He would remain part of the French Foreign Legion for the next five years. After swearing to the cause of liberté, égalité, fraternité Manington was immediately transported away from France to begin his training in Algeria. Tonquin in French Indochina was their destination, to help quell the rebels against colonial rule that had emerged after the Sino-French War.
