dark romance of an alpha male alien warrior, and a human woman. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and HEA guaranteed.

I can feel it in the intensity of his eyes and the electricity of his touch that he still wants to claim me. What will happen when he finds out my daughter is his and I hid it from him and his clan? Will he step up and be the protector my daughter and I so desperately need?

Planisphere: New Poems
John Ashbery - 2009
Planisphere is a new collection by one of America’s most innovative and influential poets—an exceptional artist whose work stands alongside the finest of Whitman, Dickinson, Stevens, and Hart Crane. For more than half a century Ashbery has been producing timeless works such as Chinese Whispers, Hotel Lautréamont, A Wave, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, and Where Shall I Wander. Planisphere is proof that the master only improves with age.
What the Soul Doesn't Want
Lorna Crozier - 2017
Her arresting, edgy poems about aging and grief are surprising and invigorating: a defiant balm. At the same time, she revels in the quirkiness and whimsy of the natural world: the vision of a fly, the naming of an eggplant, and a woman who — not unhappily — finds that cockroaches are drawn to her.“God draws a life. And then begins to rub it out / with the eraser on his pencil.” Lorna Crozier draws a world in What the Soul Doesn’t Want, and then beckons us in. Crozier’s signature wit and striking imagery are on display as she stretches her wings and reminds us that we haven’t yet seen all that she can do.
The Bethany Tales: Four Intertwined Stories of Restoration and Hope
Bryan E. Canter - 2020
Peer into the lives of four people from the village of Bethany—a harlot, a mistress, a beggar, and a leper—as their worlds interweave and collide. Throughout similar circumstances, they each have unique and personal encounters with Jesus. Along the way, they learn what it means to experience authentic relationships, genuine community, and true faith. These emotionally charged stories reveal people who struggle with the same kinds of life issues that we all encounter today—feelings of loneliness, guilt, inadequacy, betrayal, and despair. Yet their interactions with Jesus bring profound changes to the way that they view their world, each other, and themselves. These four tales use the creative gift of imagination to explore what each of these men and women might have been thinking and feeling, while remaining true to the biblical accounts and consistent with life in first century Israel. So come on a journey that will challenge you, inspire you, and like these characters from Bethany, leave you forever changed.

Spring Comes To Chicago
Campbell McGrath - 1996
Now, in Spring Comes to Chicago, McGrath pushes deeper into the jungle of American culture, exposing and celebrating our native hungers and dreams. In the centerpiece of the book, "The Bob Hope Poem," McGrath confronts the paradoxes that energize and confound us--examining his own avid affection for People magazine and contemplating such diverse subjects as Wittgenstein, meat packers, money, and, of course, Bob Hope himself. Whether viewing this life with existential gravity or consumerist glee, McGarth creates poetry that is at once public and profoundly personal.
The Clowns
Tim McBain - 2016
The biggest threat the city has ever faced – clowns. Evil clowns, armed and angry and hungry for human flesh. Yep. Creepy clowns beckon people into the woods and stab them a bunch of times. Like so many times. It's the age old battle of man vs. clown, and with the local police oblivious to the growing clown problem, Phillip Burkholder may be mankind's only hope. He is 15. He is flunking geometry. And possibly social studies. He has little to no clown slaying experience. Crap. We could be looking at a clown-pocalypse scenario. Not good. You know, we could go on and on about it, but it's homicidal clowns. You either want to read something like that or you don't. Warning: May contain graphic violence and a lot of clowns.
