The Demons of Paris

Eric Flint - 2018
Demons, imps, and spirits, evil and benign, spill into the universe from the netherworld. In Paris, a series of grisly murders that couldn't possibly be performed by a human, no matter how depraved, leads the Grand Chatelet and his men to try and raise a demon of their own to learn how to combat the creature that is terrorizing the city. Unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—the demon who is summoned brings with him a van from the Paris of the twenty-first century. The van contains a modern day drama teacher, her son, and eight precocious high school students—along with all of their electronic devices. Soon, their laptops, tablets and cell-phones become possessed by imps and spirits of the netherworld, some of whom are brilliant and all of whom are insatiably curious. Soon it's a race to see which pack of outsiders can create the most turmoil in the late Middle Ages—monstrous demons or precocious teenagers who soon have their own allies and followers among the ranks of demonkind. And King Charles V had already been in trouble! Piled onto his own poor health, a suspicious and contentious church, France's always-quarrelsome nobility—worst of all, his unscrupulous and ambitious brother, Philip the Bold—the king now has both demons and people from the future to contend with. He does have one asset—and not a small one. He can place his trusted Constable of France, Bertrand du Guesclin, in charge of the rambunctious teenagers from the future and their ever-growing legion of demons. And Bertrand has a great asset of his own—his wife Tiphaine de Raguenel, perhaps the best astrologer in all of France and, for sure and certain, not a woman to take seriously the prattling nonsense of youngsters skeptical of her lore and knowledge.

Serena Meadows - 2019

He must experience some of life’s harsher realities, say the king and queen, if he’s to become the leader the Seelie people need. Across the fields his royal subject, Darby, knows all about harsh realities... After losing her parents at thirteen the young farmer has had little time for royals or gossip. A good day means a warm hearth and full bowl. Anything else is a luxury. But things are finally improving and for the first time ever, winter’s approach isn’t quite so bleak. Until she discovers a large, rumpled heap sleeping in her barn… The thing—whatever it is—stinks worse than her animals (and sounds just as ornery) but questionable hygiene is the least of Darby’s concerns. The seasons are turning, and darkness is gathering at the edges of the Seelie Kingdom. More than ever, the people need a hero they can count on, but it seems that man is nowhere to be seen. Buffer Zone

Connie Suttle - 2018
A device would be clamped to the backs of our necks and we'd never be able to shift back to human again. It was how they justified their enslavement of us; that we were only animals instead of sentient humans. The Krelk had killed more than two-thirds of the human population, too, but they made the excuse that they'd thought them animal as well, until their High Council, wherever that was, decided otherwise. When I heard the first yelp, even underground, I couldn't breathe. Was that a shifter? Few shifters could take on a Krelk and their weapons and either survive or avoid being stunned. That's how we were captured—frozen and only barely able to breathe while we were caged, tagged and hauled away from the buffer zone. Another yelp—followed quickly by a third. This was no shifter—the Krelk were the ones screaming. Terrified but still curious, I dipped into the watery entrance and slowly made my way out of my cave to peek at the river bank above my head. A dead Krelk dropped into the water nearby, making me jump and squeak in terror. "An otter?" Someone leaned down to look at me. Not a Krelk—I knew their scent. This—I'd never scented someone like this before. I scrabbled backward, afraid of this newcomer, too, even if he did appear humanoid. "Don't be afraid—I killed all of them." I backed all the way into the water and scrambled to swim to my cave before he could grab me. Once there, I refused to come out. "I understand," he said, loud enough that I could still hear him. "Be safe. I'll patrol farther down, tonight." I listened, my heart beating so rapidly I feared it would burst while his footsteps, light as they were, faded as he walked southward. He'd killed six Krelk, and I'd never heard one of their weapons fire. Who could do that? Earth wasn't alone it its suffering. We were just another planet in a large group of suffering worlds, and help was either non-existent or difficult to come by. There'd be no Marines landing here to save us; that hope had died years ago. What we had was a handful of people with unusual talents, helping a few of us stay alive against impossible odds. --Clare Coquina
