When Elizabeth is faced with major changes in her life, she can either accept them or allow them to disrupt her life completely; however, she cannot help but ask what will happen to her. She regrets she is not a lady of independent means, so she must contemplate seeking service, but what, she wonders, is she suited for. Through all of this upheaval, what help might Mr. Darcy provide for the lady he is trying not to fall in love with, and how might her new situation affect his feelings for Miss Elizabeth Bennet? This is a full length novel. Warning: There is one scene of violence but the scene is not graphically detailed. There are, however, enough details to show the reader what happens.

    Darcy's caustic remarks about her at the assembly. Would she still have seen him as arrogant, selfish and conceited? Would he have been able to remain aloof and prideful if Elizabeth was not initially prejudiced against him? The road to true love turns in unexpected ways.     Absorbed in her book, she had lost track of time and is obliged to run home through the darkening woods before she is too late. Mr Darcy of Pemberley had been feeling unwell for several days. Only his promise to his friend Bingley forces him to ride out from London to Hertfordshire where he is to assist him with the running of his estate. But as he rides through the darkening woods towards Netherfield, his illness finally overtakes him and he falls unconscious from his horse. Elizabeth is shocked to find him and with the help of her father, takes the young man home to Longbourn where she nurses him through his illness. He is too weak to travel and is obliged to remain under the Bennets care, much to the anger of Mr Bingley’s ambitious sister, Caroline Bingley, who has her sights set on becoming Mrs Darcy. As Elizabeth and Darcy grow closer, rumours spread through the small rural town of Meryton about a marriage between the two. Elizabeth attempts to quash the rumours, but trouble starts when they reach the wrong ears and soon, the jealousy of others threaten to tear the two apart.

    This is a Pride and Prejudice variation by the author of Mr. Darcy's Persistent Pursuit and Love's Fool: The Taming of Lydia Bennet.

FROM THE AUTHOR Suddenly, I felt compelled to write a story which would take me (and JAFF) far from my comfort zone, and try something new. It was watching ‘Crimson Peak’, a biting-nail horror story, that the inspiration finally came to me. How would it be to write a story about ghosts, combining romance and mystery, but with no ghosts? "The Curse" is set in 1815, a year when Romanticism — a movement marked by the exaltation of feelings of loss and guilt related both to nature and men — was the fashion and drama, an essential component of the works of this time. "Songs of Experience", by William Blake (1794), "The Corsair", by Lord Byron (1814), and "Frankenstein", by Mary Shelley (1818), are all good examples of how committed the authors were in exploring human's woes; sometimes the sombre tone and dramatic plots are almost too depressing to endure. I can understand the bad reviews related to this point. But I cannot regret my choice. As another reviewer said, “we are all entitled to our own opinions”; the good reviews show it. I grant — my choice in writing a story using Romantic features was bold, but, for me, the result was very pleasing, especially considering the happy ending — what is not the norm for the Romantics. I should not be saying this, but it doesn't matter how much Literature I study, I always love a good happy ending. Another important choice was the deep POV of ODC. In P&P, we live the story through the eyes of Elizabeth and do not learn about Darcy’s struggles until very close to the end. I intended to show the huge abyss between his aloof appearance and his troubled mind — but here, he another reason for it.

    When Darcy arrives at Netherfield with his friend Bingley, he is in a bad mood for an entirely different reason: his mistress of seven years, with whom he has fallen hopelessly in love, has abandoned him to marry a duke. If Darcy thought he was having a wretched Tuesday after visiting Diana, things suddenly become worse when he arrives at his uncle's townhouse only to discover the earl, who generally leads a very dissipated life, has suddenly become concerned for the future. Darcy's uncle reminds him that he needs to marry and provide an heir for the Pemberley Estate. His cousin, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam, who had no plans to marry, finds himself in a similar boat, but without a paddle. His elder brother, the Viscount Stanley, has produced only daughters, so it may be up to Richard to sire the next earl. He now has the unenviable task of convincing a lady to marry a second son with no expectations. Temporarily escaping the debacle, the cousins accompany Darcy's friend Bingley to his newly leased estate in Hertfordshire so that Darcy can help his friend pursue his father's dream that his son become a member of the landed gentry. Fitzwilliam, who is more at home with business decisions, must navigate his way through the most important social decision of his life, with nearly disastrous consequences. A Pride and Prejudice variation that includes a prequel and forks at the Netherfield Ball. Suitable for mature readers. What a wonderful story, truly one of my favorites. Elizabeth as mistress of Pemberley really won me over. Finn's ending however made me the happiest. I about wept. Last of all, I'm in love with Colonel F.
