Getting at the Truth: Responding to Difficult Questions about LDS Beliefs

Robert L. Millet - 2004
In Getting at the Truth, Robert L. Millet demonstrates that we can reach out and build bridges of understanding with those of other beliefs without compromising what we know to be true. Our responsibility to be a leavening influence in society means we cannot completely avoid the troublesome issues of our world. This book helps us put many of those issues in context, clarifying our doctrines and showing how to respond to opposition most appropriately and peacefully.

Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence

Sarah Young - 2003
So with pen in hand, she embarked on a journey that forever changed her—and many others around the world. In these powerful pages are the words and Scriptures Jesus lovingly laid on her heart. Words of reassurance, comfort, and hope.  Words that have made her increasingly aware of His presence and allowed her to enjoy His peace. Jesus is calling out to you in the same way. Maybe you share the author’s need for a great sense of “God with you”. Or perhaps Jesus seems distant without you knowing why. Or maybe you have wandered farther from Him that you ever imagined you would. Here is a year’s worth of daily readings from Young’s journals to bring you closer to Christ and move your time with Him from monologue to a dialogue. Each day is written as if Jesus Himself were speaking to you. Because He is. Do you hear Him calling?

The Zen Commandments: Ten Suggestions for a Life of Inner Freedom

Dean Sluyter - 2001
Do the right thing, of course-- but better yet, find your inner light and doing the right thing becomes as natural as breathing. THE ZEN COMMANDMENTS offers ten powerful nudges toward that light.Drawing on sources from Zen stories and the Bible to jazz and rock 'n' roll, from American movies to Tibetan meditative techniques, Dean Sluyter steers clear of dogma and emphasizes what works-- a sort of spiritual street smarts. He shows that the state of boundless freedom and happiness isn't something distant or exotic, but is right here, while you're stuck in traffic or taking out the trash. And revisiting the Ten Commandments, he shows how on a deeper level they offer some surprising enlightenment wisdom of their own.“The book is extremely well written and joyously entertaining.”—Publishers Weekly “With sparkling clarity and wit, Sluyter's ten suggestions lay out the practical essentials of the path. My suggestion is: listen to this guy.”—Lama Surya Das, author of Awakening the Buddha Within “Dean Sluyter clearly presents simple but profound ways to live one's life consciously and skillfully. He teaches that the source of universal truth not only rests in the heart of every one of us, but is the essence of what ultimately brings us true happiness and freedom. This is a wonderful book with rich wisdom and deep insight.”—Rabbi David Cooper, author of God Is a Verb “No matter what your religion (or lack of it), this book shows how to live the kind of life people ache for. It turns out to be pretty simple.”—Jane Cavolina, co-author of Growing Up Catholic

This was exactly what I've been looking for."-Graham Panci"Thank you for showing me how I can use my mind much more effectively. It all makes sense now that I've read it here. Eye opening!"-Clay Winters"Brilliantly simple, I've heard of some of these things before, but never had it explained so completely and so clearly. Many thanks John."-Julie YotoFREE EXCERPT:Mnemonic Tip 2- Convert Digits into WordsRemembering phrases is easier than remembering a series of digits. Similarly whole words are easier to remember than just single letters. So try to convert single digits and letters into words and then out them into memorable sentences. The reason these are more memorable than digits or letters alone is that there is no meaning, no reference point to a single number or a letter, and so they don’t make much of an impression on our minds. Actors can remember whole scripts, some then remember these for the rest of their lives. They can do this because the words, the phrases, have such a clear meaning to them; they are characters and stories. If they tried to remember the same amount of information in the form of just numbers or letters they would have no chance. This is an important aspect to all of these mnemonic devices, moving information of little meaning, to something of greater meaning. For example we can turn the digits 0 1 8 2 4 into the phrase “Only One Crate of beer tonight for me”. Here I have converted the numbers into words in the following way:Only= 0 or ZeroOne= 1Crate=8 (here I am using only a phonetically similar word, but still this is more than enough to make it memorable and link us back to the number 8.)Tonight= TwoFor= FourThis was quite straight forward for just five digits. But for longer series of digits, such as a whole phone number, the same process applies. Take your time to practice this on your own phone number now, or maybe create a random series of digits, and then code it into a sentence. It will seem difficult at first, but with a small amount of practice you can quickly become adept at this method. The exact same process can be applied to letters. Perhaps the letters H P become the words “Harry Potter”. And so, if you wanted to remember the code 01824HP you could encode it into the phrase:‘“Only one crate of beer tonight for me” said Harry Potter.’Read it a few times aloud to yourself then turn into an image in your mind, visualize it clearly; picture Harry Potter sat drinking beer at a bar, then saying this as he burps loudly. Creating a visual image will cause the phrase to route more deeply into your mind as you are creating a clear memory, and building a still deeper and stronger collection of new pathways in your mind.I promise you this image and phrase will be easier to remember than the 5 digits and 2 letters would by themselves.

The Love That Made Mother Teresa: How Her Secret Visions and Dark Nights Can Help You Conquer the Slums of Your Heart

David Scott - 2014
But she was a woman with a will whose strength has been matched by few souls in history. Mother Teresa broke death’s stranglehold on the poor of Calcutta, and she showed us how to conquer the sin and darkness in what she called the “slums of the hearts of modern man.” Part biography and part spiritual reading, these pages bring to light little-known stories from Mother Teresa’s life that will help you to grow in your love of God. You will learn her approach to reading Scripture, what enabled her to persevere through agonizing nights, and the remarkable — some would say mystical — events that led her to start the Missionaries of Charity. In considering Mother Teresa, her private visions, and her secret sufferings, David Scott has discovered scores of early episodes and chance encounters that point to later, larger meanings. These remarkable patterns, he suggests, show that Mother Teresa’s life was choreographed from above, as if a divine script had been written for her from before her birth. In these pages, you will meet for the first time the Mother Teresa who challenged the ancient Goddess of Death and became the first saint of our global village. You will read as she describes, in long-secret letters, the dark night of her soul. The woman you will meet is one that God himself sent to you as a clear sign that despite pain and suffering in our lives and in our world, God’s good love will prevail . . . beginning in the slums of our hearts. We are all called to holiness, and the saints are sent to us as “real life” examples of God’s love. With Mother Teresa as your guide, you’ll learn how to follow God’s call and find holiness in a world marked by the shadow of death and growing indifference to God. Indeed, you’ll learn how to be an everyday missionary of Christ’s love in the ordinary activities of your daily life.
