The Grange Catherine is curious to see the house and the inhabitants that she has heard so much of. Intact Lady Catherine de Bourgh is a resilient woman but some trials are hard to bear. Tactless Miss Lydia Bennet makes her debut and becomes all the rage. She anticipated balls and ballgowns and dancing and flirtation – she did not anticipate foiling an attempted abduction. The Countess and the Highwayman Lydia rarely behaves as she is expected to, and sees little reason to change her ways after her marriage. Not Romantic Miss Charlotte Lucas, whilst appreciating the romance of Pemberley, has too much sense to think of love.

    Bingley finds out that he is to host the annual harvest dance. It seems like a daunting task, but fortunately he has the assistance of Mrs. Bennet and her daughters, the eldest of whom enchants him. The planning of the august event and the course of true love both run smoothly, but pandemonium breaks loose once the full moon rises. Many more people turn up than were first expected, among them Mr. Darcy, who finds more than he bargained for under the harvest moon.

    Fitzwilliam Darcy, heir to Pemberley, is equally determined to reject any matchmaking endeavors targeting him. But when the two attract, there is little that will get in their way. Come along for this variation on the pairing of Pride and Prejudice's two central characters.     After the disastrous proposal in Kent, Elizabeth travels to London and is reunited with her sister Jane before returning to Longbourn. Still distressed by the revelation of Mr. Darcy’s true feelings, she is overwhelmed with guilt for completely misjudging him and for trusting Wickham so readily. A walk with her sister and aunt in Hyde Park provides an opportunity for fate to intervene and to cross her path with Darcy’s again in a most unexpected way. The presence of Mr. Bingley and the proof that Darcy has quickly admitted his error and tried to remedy it, makes Elizabeth’s self-reproach increase and her feelings for him soften. However, Mr. Darcy is a proud man, whose good opinion once lost is lost forever. Mr. Wickham is also part of this story, stirring the waters with his usual viciousness; his role is somehow the same, yet different and original compared to the canon and to most P&P variations.     Consigning herself to a marriage of convenience, she sets out to make it work. But she had not expected Mr. Collins to be so contentious. Other new people in her life are causing trouble too. As her efforts to create harmony fail, she manages to find happiness in her duties and her friendships. Especially the friendship of Mr. Darcy, who provides her with interesting conversation, a sympathetic ear, and assistance when she is in need. That need becomes dire when her husband turns violent. But the harder her life becomes, the more her friends step up. The loyalty of old and new ones helps her to navigate a difficult journey. And her dream of love is waiting at the end.

    Up until the Reverend William Collins arrival, things are not far from canon. Collins is the sycophant we all love to hate and sets his sights on Jane. Bennet tells him in no uncertain terms he will not consent to such a man marrying ANY of his daughters.Charlotte Lucas overhears Collins ranting to himself about how he will evict the Bennets from Longbourn the day Bennet passes. He then tried to woo Charlotte soon after and she too rejects him. He is derisive when she rejects him out of hand, he tells her that no man would ever offer for one on the shelf, without fortune, and as homely as her.Collins then proposes to Matilda Dudley, Lizzy’s friend and Longbourn’s widowered parson’s daughter. Matilda accepts him much to Elizabeth and Charlotte’s surprise.Collins’s words to her spur Charlotte to take charge, the story tells the tale of what she does and how it affects the lives of not a few people. The book examines how Charlotte actions change the trajectories of some of our favourite (to love and hate) characters.
