Año Nuevo, Vida Nueva: Learn Spanish by Reading

Juan Fernández - 2016
It will help you learn, revise and consolidate the vocabulary and grammar of the levels A2 and B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference. There are different methods or techniques to learn the grammar and vocabulary of a Foreign Language, but reading is one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to do it. By reading, students can learn or consolidate the vocabulary, expressions, verb tenses and grammar structures as part of a story, in context, without memorizing lists of isolated words or studying endless grammar rules. However, it is not always easy to create a good story with the limited vocabulary and not-too-complex grammar learners of a Foreign Language require. That is the main reason Easy Reader books are sometimes disappointing. The stories told are just too bland, fail to capture the attention of the learners, and do not keep their motivation until the end of the book because authors are constricted to using quite a narrow range of grammar points and vocabulary topics. I hope Año Nuevo, Vida Nueva does not disappoint you. I have written this story based on my experience living in London and teaching Spanish for 20 years. The events and the characters I describe here are only the result of my imagination, but their fears, sadness, anger, frustrations, hopes, joys, and dreams are real; they reflect some people I have met and some situations I have encountered during my teaching career in London.

Seven Little Mice Go to School

Haruo Yamashita - 1982
But Mother must face the fact that her children do not want to go to school. They’ll be too tired, the wind will be too cold, they’ll meet a snake and they won’t know anyone; these are among their many excuses. Cleverly, Mother plans for the morning by unwinding two balls of yarn, making parallel lines that stretch from home all the way to school. She is unruffled when the children ignore her announcement that it is time for school—she just calmly steps out, stands between the strings and announces that the school train is departing. This piques the kids’ interest, and they are out of the house in no time, following along. But will some of their fears come true?" - Kirkus Reviews  "Assuaging the anxieties of one first-time student is tough enough, let alone seven. In this story, first published in Japan in 1981, an industrious mouse mother hatches a plan for getting her septuplets to school, rolling out two lines of yarn along the path through the woods. In the morning, she announces, "All aboard!" and the seven curious mice line up, with the yarn becoming the train tracks. Along the way, the "Mouse Train" picks up more "passengers," and the mice even scare off a snake. This story about finding creative solutions unfolds with understated elegance..." -Publishers Weekly
